3 HELLO FROM THE MANSE Dear Friends It seems that 2018 has thus far been a year of special celebrations. Earlier this year the Church of Scotland celebrated 50 years since the decision to ordain women to the ministry of Word and Sacrament, Newtown Church celebrated 150 years, the RAF celebrated 100 years and this year marks 100 years since WW1. Our NHS celebrated 70 years, and this year marks 70 years since the beginning of what was the new town of Glenrothes. At the Sunday Service whilst I was on holiday, the minister at Glenrothes spoke about some of the research he had done in preparation for the service, by looking at documents held in one of the libraries. What he found was interesting and all the more so, as an unnamed architect, involved with planning the town, wrote in The Glenrothes Bulletin in January 1955, referring to scripture in his vision and plan for the new town. The piece was entitled "WHATSOEVER THINGS ARE LOVELY". He referred to the town founded by Philip and named after him as Philippi, saying that: Like our own New Town it was situated in the northern part of the country about eight miles from the sea. It too had looked to the west for many of its colonists until, in the time of St. Paul, it had become an important city, with privileges not unlike a Scottish Royal Burgh under the Stuarts. He went on to note that: It is not surprising therefore, that this mixed, lively and independent community formed an active church, nor that later, St Paul, writing from the growing tedium of Roman captivity, showed a peculiar affection for the Philippians. He was not slow, however, to warn them against the grumblings and personal feelings that detracted from the value of their effort. What I found fascinating about this was that whether you have lived in your community all your life or only for a short time, your ancestors would have come from somewhere else, just as happened in the new towns, to settle and build a community. I wonder if the architects referred to scripture in the same way when they were making their plans. Rev Sheila 3

7 OUR NEW CHURCH WEBSITE The Parish Churches of Maxton & Mertoun with Newtown with St Boswells (4 Kirks on the Tweed) The Kirk Sessions in our Charge have decided that it would be beneficial to have a dedicated website for all our churches. The new website is being created by a small team representing the Charge, led by Jim Ross of Newtown Church. The content for the site is being developed and when you receive this newsletter, it will be available to view online! To look at it in the first instance, you need to type the following domain name into your internet browser: The development of the site is ongoing and further material will be added as quickly as time and expertise allow! If you have any information you would like to see on the web pages or if you see something which is not right please let Jim know by Web4churches@gmail.com If you are looking for anything on the website, there is a Search Box at the foot of the Home Page. BLYTHSWOOD CARE SHOEBOX APPEAL 2018 Many of you have taken part in the annual shoebox appeal organised by Blythswood Care. In 2018 the charity will celebrate the 25th year of the shoebox appeal. Sadly, the need for filled shoeboxes is as great this year as it was 25 years ago. Leaflets for the Shoebox Appeal will appear soon in all four churches. If you have not taken part before, please give it a try. Filling the shoeboxes is good fun and they mean a great deal to the needy people in different parts of the world who receive them. To be delivered in time for Christmas, filled boxes should be handed in to churches on or before Sunday 4th November. If you have empty shoeboxes that you do not need, please recycle them by handing them in to any of the churches. 7

8 Newtown Parish Church Charity No. SC COME & SING ALL-AGE, ALL-ABILITY CHOIR Choir Leader: Derek Reid During June, Newtown Come and Sing Community Choir and Kidsong, had to put to the test just how far they had progressed in their singing in less than six months, with three public performances in the space of as many weeks. Both choirs joined together first at the start of June to entertain the folks attending Newtown Primary School Summer Fair. We surprised ourselves with how much we enjoyed our performance, and a warm reception boosted our confidence for the main event singing at Newtown Church 150th Anniversary celebrations. Facing a packed church was daunting, but we overcame our nerves and gave it our very best, even managing a descant harmony in the Stuart Townend arrangement of The Lord s my Shepherd and singing in a two-part round For God so loved the world by John Hardwick. (In rehearsals, the members of Kidsong had proved themselves significantly better at mastering two-part singing than the adults!) Participation in this celebration service had been one of the initial aims of the choir, and we were fair chuffed with ourselves for achieving this. A member of the congregation was overheard afterwards saying they were better than I thought they d be praise indeed! Our final performance was back at the Community Wing for the Newtown Hour of Praise. Some of the members of Kidsong came along from the school to join the adult choir in leading worship and interacting with the NHOP congregation. Adults and children alike spent time modelling plasticine whilst reflecting on God s message to Jeremiah on how God can remodel us just like a potter can remould a clay pot if we allow him to. As well as our new-found confidence in singing in public, the members of the choir have all made new friendships and seen improvement in both physical and mental health over a short time. Although I will be moving on to pastures new at the end of the summer, Derek and the choir would love more people to join them when choir restarts in the autumn look out for posters with dates! Rachel Wilson Project funded by The Church of Scotland Go For it Fund. 8

9 RETIREMENT PRESENTATION Our retiring Newsletter Editor, Blair Cummock, was presented with a John Martin picture of St Boswells Main Street and Church, in recognition, by all Churches in the Charge, of his commitment as Newsletter Editor for 18 years. Thank You Blair! Charity No: SC BUILD A HOUSE IN TANZANIA FUNDRAISING The total raised as at 31 July is 4,236. By the time you read this Newsletter, our fund raising will have come to an end. The 5p pieces collected at Newtown will be counted in Newtown Church on Friday 7th September at 6.30p.m. and anyone who would like to come along and help to count will be very welcome. Refreshments will be available! The final total will be announced at the United Café Church service in St Boswells Church Hall on Sunday 30th September at 10.30am, when a cheque will be presented to a representative of the Vine Trust. DEDICATIONS During St Boswells morning worship on 20 May, a new Pulpit Fall and new Bibles were dedicated. The gold cross on the white Fall was embroidered in the early 1960s by lady members of the congregation. It was removed from the original fall and stitched to a new one. New pew bibles and a larger version for the readers lectern, were also dedicated. They were purchased in memory of the late Jim (Eck) and Alison Wilson from their legacy to the Church. 9

10 150 TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS IN NEWTOWN Over the weekend of 16th and 17th June, Newtown Church congregation marked and celebrated the 150th anniversary of the present Church building. On Saturday 16th June, despite the wet weather, a steady stream of visitors came to enjoy the exhibition of wedding dresses and christening robes worn at celebrations in the church. The oldest wedding dress on display was only a year younger than the church, having been worn in 1869 and possibly the oldest christening robe was first worn in Also on display were history boards showing major events in the church over the fifteen decades since it was built, together with photographs and other memorabilia and information about many wedding traditions. On the afternoon of Sunday 17th June a large congregation including members past and present gathered for a service of celebration. The minister, Rev Sheila Moir, and Assistant Minister, Mrs Rachel Wilson, conducted the service and we were very honoured to welcome Professor Murray Campbell, Moderator of the Presbytery of Melrose and Peebles, who led the opening prayers and Rt Rev Susan Brown, Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland who preached the sermon. 10

11 Newtown community choir Come and Sing!, under the leadership of Derek Reid and with ages ranging from 5 to 75, also featured in the service. We are very grateful to everyone who helped to make the exhibition and service of celebration possible the people who entrusted their precious dresses and photographs to us, those who loaned mannikins and dolls, the people who worked so hard preparing for and setting up the exhibition, the bakers and tea makers, the photographers, all who took part in the service and, of course, the people who came along to join in the celebrations over the weekend. 11

Ian Skinner is the speaker and there will be a display of artefacts from both World Wars. Hand knitted poppies with safety pins attached will be available for a donation. Everyone is welcome to this meeting. The Guild project for this session is The Sailors Society and on 8 November their Leith Chaplain will be our speaker. Just after Easter I received an from the Church of Scotland World Mission to let me know what this year's stamp appeal is for. It will support centres for young people with learning difficulties and disabilities in the Ukraine. These centres are supported by our partners: the Ukraine Reformed Church in Transcarpathia and will provide valuable support to children and young people who live with disabilities. Thanks to these centres, the young folk have the opportunity to thrive, to make friends and to take part in a range of actives which include reading and writing as well as massages, music and games to name a few. Also, the families of these young people are given support with the opportunity to meet other parents with a child or young person with a disability. I know it is not Christmas but if you get a letter with a stamp on it please keep it for me as Mr Scott who collects the stamps from me for World Mission is finding it harder each year to get stamps. Thank you to everyone who gives me stamps. I really appreciate it. Ann Smith 13

Newtown War Memorial at 1.30pm: Act of Remembrance PRAYER You must be born again You must all be born again... You must be born again John Chapter 3 verses 3-8 He was a man who was well read in the Jewish Law, an important man in his city, relatively wealthy, a man with authority, and well respected. What others thought of him was important to him, and so it was that under cover of darkness he visited the man whom most of the authorities wanted to be rid of because the things he said unsettled them, in fact shook their foundations. Every word that JESUS spoke on earth had significance for eternity, for our eternity. This was the reason burning in his heart which led Nicodemus to JESUS that night, because he recognised the authority in HIM that was different. JESUS immediately went to the heart of the matter for Nicodemus saying, No one can see the Kingdom of GOD unless he is born again. Three times in that conversation of a few minutes in the darkness of night, JESUS brought light into his mind and soul. HE included not only Nicodemus, in HIS Words, but every human being, No one can enter unless... (verse 5). HIS Words You must be born again... are the heart of the matter for every human being since the Fall in Eden. They are the whole reason for HIS First Coming to the earth You must be born again.. The most vital prayer in the life of any human being is simply to pray from the heart: LORD JESUS, forgive my sins and come into my heart and life. Believe HIM and thank HIM, for HE will come. Here are the Words of JESUS. You must be born again... Just as I am, without one plea but that THY Blood was shed for me, and that THOU bidd st me come to THEE O LAMB of GOD, I come.
