DGE Larry is very capable of providing the District with good leadership next year and I hope that you will give him the tremendous support you gave me. MEMBERSHIP: It has arrived The time has come for me to put out my last newsletter. These past 11 months have passed by very quickly. I feel that with all of the help from this year s cabinet we had a very successful year. We have two new clubs (both of which have been chartered) and the extension committee is working on two more clubs at the present time. PDG Ralph Gorecki, PDG Bill Landwehr, Zone Chair Donna Mae Landwehr (members of the extension committee) have worked very hard to get these clubs put together and were recognized with the International President s Extension Award as well as the two Guiding Lions (Zone Chair Frank Foigt and Lion Dan Leitner). Thanks to IPID Ross Thorfinnson for sharing his thoughts on Lionism at the W.I.S.H. charter night. Welcome W.I.S.H. Lions. I also want to thank all of the Clubs for the fine hospitality shown Sharon and me when we made our visits. We met many wonderful Lions and will remember this as a highlight of our year. I have tried to deliver as much information to all of you as possible that will help you remain the strong clubs I just received a letter from International President Lee of which I want to share a portion. Every year, at nearly the same time around the world, many Lions clubs go through the ritual of dropping members for various reasons. Dropping members is a serious step, an action governed by strict procedural and constitutional requirements. It is a significant action that requires careful consideration, and must never be routine. The first reaction in most cases should be retention, not expulsion. We are being asked to consider first exploring positive alternatives. Lions often times it is much easier to keep a Lion than it is to find a new one to replace the one that you think you need to drop. There is a club questionnaire that is available to help you find out why Lions are not attending meetings, or club service projects and fundraisers. Make use of these available tools. Contact a member of the membership committee and they are most happy to help you. At this point our membership numbers look very good. Through April we have added 321 new members, but we have dropped 229 for a net gain of 92. But, we also had to make adjustments at the beginning of the year of 28 so our net gain at this time is 64. If clubs take the above information to heart and don t drop too many we will show a nice net gain. Thanks Lions.

2 FINAL NOTE: I asked Sharon to write a few notes, but she said that it was my duty to do the newsletter. She did say that she had a very enjoyable year, but still being employed she is tired and will look forward to some rest after Detroit. HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES: PDG Linus Dingman was inducted into the MD5- M Lions Hall of Fame. Lion Linus has served many years on the 5M-8 Cabinet and continues to serve as a Multiple Youth Outreach Chair. We hope to see many of you in Detroit at the International Convention in July. You can help us get our candidate for International Director PCC Maynard Rucks elected. He will make a very good Director, which will continue Multiple District 5M s contribution to Lions International. MULTIPLE CONVENTION: The Multiple Convention is now history. It was a great convention. There were a total of 715 registrations representing 185 clubs in attendance. Seminars were great and were well attended. AWARDS: INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENTS AWARD: Congratulations to PCC Frank Loken for receiving the International President s Leadership Award. Lion Frank has been a hard working Lion for District 5M-8 as well as Multiple District 5M. He has done an extremely lot of work on both 5M and 5m-8 Foundations to get them in compliance with State regulations. PDG Linus Dingman and PID Ross Thorfinnson The late Lion Erwin Minks was also inducted in to the MD5-M Lions Hall of Fame posthumously. Lion Erwin Minks was a very dedicated Lion to the Princeton Lions Club and district 5M-8 especially in the area of work with the Hearing impaired. 3 FIRST TIMERS AWARD: Congratulations to Lions Linda Jorissen, (Staples 93 Lions) Deb Bialke and Don Polkamp (Ramey- Morrill Lions) for winning the First Timers contest three prizes and all coming to the 5M-8 Convention. This shows you how hard your 5M-8 Lions are willing to work. Lion Deb said I was going to put something in the newsletter about her because of comments she made to me. I will say that she is enthusiastic, hard working, and has a great deal of fun. She is doing everything to make sure she gets all the information she can about how to make the new Ramey-Morrill Lions Club run smoothly. 6 Rays of Hope On September 24, 2003, we felt a darkness descend upon this place. On the black granite, you walk the path of a tragic time in our lives. Shots rang out and shattered the hearts of those near and far. Lives were forever changed. In the center circle, we stand as a community embracing one another, The illusion of darkness threatens to separate and break us. But we hold onto our children the pillars at the center of our attention. Then and now, we hold onto all that we birth, nurture and love in our lives, memories of the past and our hope for the future. We are never alone. The world reaches out to support, uplift and carry us when we have lost our strength. Sit on a bench in the outer circle and feel the embrace and support of the world unseen. It will forever remain here to hold you and repair you to wholeness. There is no trouble that love cannot heal. A broken heart is only one that has opened wider. As you leave, carry the red rays with you. They reach outward reflecting hope and love. These are the beacons of light within each of us capable of transforming all situations and our world. --Marie Rollins LaForce On June 16, 2004 I will be golfing in a GOLF A THON to raise money for the RAYS OF HOPE MEMORIAL. The memorial will be built on ROCORI school grounds in response to the shooting on September 24, 2003, that killed two students, Aaron Rollins, 17 (our grandson) and Seth Bartell, 14. The memorial, as described by the families, is not intended to recognize or focus on Aaron or Seth, but rather is intended to mark an event that occurred within our communities and promote a sense of healing and growth.
