Web site: Phone: (410) From the Pastor By Rev. Karen Bunnell, Senior Pastor Dear Friends, The other day I had the joy of having lunch with a number of members of our church who had joined in the past three years. It was a wonderful, uplifting gathering. What made it so wonderful was that over and over again, I heard how people found our church to be warm and welcoming from the very first time they came in the door. For some of them, our church was the first stop on their church shopping venture, and once they came in, they never left again! As we approach Holy Week, and especially Easter Sunday, I invite all of you to think of someone in your life, a family member, a friend or a neighbor, who doesn t have a church home, and ask them if they d like to come and worship with you. It s the best time of all to invite them - a time when they can come and hear the great Good News of the resurrection, a time when they can know again that nothing can defeat God s love in Christ Jesus - not bad news all the time, not rising gas prices, not losing one s job or losing one s health - nothing can defeat God s love. Who in your life needs to know that? Will you invite him/her to come with you to church this Easter? It could change their life forever. I pray that all of us will have the courage to reach out and invite someone into new life in Christ this Easter! I so look forward to celebrating this glorious day with you! 2 MISSIONS OUTREACH He who despises his neighbor sins, but blessed is he who is kind to the needy. Pr o v e r b s 14:21 Easter Community Outreach Project Submitted by Linda White & The Evangelism/Membership Committee A second Community Outreach Project is being planned for Saturday, April 7th at 10:30 a.m. We are looking for volunteers to walk door to door inviting our neighbors to join us for the Sunrise Service on Easter morning or any of the other Easter Services they might like to attend. In September of last year, nine members of our church reached out to the community inviting them to attend the special service that was held commemorating 9/11. Our church had a tremendous turnout for this service, and we re hoping for another successful turnout for Easter Sunday! All of our volunteers had good experiences talking to people who appreciated our invitation. Over 250 doors were knocked on in September, and we would like to exceed that number on April 7, but we can t do it without your help! Please join us in Weldin Hall at 10:30 a.m. for a brief welcome and training session. Afterwards, we will head out to several communities such as Patriots Glen, Creswell Heights, and Normira. Everyone should meet back at the church by 1 p.m. Your involvement is crucial to the success of this project, so please give it some thoughtful consideration. If you have any questions, please call the church office or speak to Rev. Bunnell. Hope to see you all there! Fantastic Result For One Great Hour Of Sharing Offering!! Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to our annual One Great Hour of Sharing offering which benefits our United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). The results were astoundingly wonderful - $9800!!! That is phenomenal! And just to let you know - the 11:00 service beat out of the 8:30 service for the second year in a row. But thanks to all who gave so generously. This money will touch lives of people suffering all around our world! WORD SEARCH SOLUTION (from back page) You re Invited to a Very Special Good Friday Experience This year s Good Friday worship will be an entirely different experience from what we ve ever done. Seven groups in the church have answered the call to each deal with a different word of Jesus from the cross in a creative way. Each group will have a room in the Wesley Wing, and in that room they will portray, in some way, a word of Jesus from the cross ( Father, forgive them..., My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?, etc.) Worshipers will make their way through each of the rooms, pondering that word from Jesus and what it means for their life. Please make time in your schedule to come and take part. It promises to be a very moving way to remember Jesus sacrifice for us on the cross on that very first Good Friday. It takes place on Friday, April 6th from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Help the Help Center On the 1 st Sunday of each month, the Missions Committee will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Help Center. Please bring donations to the welcome center area on April 1 st! 2 Spaghetti Dinner Thank you to all who came and supported our Spaghetti Dinner which grossed $3550. Thank you to the over 50 volunteers who generously donated their time to put on a successful dinner, and for all those who baked for the bake sale and especially those who attended the dinner! We appreciate everyone s support. GUESS WHO? This little princess is a woman who makes students better. (answer on page 7)

EDUCATION AND EVENTS Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not turn from it. Pr o v e r b s 22:6 ServFest By Bob Gilmore, Missions Chairperson ServFest is coming! Area churches will join hands and efforts on Saturday, April 28th, to provide assistance for local service projects. The Missions Committee is seeking volunteers for a possible EUMC project: planting flowers in front of the Town of Elkton Municipal Building. If you are interested in helping with this project (organizing, donating flowers and materials, or working on the day of the project), please contact Bob bgil53@ yahoo.com. Nino s Dining In/Out!! Mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 17th. The Missions Committee will be having a dining out night at Nino s in Elkton (next to Staples). You can come for lunch or dinner and dining in or take-out options are available. The money they make goes towards the Kentucky mission trip this summer. Lay Speaking Course Ever wanted to be trained in public speaking in the church? Well, here s your chance, and the training is happening right here in our church! The Wilmington District of the UMC is offering its annual Lay Speaking Academy this spring, and it s open to anyone interested in speaking and leading in the church. (They are also offering advanced courses for those who have already completed the basic course.) If you think this might be something you d like to do, please contact one of the pastors by ing eumc@comcast.net or calling the church office. Getting ready to clean out that garage or basement? Then the Missions Committee wants to tell you it s time to put aside those yard sale items for the EUMC yard sale on October 6th. More details to follow in the coming months! Special Offering To Be Received In May A special offering will be received on Mother s Day, May 13th at both services. The money will go toward the renovation of the Hospitality area, which will take place in June. As you probably know, our hospitality area is way too small for our needs. People have trouble moving around during coffee hour, and it s a real fire hazard. So the Trustees have plans to remove the outside library wall, reconfigure the library, and add some cabinets for a coffee area and storage for the hospitality teams. The floor (which has some soft spots) will be taken up, and hardwood flooring will replace the carpeting. The total project will be somewhere in the area of $6000. On Mother s Day, we will take a special second offering to help cover the cost as much as possible. Please pray about this worthy project and help in any way that you can. Solution to Cryptogram (from back page) Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. John 11:25-26 General Conference Our denomination s General Conference is a gathering of lay and clergy delegates from all over the world, which takes place once every four years. The job of the General Conference is to set the rules of the church, known as The Book of Discipline, and also make an official stance of issues of concern, which go into The Book of Resolutions. The General Conference is the only body that can speak for the entire denomination. They meet from April 24th through May 4th in Tampa, Florida. Please pray for all of the delegates to this year s General Conference, for safe travels, and for wisdom and discernment, and most of all, a commitment to seek and do God s will for the UMC. 3

YOUTH GROUP YOUNG ADULTS Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. Ps a l m 25:5 Sunday School News Shannon Laramore, Director of Children and Educational Ministries We are kicking off April with our annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 1st. Please join us in Weldin Hall at 12:00 p.m. for a luncheon, and then we will head outside for the egg hunt. A main dish of hot dogs and drinks will be provided; please bring a side dish for everyone to enjoy. Please remember there will be no Sunday School on Easter Sunday. On April 22nd, all students are invited to participate in the wonderful Earth Day fair that will be taking place in Weldin Hall. Thanks to the Stewardship Committee, there will be fun activities for all ages to enjoy. Are you looking for a great experience this summer? Don t forget to check out Camp Pecometh and the many camps they offer throughout the summer. Elkton United Methodist Church offers $100 to every camper from the church who would like to attend. See for details or contact Shannon Laramore at slaramore1@gmail.com. Adult Sunday School News We are excited to announce a new adult Bible Study starting on Friday evenings focusing around the movie Courageous. Participants will view the movie on week one and discuss the challenges families face and how the Bible teaches us to deal with those challenges in the weeks remaining. Come discover how to have a closer relationship with your family the way God intended. The study begins on April 20. Dinner will be provided at 6:00 p.m. in Weldin Hall, and then we will view the movie after dinner. The following four Fridays will begin with dinner at 6:00 p.m. and the study beginning at 6:30 p.m. Dinner and child care will be provided. Please look for a registration in the bulletin or contact Shannon Laramore at slaramore1@ gmail.com. 4 News From The Youth Group Sandy Wherry, Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries The youth have a RETREAT planned for the weekend of April 27th through the 29th. We will be doing a service project with ServFest on Saturday morning. We will begin the retreat at 6 p.m. with dinner. The cost for the weekend is $20.00, a 2 liter drink (juice, milk, soda, etc.) and a snack (salty or sweet) to share with the group. I want to give you a small visual of the things I see when the volunteers are working with the youth, especially as we prepared for the Prom Boutique but let me tell you, this happens with almost any event that we plan. As I was working with the youth, I watched in the background as some very important people worked even harder. I watched Tammy Cox, Jeanette Perkins, and Veronica Marshall work diligently preparing dresses, marking notes, measuring, and placing dresses in just the right places. I watched Kristi Hastings and Carlos Reyes take notes as the youth spoke. Finally, I listened as Brooke Pinder read the scripture that we were working on that evening. I can say the same about a few others who have also worked diligently and we wish to thank them all: John Fetterolf and Donald Cunningham for helping to prepare our room for the Prom Boutique. Amanda, Cindy and Andrew Fetterolf help in any way that we need, as we need it. I can t thank these wonderful people enough for the tireless time and effort they put into volunteering with our youth. My prayer is that the Lord will bless them richly with good health, wisdom, and discernment in all their endeavors. The youth wish to thank Mary Juergens for giving her talk and time. Mary came to talk about sharing your faith with friends and witnessing to them. She spoke about being invited to events you weren t really interested in attending (parties, etc.) just by saying a polite No. Then she spoke about praying for the right opportunity to speak with friends about our choice in saying No, thus witnessing to them about our faith. Mary, a student at West Chester College, started an excellent discussion, and we thank her for sharing straight from her heart. We invite Mary to join us again. I want to thank our church for all the support you give us, the words of encouragement and the love you show us in all you do. We can feel the presence of the Holy Spirit working in and through you. Thanks to all those who helped with the Sunrise Service. This is always a very special time in the life of the church and your participation is wonderful to witness.

CHURCH NEWS Getting wisdom is the most important thing you can do. And whatever else you do, get good judgment. Pr o v e r b s 4:7 Finance Bill Ferringer, Chairman Finance We continue to be financially prosperous in 2012 as February had a surplus of $3,325 bringing our year to date surplus to $7,456. This surplus is going to be very helpful as we move into the next couple of months where there will be a need for funds to pay some annual expenditures such as the building insurance premiums. Please continue to keep your pledges up to date. Having funds available for the normal operating expenses is conducive to making Elkton United Methodist Church an exciting place to be! Financial Report February 2012 February YTD Income $ 36,740 $74,893 Expenses $33,415 $67,437 Balance $3,325 $7,456 Trustees Report By Faye Camors, Committee Chair It s been a busy winter with converting boilers from oil to gas 3 down, 1 to go and putting a new roof on 109 Locust Lane, and now we are repairing leak damage and other issues of age with the property. Thank you for all your support! No Communion on April 1st - Because the Palm/Passion Sunday service will center around the cantata, Here is Love, being presented by the Chancel Choir, we will not be having communion that day. We will, however, have it four days later - on Maundy Thursday night. Happy Administrative Professionals Day! Wednesday, April 25th is the day on which we honor Administrative Professionals, and we have the best Administrative Professional of all in our church - Kay Mortimer! She makes the church office hum and keeps things running smoothly, even when chaos reigns all around her! If you get a second, send her a card or give her a pat on the back for a job well done! 5

MUSIC AND WORSHIP May the LORD bless you from Zion all the days of your life... Ps a l m 128:5 Music Ministries By Sharon Williams, Coordinator of Music Ministries As I write this article for the newsletter, our choirs are busy rehearsing for Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter. Easter Sunday will be a chance for you to hear some beautiful music with bells, brass, organ, men s choir and chancel choir. Come to worship on Easter and help us celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. If there are any singers and/or instrumentalists, children through adults, in our congregation that I am unaware of, please let me know. I would love to have you participate in our Sunday morning worship services. Contact information is below. If you think you may be interested in joining any of our choirs, check the church calendar or Sunday bulletin for dates and times of rehearsals or contact me at (410) or by at stwilliams10@ comcast.net. We enjoy having new people be a part of our music program. Wilmington Handbell Ensemble Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 5th! The Wilmington Handbell Ensemble is coming back to perform for us. The concert will be in Weldin Hall at 7:00 p.m. Invite your family, friends and neighbors for a delightful evening of music and refreshments. 6 Compassion Sunday By Terri Lokey Imagine your child spending her days trudging barefoot through a landfill, looking for something to salvage or sell for food, or picture your house as a one room shack, pieced together from scraps of plywood and corrugated steel, with raw sewage flowing in streams outside your door. This is a reality in some parts of the world. In this day and age, it s literally a sin that 30,000 children die each day from preventable causes. In a world where more than a billion children live on less than $2 a day, connecting one child with one sponsor is the most strategic way to end child poverty. Compassion International exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social and physical poverty and enables them to become responsible, fulfilled Christian adults. On Sunday, April 29th a short presentation will be shared during both services, where you can learn more about Compassion s global ministry and become a part of it. More than 40 EUMC families now sponsor a child through Compassion International. If you are a sponsor, please bring a photo of your child on that day to share with others. A table will be set up where more families can sign up to sponsor a child in need. Compassion International Letter Writing Chat and Chew By Terri Lokey Mark your calendars for Sunday, May 6th for 12:15pm. All Compassion sponsors are invited to an informal discussion about writing letters to your sponsored child. Terri Lokey will give updates on what is new with Compassion and share letter writing tips. A light lunch will be served as we chat, chew and write letters! There will be a sign-up on the table across from Karen s office. Take a Tour of the Mary Randall Center By Terri Lokey You may have heard about the Mary Randall Center during the months of the Rotating Homeless Shelter. It s the building on North Street where clients signed in for the overnight shelter. But the MRC is so much more than that! If you are interested in learning more about the services provided at the Mary Randall Center firsthand, tours are available on the first Thursday of each month from 10:30-11:30am. Please contact Lisa Slinkard at or lisa@ meeting ground.org to sign up for a tour.

FELLOWSHIP AND STEWARDSHIP We are therefore Christ s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. II Corinthians 5:20 4th Annual Men s Gathering By Mike Noll On the first weekend of March, thirty-two men made the trip to the Dunes Manor Hotel in Ocean City, MD, to gather for music, relaxation, fellowship, good food, and worship. This year our theme was Man of God. Our four speakers shared personal stories and made connections to men in the Bible who were tested as men of Faith (Eric Laramore), Forgiveness (Brett Pinder), Hope (Dave Wherry) and Love (Joe Tanner). We learned about being a Man of Courage by watching the movie Courageous. A special thank you goes out to these men for inspiring us. Following each talk, we met in our covenant groups to discuss how each story connected with us. Everyone enjoyed the food, the wonderful accommodations, and no one seemed interested in returning to our previous location. The planning committee is already working on dates for our 5th gathering while we are compiling the evaluations from this year. Man Food, Man Talk By Mike Noll These informal sessions take place on the first Thursday of the month. Arrive at 6:30pm for food, 7:00pm for discussion. There is always room for more men to eat and talk. Remember - you do not have to attend every month, and, if you can t make it until 7:00 pm, that is OK too. We will save you some food! Upcoming sessions will take place on May 3rd and June 7th. Let us know that you are attending by sending an to mikenoll@aol.com. We want to make sure we have enough food for you! Classic Christians (50+) News The Classic Christians are on the road for a couple of months now. April finds them off to a Phillies game on Wednesday, April 11th, and then a busload of CC s will be heading off to Boston from May 14-17th. Stay tuned for the summer events, which will include our annual picnic at the Andersons! Guess Who Answer It s Laurie Alphin! Easter Lilies There is still time to purchase a lily to place in the sanctuary on Easter Sunday, April 8th. Each lily is $9.25. If you are interested, please contact the church office at Journey to the Holy Land By Rev. Brett Pinder Ever imagined the place where Elijah butted heads with the priests of Baal? Ever wondered about the mount from which Jesus spoke the Beatitudes? Next spring join me in a 12 day trip to the Holy Land. Educational Opportunities Tours gives us the chance to travel together for this trip to the Holy Land. The trip will cost around $3,000 including international airfare, hotels, most meals, travel through the Holy Land, guided sightseeing, lecture series, and more. I would like to start gathering more information for this trip, and need to know if you are interested! If you are interested put down this newsletter and let me know at Brett.86p@gmail.com or Altar Flowers We are still looking for people to place flowers on the altar, and it s very easy to do. First, call Ruth Deibert at and let her know which Sunday is best, give her the wording for the bulletin, and then call the florist of your choice. Flowers usually run between $25-$35. If you have any additional questions, please call the church office at
