1 If you like baseball and spend some time looking up the stats of baseball players, you will find an interesting one under the lifetime achievements section. It has some rather impressive names on it. At the top of the list was Reggie Jackson. His name was followed by Willie Stargell. Also on the list, near the top, were Jose Canseco, Tony Perez, Mickey Mantle, Sammy Sosa, and Willie Mays. Bartlett Chapel News KEEP ON SWINGING! Do you know. What lifetime achievement this list represented? The most strikeouts. Can you believe it? Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays. These three men combined struck out almost 6,000 times. And yet, that s not the legacy they left to the game; each left a legacy of greatness. A key to that legacy can be found in the fact that they kept stepping up to the plate. Even AUGUST 2017 when the number of strikeouts were piling up, even when the slumps extended game after game, even when their failure caused their team to lose games, even when disgruntled fans called them overpaid bums they kept stepping up to the plate. They were successful because they kept stepping up to the plate and swinging the bat. A very wise man, who knew a little something about striking out Pastor Jeff, Page 2 In This Issue Pg Pastor Jeff 1,2 Bartlett History 2 Announcements 3 Calendar 4,5 Addl. 2 Pastor Jeff continued from Page 1 in life and persevering through the hardships of life, wrote a letter of love and encouragement. In his letter to a church, written from behind prison bars, after hardship after hardship and defeat after defeat, Paul wrote: I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Jesus Christ, is calling us. (Philippians 3:13-14) You may have a string of strikeouts behind you, and you may feel as though you re on the verge of setting the world s record for failure. Keep stepping up to the plate. No matter how many times you miss, if you keep swinging, you ll eventually make contact. Don t give up. Don t get stuck in the past with a strike out or some other disappointment or failure. Get back up. Dust yourself off. Pick up the bat. Step up to the plate and take another swing. Who knows? Perhaps the very next swing will be the one. Keep swinging and looking ahead through Jesus Christ. Never allow the failures or the disappointments of life to define you. For God, in Christ, is always calling you forward and with Christ, there is always another day and another swing. BARNABAS MINISTRY College Students and Supportive Adults Wanted This fall, Bartlett Chapel will be offering a program to support and encourage our college students. The program will be called the Barnabas Ministry. In the New Testament, Barnabas was an early convert to Christianity. He was a good man and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith. The disciples nicknamed him Barnabas, because it meant son of encouragement. Throughout the new school year, we want to provide encouragement to our college students. If you have a college student in your family that might appreciate receiving prayer support, as well as occasional encouraging notes, please submit their name to Linda Reed at or jlmkkreed@yahoo.com. Once their names have been submitted, students will be asked to complete a short information sheet to help their secret friend know a little about them. Students will not be included until they complete and return the form either to Linda or Cathy Stenger. UNITED METHODIST WOMEN S NOTES Getting Ready for Holiday Time!! 4 Bartlett Chapel Church Council Minutes July 18, 2017 (To be approved at next meeting) Council Chair, Chuck Ash, called the meeting to order in the church library. There were sixteen (16) in attendance. Pastor Julie opened the meeting with devotions and prayer. The Council reviewed the minutes from the May meeting. Chris Mains made a motion that the minutes be approved. Bob Niemeyer seconded the motion. The Council approved the May minutes. Old Business: Ruth Ann Franklin suggested that a sign be made for the refrigerator in the kitchen, requesting that any food left in there be identified and dated, with name of owner, if applicable. Some type of note paper should also be provided. This would help in keeping the refrigerator cleaned out. Pastor Julie said she would speak with Cathy Stenger about working on this project. Financial Reports: Larry Stuffle gave the Treasurer s report, followed by the Financial Summary, which was presented by Larry Burns. There was an overview provided, of money spent by each committee, so that they might see where they stand on money left to use for the year. It was suggested that the money still left in the Share Jesus account be used so that account might be closed out. That money is to be used for facilities. New Business: Todd Griffith reported that the Danville Metropolitan Police Department will be sponsoring a National Night Out on Tuesday, August 1, Free booth space will be provided. Todd had been asked by a member of the congregation to bring this before the Church Council. RSVP for booth space must be made by July 23, Everyone on the Council was in favor of being involved, however, they were concerned about having time to do it properly. Kirsten Mains made a motion that this project be turned over to the Outreach Committee to proceed, if they feel like time permits. Bob Niemeyer seconded the motion. The Council approved. Ruth Ann Franklin mentioned that there have been several duplications on the Sunday Volunteer Schedule. Pastor Julie agreed to speak with Cathy Stenger about checking on this when she types the list for the newsletter. Trustees Report: Jim Sell reported that all past projects have basically been completed. The Eagle Scout project is completed and flowers have been planted. The tree at the parsonage has been removed. Issues with the new security system have been resolved. Bob Niemeyer mentioned that there is another tree west of the parsonage that might need some pruning. Jim said he would check on that. The next project the Trustees will be working on is replacing the flooring and possibly the wall coverings in the women s restroom and maybe the men s restroom. Plans are just beginning and there are not estimates at this time. 4
