1 A couple of weeks ago, I attended a conference for pastors from all over the midwest at Lake Chautaugua in northern Ohio along the coast of Lake Erie. I had never been there before and I feel in love with the place. It is a small lake village that reminded me of a Norman Rockwell painting of how life used to be when I was a child. Kids were riding bicycles and folks were out walking along the shops Bartlett Chapel News MAKING ROOM FOR ONE MORE and cafes. The weather was great and I really enjoyed my three days there. (And, yes, I did attend the conference sessions!) However, I learned a few things I had not expected on my trip. Since Linda was back at work at Sycamore School, I attended by myself. I was okay with this, as I am more introverted than people think I am, and I enjoy some time SEPTEMBER 2017 to myself. I was able to sit down along the lakeshore and enjoy a good book and just the sights and sounds of the kids fishing and people out enjoying the day. But, I struggled a couple of times, when I went to the workshops. In one, it was held in a theater type setting and when I walked in, all the end seats were taken. Which meant I had to ask folks to Pastor Jeff, Page 2 In This Issue Pg Pastor Jeff 1,2 Bartlett History 2 Announcements 3 Calendar 4,5 Addl. 2 Pastor Jeff continued from Page 1 let me through and climb over them to get to a seat. If people had simply moved to the middle, I would have been able to take a seat and not had to feel as if I was inconveniencing anyone. So, when I went to another session in that same place, I got there a little earlier and sat in the middle of a row and left the end seats open for others. The other thing I noticed is that many of the clergy attending came as a group or with their spouses. At a couple of the meals, we had round tables with eight chairs. My frustration was, I was unsure of where to sit, because I didn t want to take a seat and break up a group, when I was by myself. I would have appreciated someone noticing and welcoming me to sit at their table rather than the awkwardness of wondering where there was a safe place to sit. At one dinner, we stood around talking in a small area and, again, being alone, I did not know anyone, and I am not one to force my way into a conversation (most of the time), and it would have been helpful had someone reached out and included me in their group. I have tried to do that for others, when the shoe is on the other foot, but no one did that for me. However, I am really glad I went, because the conference was very educational, and I enjoyed the speakers and found them to be very friendly and welcoming. And that is my point. I am not sharing this story to whine or complain, but to remind all of us, (myself included) of the importance of hospitality. Of simply being welcoming and friendly to, of all people, folks we don t know or see by themselves. The Bible encourages us that when Peter challenges us to be hospitable to one another. Perhaps some of us need to move over in the pews, to be sure there is always room for one more on the end. Perhaps we also need to make sure that we welcome people around us in our lives, including here at Bartlett Chapel. We can easily do this by simply noticing people around us and taking the initiative to speak, and invite and welcome that person or persons to our Sunday school class, Bible study, lunch meeting, worship service, or any other moment God gives us with that person. I think one of the great gifts of Jesus is the way that he noticed people and welcomed them into his life. He noticed people that many religious people didn t even see! And he reached out and spoke and blessed and invited and included them in his life. And, 2 you know, that really is a gift, that all of us can practice as well. We can all be hospitable people, friendly people, inviting people, welcoming people. I was reminded of that for my own life in my time at Lake Chautauqua, and I am determined to be more intentional that way toward others. What about you? How will you welcome folks into your life and this community of faith? How will you live out the gift of hospitality? Because it may seem like a small thing, but, to a guest, it really matters. It really matters. Grace and Peace be with you.
