1 Bartlett Chapel News June 2016 KEEP ON SWINGING! If you like baseball and spend some time looking up the stats of baseball players, you will find an interesting one under the lifetime achievements section. It has some rather impressive names on it. At the top of the list was Reggie Jackson. His name was followed by Willie Stargell. Also on the list, near the top, were Jose Canseco, Tony Perez, Mickey Mantle, Sammy Sosa, and Willie Mays. Do you know what lifetime achievement this list represented? The most strikeouts. Can you believe it? Reggie Jackson, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays. These three men combined struck out almost 6,000 times. And yet, that s not the legacy they left to the game; each left a legacy of greatness. A key to that legacy can be found in the fact that they kept stepping up to the plate. Even when the number of strikeouts were piling up, even when the slumps extended game after game, even when their failure caused their team to lose games, even when disgruntled fans called them overpaid bums they kept stepping up to the plate. They were Pastor Jeff, Page 2 DON T MISS bible school from june 12-16! Invite your children s friends to join them for an exciting week of VBS! At VBS, your children will explore what it means to follow Jesus through dark times through Biblelearning activities, catchy songs, games, yummy treats, and more! Plus, kids will learn to look for evidence of God all around them through something called, God Sightings. Kids at Cave Quest VBS also will join a missions effort to collect non-perishable food items for our local Buddy Bags program, which allows schoolchildren who don t have enough food to take some extras home to their families on the weekends. Items needed for this program are cans of vegetables, cans of soup, mac & cheese, fruit cups, small boxes of cereal, oatmeal packets, cereal bars, etc. For more information: (317) (church office)
2 July news deadline Sunday, June 12, is the deadline for the July edition of the Bartlett Chapel Newsletter. You may turn items into the office or them to Please turn news in on time. We cannot include news that is late. 2 BARTLETT HISTORY 50 Years Ago June 1966 Rev. Glenn Clark was our new minister. 40 Years Ago June 13, 1976 Bartlett Chapel had a bicentennial picnic. The Bartlett Band made its debut and Esda Myers won the bicentennial poem contest. Jim Sell won the diaper changing contest (no Pampers allowed), and Thelma Stevenson won the husband-calling contest. 35 Years Ago June 22, 1981 The second annual Father-Son Banquet was held at the home of John & Nancy Munn. The theme was a western roundup. 30 Years Ago June 1986 We are getting air-conditioning in our church. 25 Years Ago June 2, 1991 Krysta Roberts, infant daughter of Lynn Roberts, was dedicated during the Sunday morning services. 20 Years Ago June 15, 1996 the 17th annual Father-Son Banquet was held in the shelter house with several animals from the Indianapolis Zoo as guests. 16 Years Ago July 9-10, 2000 The Bartlett Chapel Partners in Prayer team participated in Relay for Life at the Danville High School track. There were six cancer survivors on our team. One or more team members were walking on the track for 24 hours. The team raised $3,218 for cancer research. Rex McClain, Bartlett Historian Pastor Jeff continued from Page 1 successful because they kept stepping up to the plate and swinging the bat. A very wise man, who knew a little something about striking out in life and preserving through the hardships of life, wrote a letter of love and encouragement. In his letter to a church, written from behind prison bars after hardship and defeat after defeat, Paul wrote: I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Jesus Christ, is calling us. (Philippians 3:13-14) You may have a string of strikeouts behind you, and you may feel as though you re on the verge of setting the world record for failure. Keep stepping up to the plate. No matter how many times you miss, if you keep swinging you ll eventually make contact. Don t give up. Don t get stuck in the past with a strike out or some other disappointment or failure. Get back up. Dust yourself off. Pick up the bat. Step up to the plate, and take another swing. Who knows? Perhaps the very next swing will be the one. Keeping swinging and looking ahead through Jesus Christ. Never allow the failures or the disappointments of life to define you. For God, in Christ, is always calling you forward, and with Christ, there is always another day and another swing. Grace and peace be with you. Pastor Jeff Reed, Senior Pastor Save the date: picnic Save the date now for 5 p.m. Saturday, July 16, for an all-church pitch-in picnic at the Bartlett Chapel shelter house that includes a white elephant silent auction. Start searching around your home or at thrift stores/yard sales now for that humorous item to wrap up in Christmas paper and auction off at this event! All proceeds from the silent auction will go toward purchasing updated Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations for the church. Please plan to join us.

6 To our family at Bartlett Chapel, It is very hard to find the words to express the gratitude that we feel for all you have done: the food, cards, kind words, support and many prayers. You have shared our joys. Thank you for also sharing in our sorrow. May God bless you all, Larry, Jamie, Rachel & Sarah Burns Dear Bartlett Chapel, What a wonderful Celebration of Life Service for my wife, Nancy. Bartlett Chapel was a major part of her life for all of her life. I want to thank everyone that played a part in the service and especially the United Methodist Women for a delicious meal for family and friends. Nancy was truly honored by all the cards, flowers, gifts and the presence of all who came. Thank you, Bartlett. You were our Rock throughout. John Munn Dear Bartlett Chapel, I want to thank everyone for the love and support my family has been shown these past few years as we journeyed with my Mom s illness. We are at peace knowing that she is finally whole again and in the arms of the Lord. We appreciate all the cards, notes, flowers, and especially the hugs we received during Mom s Celebration of Life service on Saturday. Bartlett was a THANK YOU S big part of Mom s life, and I also feel blessed to be part of this church family. In Christ s Love, Molly, Daryl & Jack Hensley Dear pastors and Bartlett Chapel congregation, Thank you all so very much for all the love you have shown to each of us over the past month. Thank you for the cards, flowers, hugs, and prayers. As we cry each day, please keep us in your prayers, as I don t think we will ever stop crying. The loss of our mother is by far the greatest sorrow we have ever felt. We thank each and every one of you for being more than just a friend to her. Thank you for being her family. Randy, Gary, Kayla, Levi, Liz & Alice Hoover Dear Bartlett Chapel family, Thank you so much for all the flowers, cards, the afghan with the Lord s Prayer printed on it, and especially for all the prayers for Brian.
