1 Bartlett Are you plugged into the power? When Norris Dam was first built in the hills of East Tennessee, a worker on the night shift noticed something that seemed very strange to him. He could not believe what he was seeing. He could hear the sounds of the great dynamos humming powerfully in the night, generating incredible amounts of electricity. But when he looked across the lake, he noticed that every cabin in sight was lit not by electrical energy but by kerosene lamps. Chapel News When asked why, he was told that transmission lines had not yet been installed. Think of that! Those folks lived in the shadow of this magnificent hydroelectric dam, but they could not benefit from its power because they were not yet connected to it. The power was there, but they were not plugged in or hooked up to it. This is a parable for many folks today, including us. God s presence and power are available to us. may 2016 God s strength and energy are as close at hand as our breath. But many of us are not connected to it. We live our lives in the shadow of the power source, but we are not plugged in. How many of us live without any thought of God s presence and power with us daily (unless, of course, some big issue is confronting us)? We try to live life all on Pastor Jeff, Page 2 In This Issue Pg Bartlett History 2 Thank You s 2 General News 3 Graduate News 4 Vacation Bible School 5,6 Church Council Notes 7 Volunteer List 8 Celebrate Pentecost with Us on May 22! PLEASE SIGN UP NOW TO ATTEND OUR MAY 7 LADIES SPRING BRUNCH! The Ladies Spring Brunch will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7, in the multi-purpose room. All ladies and girls are invited and encouraged to bring a neighbor, family member, or friend. Besides a delicious brunch, there will be a silent auction of themed baskets again. The baskets will vary in themes, size and age appeal. These make great gifts for Mother s Day, birthdays, or just for fun. To help with food or decorating, contact Susi Thibodeaux or Brenda Wyant. All baskets need to be in MPR by Wednesday, May 4, and anyone who can help set up Friday evening should contact Brenda Wyant about the time. 2 June news deadline Sunday, May 15, is the deadline for the June Newsletter. You may turn items into the office or them to Please turn news in on time. BARTLETT HISTORY 35 Years Ago May 3, 1981 New members are Bobby and Wilma Crawford. 25 Years Ago May 1991 Tom & Katherine Stiles, Joe Thurmond, Sophia Pickett, and Nancy Munn went on a mission trip to Ecuador. Larry Clarkson is serving in the Gulf War. 20 Years Ago April 12, 1996 Rev. Robert E. Hayden passed away. Rev. Hayden was our minister at Bartlett Chapel from June 1955 until June Remember When The United Methodist Women purchased altar vases in memory of deceased members at the suggestion of Dorothy Brooks. The ladies presented a skit, Ladies of the Bible, to help finance the project. Rex McClain, Bartlett Historian Pastor Jeff continued from Page 1 our own as it is all up to us. We try to deal with the hectic pace of life all on our own. We try to forgive someone who has deeply hurt us or someone we love all on our own. We try to face the weight of caring for a loved one or the heartache of grief all on our own. We strive to make our lives work all on our own. We, too, live in the shadow of a great power source and presence, yet we are not connected. God has given us the gift of His Presence in the Holy Spirit to give us that strength, that wisdom, that peace, that comfort, that guidance, that patience, that courage, that power that we need to live our lives with hope and purpose and joy. The question is, are we plugged into the power source? Are our lives open to God s presence and power given in the Holy Spirit? Are we willing to seek and listen and follow and trust in God s love and presence in our day-to-day lives? Paul prayed that very hope for each of us. I would encourage you to read and make that prayer for your own your life and for Bartlett Chapel UMC in the days ahead. You can find it in Ephesians 3:14-21 and then close by praying or singing words of that great chorus we sing in worship: Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me. Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me. Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me. Spirit of the Living God, fall afresh on me. Remember, stay connected to the power source in your life, to Christ and His Presence with us in the Holy Spirit, and may you grow in grace and love. Grace and Peace be with you. Pastor Jeff Reed, Senior Pastor THANK YOU S Dear Bartlett Chapel, I want to thank everyone for coming to my 80th party and for all the beautiful cards. This is a truly loving church. God bless you. Marlene Jones Dear Bartlett Chapel friends, Many thanks for your prayers; for Pastor Jeff and others who visited Naomi while in the hospital and in rehab; for the pretty quilt; and for the food, nice cards, and calls. Also, special thanks to all of you who came to the celebration for our 69th wedding anniversary and for Joe s 90th birthday. We also appreciated all the pretty cards and notes! The blessing of the Lord be upon you. Psalm 129:8 Naomi and Joe Thurmond 2

We have cooked and had science experiments. Field trips to the apple orchard, library, firehouse and kindergarten are just a few places we have visited this year. Birthday and holiday celebrations were always fun times. This year for Easter, Elliot Kolsto blessed us with handmade crosses for our Easter resurrection eggs. These will be special keepsakes the students will have to remind them of the sacrifice Jesus made for us. Students will end the year with a closing program at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 19, in the Bartlett Chapel sanctuary. Please join us as the students take us on the adventure, Down on Grandpa s Farm, showcasing many of the things they learned this year! It s sure to be an evening of fun. Hope to see you then, Mrs. Kim Vandagrifft Bartlett Chapel UMC Preschool Director
