THE 5M8 5M8 BEACON BEACON Lighting Our World with Lionism District Governor Ted Peterson MARCH 2016 Words to Enlighten from our District Governor First, I would like to thank the host clubs for the 2016 Mid Winter Conven on; Belgrade, Cold Spring, Cold Spring Home Pride, Eden Valley, Lake Henry, Paynesville, Richmond. A special thanks to Lions Jeff Thompson, Theresa Geers, Pat Donlin and Bill Lemke for all their hard work as commi ee officers. Second, Congratula ons to District Governor Elect Judy Hoofnagle and 1st Vice District Governor Elect Jack Breitkreutz for winning your elec ons; I m sure you both are looking forward to your year as governor. This year we had 362 par cipants at the mid winter, 157 delegates from 52 clubs. The parade of green took in $159, Winners of the First Timer Contest, 1st place Lion Kay Mueller Staples 93, 2nd place Lion Paul Weidenstrom Pine City, 3rd place Lion Becky Thompson Paynesville. Past Interna onal Director Gerry Robbins was selected to be inducted into the MD5M Hall of Fame. The 2019 mid winter conven on will be held at the Best Western Kelly Inn in St. Cloud, MN. Recogni ons given out, LCIF Chairperson Medal to PCC Jim Diehl, PDG Frank Leidenfrost, IPDG Duane Finger; LCIF Top Award to PDG Frank Leidenfrost, IPDG Duane Finger and LCIF Top Club to Pine City Lions; Interna onal President Cer ficate of Apprecia ons (4th highest award) to Lions Deb Bialke, Jeff Thompson and Theresa Geers; Interna onal President Cer ficate of Apprecia on President to IPDG Duane Finger; President Medal (2nd highest award) to PCC Frank Loken. Congratula ons to all recipients. Third, the district is s ll looking for a 2nd Vice District Governor Elect. At this point the qualifica ons are modified because we are past the conven on. The governor would have to convene a special mee ng of the Past Interna onal Directors, Past District Governors and Cabinet members of 5M 8 to vote on a candidate for 2nd Vice District Governor. The qualifica ons are: (a) Be an Ac ve Member in good standing of a chartered Lions club in good standing in his/her single or sub district. (b) Have served or will have served at the me he/she takes office as first or second vice district governor: (i) As officer of a Lions club for a full term or major por on thereof; and (ii) As a member of the district cabinet for a full term or major por on thereof. (iii) With none of the above being accomplished concurrently. I know with me as I started out as 2nd VDG, I thought it looked like a long me ahead of me, but the me has passed quickly. I have truly enjoyed the me spent along the journey; the great people that are members of our associa on are phenomenal. Do some soul searching and take that next step to an adventure of a life me! (2018 Interna onal Conven on will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand Resort) Fourth, I have been pre occupied with the subject of Ethics, so I have included in this newsle er several documents about our standards as Lions dealing with ethics and conduct. It s important to remember that we promised to hold to the Code of Ethics when we were inducted as a Lion. That our character as a Lions should be held to the highest standards as we meet the needs of our communi es. Secretaries, please don t forget to get your new club officers report to MyLCI by April 1st, you need to have that done to get extra point on the Governor s Contest. Working together in service to our communi es, Working together in service to our communi es, DG Ted Peterson 1st Vice District Governor Elect Jack Breitkreutz, District Governor Elect Judy Hoofnagle and District Governor Ted Peterson
THE 5M8 BEACON Page 2 DGE Judy Hoofnagle THE MIRROR I looked in the mirror this morning and what did I see? I saw a reflec on of me! How surprising!!...not!! We use the words rearview mirror looking back, to view what is behind us (cars?) or maybe our younger days, now past. Do you reflect, which, a mirror will do when a light shines on it, about your past and what you did and wanted to do? Are you that person you wanted to be then? That person, at one point in your life, may have had aspira ons to become? A mirror at one me, my great grandmothers me 1860 s, was called a looking glass. My great grandmother also called a window a looking glass. A window, where one can view the day, the present or is it a window of opportunity to see things that can s ll be done? As I enter a new decade of my life, I have reflected back, and yes I am doing what I have wanted to do, have done, and will con nue to do, To Serve. The mirror shows signs that I am not the young mother/wife of the 1970 s, but does show me, I have the strength and determina on to take this window of opportunity. An opportunity, I never envisioned, un l I was nudged by IPDG Duane to step up to serve District 5M8. In this window of opportunity, I want to reflect, shine the light on you the Lions of 5M8, I want to serve you and with you as we enter our 100 th year of serving our fellow mankind through Lions. My vision is to help this great district remain strong and vibrant as it has always been! I want us to a ract younger members, who will pick up the torch of Lions, and go forth into our next century helping our communi es, state, na on, and world to be a be er place to live. Another deriva ve of a window is from its Indo European roots is eye see. I want us to see the need and fulfill it, be it curing diabetes, finding ways to fight for curable blindness and hearing loss. Making this world a be er place for our children where there is no hunger, unheated homes, poverty or fear. If you have not found the passion, I would like to challenge/inspire you to find the passion of/for Lions! I want to mirror the passion of the 5M8 Lions! I thank all of you for the trust and faith you bestowed on me! I m humbled! I want to give the Mid Winter conven on Commi ee a huge shout out for the great job they did with the Conven on! You were very crea ve and innova ve! Again, THANK YOU!!! See when you drive home today, you ve got a big windshield on the front of your car. And you ve got a li le bi y rearview mirror. The reason the windshield is so large and the rearview mirror is so small is what s happened in your past is not near as important as what is in your future. Joel Osteen Un l next month! DGE Judy
Page 3 1st VDGE Jack Breitkreutz Shortly before our February 5M8 Mid Winter Conven on, my wife, Lion Carol and myself made the decision to officially run for the posi on of First Vice District Governor. This decision set off a flurry of le er wri ng and of securing our Princeton Lions Club s endorsement to become a candidate. Lion Carol made posters no ng my candidacy and off we went on Friday a ernoon to set up our Princeton Lions hospitality room poolside at the Kelly Inn in St. Cloud for our club s 15th consecu ve hospitality room. Throughout this me of set up, I took my posters around to the other hospitality rooms reques ng their permission to allow me to post my poster within their hospitality room. I was met with fantas c enthusiasm at each stop thus confirming to me that I had made the correct decision to run. There were many handshakes, hugs, and pats on the back from new Lions I met as well as past friendships. I also recall a toast at the Sobieski Lions room; and an invite to help clean campgrounds from the Richmond Lions; the inser on of my poster into the Valen ne s theme at our neighboring Duelm Lions club and my apprecia on for the efforts of a young Tinville Lions club organizing their hospitality room. My advice was the same to every room I visited and every lion I met. Thanks for par cipa ng in your conven on, work hard at the events your club supports, but HAVE FUN! Thanks for the support and confidence in vo ng and elec ng me your 1st Vice District Governor Elect. Your overwhelming recep on at the Sunday morning brunch will be something Lion Carol and I will never forget as we tried to maneuver through our first head table experience. Sit up straight, eat slowly, don t spill and pretend as if no one is watching... and HAVE FUN! 1st Vice District Governor Elect Jack Breitkreutz & Lion Carol

Page 5 ETHICAL STANDARDS AND CONDUCT (Club Officer) Ours is an associa on of service, and the manner in which the service is rendered is fully as important as the service itself. Our members, your fellow club officers, your District Governor, the Interna onal Board of Directors, the Execu ve Officers, the Administra ve Officers, the Interna onal Office staff and our communi es expect honest and ethical conduct from each of you every day. No act or request on the part of Lions clubs and their members, officers, board of directors or staff within our associa on with whom, or the community for whom, we render services can jus fy the breach of this guideline. Honest and ethical conduct is defined by four core values that serve as the founda on for our Ethical Standards: Integrity Lions Clubs Interna onal insists on the highest standards of personal and professional integrity. We must all make every possible effort to safeguard the associa on s assets. We must also comply with all associa on policies and applicable laws. Accountability Lions Clubs Interna onal expects all club officers to honor commitments as authorized and made on behalf of the associa on and take individual responsibility for all ac ons and outcomes. It has no tolerance for ethical viola ons. Teamwork Lions Clubs Interna onal seeks to maintain a service environment that encourages innova on, crea vity and posi ve results through teamwork. We must all prac ce leadership to train, inspire and promote full par cipa on and individual development for all Lions. We encourage open and effec ve communica on and interac on. Excellence Lions Clubs Interna onal is dedicated to fair treatment, mutual respect, diversity and trust. We must challenge each other to improve our services, our processes and ourselves. We must strive together to serve our membership and communi es and help the associa on achieve its goals. Your responsibili es begin with understanding of the core values and Ethical Standards of Lions Clubs Interna onal. Your role in the associa on demands an ongoing vigilance to maintain these standards of honest and ethical conduct. Lions Clubs Interna onal has adopted several policy statements that concern the associa on s Ethical Standards, such as our Mission Statement, Code of Ethics, An Discrimina on Guidelines for Service Ac vi es and Membership, Obliga ons of a Chartered Club, Use of Publicly Raised Funds, Rules of Audit, Conflict of Interest, Solicita on, and Privacy. The Interna onal Cons tu on and By Laws, the Club Officer Manual and the Interna onal Board Policy Manual provide informa on about these policy statements and addi onal guidance in the areas of ethical standards and conduct. In many instances, ethical standards intersect legal requirements. If an ethical or legal compliance issue arises that raises a ques on in your mind, you have a responsibility to bring that issue to the a en on of the appropriate Interna onal Board commi ee or Interna onal Office division (for example, the Finance and Headquarters Opera on Commi ee reviews Conflict of Interest issues; the Cons tu on and By Laws Commi ee and/or Legal Division review Legal issues). You may also bring ethical or legal concerns to the a en on of your District Governor, the Interna onal Board of Directors, the Execu ve Officers, or the Administra ve Officers of the associa on. The core values of the Ethical Standards of Lions Clubs Interna onal, along with the policies of the Interna onal Board of Directors, provide a guide and framework to help you understand what is expected from you and to help you make good decisions. As they are not all inclusive, your good and best judgment is essen al in doing the right and ethical thing. Please join us in con nuing Lions Clubs tradi on of honest and ethical prac ces in serving millions of people in need.
Page 6 LIONS CLUBS INTERNATIONAL PURPOSE To Organize, charter and supervise service clubs to be known as Lions clubs. To Coordinate the ac vi es and standardize the administra on of Lions clubs. To Create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world. To Promote the principles of good government and good ci zenship. To Take an ac ve interest in the civic, cultural, social and moral welfare of the community. To Unite the clubs in the bonds of friendship, good fellowship and mutual understanding. To Provide a forum for the open discussion of all ma ers of public interest; provided, however, that par san poli cs and sectarian religion shall not be debated by club members. To Encourage service minded people to serve their community without personal financial reward, and to encourage efficiency and promote high ethical standards in commerce, industry, professions, public works and private endeavors. LIONS CLUBS CODE OF ETHICS To Show my faith in the worthiness of my voca on by industrious applica on to the end that I may merit a reputa on for quality of service. To Seek success and to demand all fair remunera on or profit as my just due, but to accept no profit or success at the price of my own self respect lost because of unfair advantage taken or because of ques onable acts on my part. To Remember that in building up my business it is not necessary to tear down another s; to be loyal to my clients or customers and true to myself. Whenever a doubt arises as to the right or ethics of my posi on or ac on towards others, to resolve such doubt against myself. To Hold friendship as an end and not a means. To hold that true friendship exists not on account of the service performed by one to another, but that true friendship demands mothing but accepts service in the spirit in which it is given. Always to bear in mind my obliga ons as a ci zen to my na on, my state, and my community, and to give them my unswerving lyalty in word, act, and deed. To give them freely of my me, labor and means. To Aid others by giving my sympathy to those in distress, my aid to the weak, and my substance to the needy. To Be Careful with my cri cism and liberal with my praise; to build up and not destroy Lions Club Interna onal, 300 W. 22nd Street, Oak Brook, IL

Thank you to all that had a hand in making it such a great weekend. As I am going over my notes and pictures from the convention, it got me thinking about all the hugs, conversations, interactions, and meetings that touched me during that time. It made me think about a quote I read recently: People will forget what you said, People will forget what you did, But people will never forget how you made them feel. - Maya Agnelou. There were a lot of people I will never forget! Thank you! Congratulations to 1st Vice District Governor Elect Jack Breitkreutz & District Governor Elect Judy Hoofnagle on their new journey of leading the Lions of 5M8 into the new year.
