2 THANK YOU S Dear Bartlett Chapel, Dear ladies of the United Methodist Women, Thank you so much for your generous donation of $ to help the homeless in our community and for your commitment to take a collection of cookies, socks and hygiene items for our local homeless. Your generosity comes at a time when the Project Homeless ministry can greatly use this assistance. I know the Lord always puts the right people in the right place. Thank you for listening to the Lord s calling! You will bless those who receive assistance more than you know. May God continue watch over your ministry and bless you always. In Christ, Ed Calton, Director Project Homeless Dear Bartlett Chapel, I would like to give a heartfelt Thank You to the Quilters and the Bartlett Chapel congregation for the absolutely beautiful quilt that was given to me. I will always cherish it. Every time I look at it, I will think about how wonderful and generous the people of Bartlett Chapel are. It will certainly comfort me as I battle the side effects and treatment of the Lyme Disease. We are lucky to be part of such an amazing family. In God s Love, Trissa Whitesell Dear Bartlett Chapel family, I want to thank everyone for their calls, cards, and prayers as I have moved from my longtime home to my new home at Westside Garden Plaza. 4 The council meeting opened with worship in the sanctuary. Council Chair Chuck Ash called the business meeting to order in Rooms 11 & 12. The February minutes were reviewed by the council. Pastor Don asked that the minutes be approved with a correction that the May council meeting be removed from the schedule since he is leaving in June. Bob Niemeyer made the motion to accept the minutes as corrected. Jim Sell seconded the motion. The council unanimously voted to approve the corrected minutes. New Business: Jim Sell, chair of trustees, presented a plan (attached) for moving the church kitchen upstairs, which included a scope of work and a kitchen layout. Sell stated that the project would cost $30,000 to $35,000 and the money would come from Share Jesus facility improvement money. He also said this project was talked about when the new sanctuary was built years ago and never has come to fruition. The project was presented to include new cabinets, islands, cabinet tops and flooring, with a serving window into the upstairs multi-purpose room. New refrigerators also are planned at this time. Most of the cost is in the cabinets and the countertops. He stated that the trustees had reviewed many plans, but this is the one with which the current kitchen crew was pleased. Much discussion ensued regarding the proposal. Pastor Don noted that according to prior board minutes, a congregational meeting on the kitchen facility has to take place Council notes april 21, 2015 before the board can vote on the kitchen proposal. He suggested that Pastor Jeff Reed, our new pastor, should be involved in this discussion and decision rather than him. Others concurred that a decision could not be made until a new pastor arrived. Pastor Julie asked if the trustees could look concurrently at a kitchen plan and at improving classroom space downstairs. Louise Hoffman made a motion to table the current kitchen proposal. In the meantime, the board of trustees is to develop a proposal for classrooms downstairs. A congregational meeting will be held on both proposals after Pastor Jeff Reed arrives in July. Bob Niemeyer seconded the motion. The board vote was a consensus to pass Hoffman s motion as proposed. In other new business, Louise Hoffman, staff-pastor-parish relations chair, noted that she was presenting to the board a salary of $69,500 for Pastor Jeff Reed, who starts July 1. The church will be asking him to do the visitation, at least until the end of 2015, and then the church will need to decide if we hire a visitation pastor. The travel expenses that we currently have allocated for Pastor Don Cline, who starts his new appointment July 1, & Pastor Dennis Dodson, who is retiring at the end of June, will be used for Pastor Reed. (Travel expenses are additional to salary.) Louise Hoffman made the motion to accept Pastor Reed s salary package as stated. Bob Niemeyer seconded the motion. Pastor Reed s salary was unanimously adopted by the board. Old Business: Sarah Gottlieb asked if anyone had stepped forward to lead Operation Christmas Child? The answer was no. Bob Niemeyer reported that he has continued to canvass the congregation for a new missions leader to replace him and his wife, Earlene. If anyone has suggestions, please let them know. Financial Report & Financial Summary: Joe Dugan presented the financial reports. The board had no changes to them. Dugan also stated that the church received a letter from the Bishop s office thanking us for being a church that tithed above 90 percent for Pastor s Report: Pastor Don will no longer be preaching June 21. He will preach June 14 instead, which also is the day of his goodbye reception. That will be his final day to preach at Bartlett Chapel UMC. However, Pastor Don will remain fully responsible until the end of June for our church and takes that seriously. From June 15-30, he will be on vacation, but Pastor Julie will know how to contact him in case of an emergency. Pastor Julie and Todd Griffith are preaching the final two Sundays of June. Pastor Jeff Reed will preach the first Sunday of July. Pastor Don and Jean will continue to keep us in their prayers. Pastor Dennis Dodson s last day will be June 30. Pastor Don closed the meeting in prayer. Next council meeting: 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 21 (with Pastor Reed) 4

Cheese, Pastor Don felt a calling to go into the ministry after 17 successful years in the business world. He entered the ministry only after Jean agreed to support him. The Clines first served in Charlestown, Ind., where he was a student pastor and completed his chaplain training at Norton Hospital in Louisville, Ky. He drove to Asbury Theological Seminary (close to Lexington, Ky.) three or four days a week while also working at a J.C. Penney. He graduated from seminary in May Pastor Don s first full-time church was at Lincoln Hills UMC in English, Ind. He since has served in Orleans, Ind., and Poseyville, Ind., before coming to Bartlett Chapel UMC. Pastor Don has been appointed to serve at 6 Logansport First UMC starting July 1. Jean has worked various jobs that served children in afterschool programs in both English and Orleans. In Poseyville, Jean and a friend started an afterschool program for 4th- to 8th-graders. When the Clines moved to Avon, Jean worked in a drug and prevention program for 1.5 years at Pike Township (Afternoon Rocks). She was a special needs assistant at Charlestown Elementary School from while Pastor Don was in seminary. The Clines have two daughters, Heather Read (Aaron) and Adrienne Cline. Adrienne will be married July 10 to Justin Bessler at the Washington Township Park Pavilion. The Clines have two grandsons, Owen Read and Evan Read. Jean s father will be 95 this August. Pastor Don always Thank You! Open House Ministry Celebration For Pastor Don & Jean Cline For Pastor Dennis & Dorothy Dodson (retiring) 2-6 p.m. Sunday, June 14 Bartlett Chapel UMC encourages reading the Bible. He lists his sermons and Scriptures in the monthly church newsletters and has encouraged several members to read the whole Bible in a year s time. In 2013, Pastor Don led a group of Bartlett members on a trip to the Holy Land. Pastor Don studies different commentaries on the Scriptures and takes notes during the week. On Saturday night, he goes to his office at the church and puts together his sermon. Each of his two Sunday sermons are presented differently. He uses note cards and follows what God wants him to say. Pastor Don s hobbies include gardening, golf, reading, and cheering on the Chicago Bears, Indiana University, and the New York Yankees. Pastor Don & Jean both enjoy taking walks together. Jean s hobbies are knitting, sewing, reading, and gardening. In fact, she can be seen sitting in Sunday School class knitting away and occasionally making a comment about the lesson. At Bartlett Chapel, Jean has worked with Wednesday Night Live, taught Sunday School, worked at Vacation Bible School, and enjoyed teaching elementary age children during worship.
