3 HeLLo from THe MaNSe Dear Friends, I feel a bit like the white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland as he runs around trying to get to where he should be at the same time shouting I m late, I m late for a very important date! And for me this month that is the date of the deadline for the newsletter again. Like many people waking up this morning you will now know how late I was the weather outside did not help how I felt. It was a mood that many people friends on facebook, some of whom live in the States or had connections were feeling on what had been a momentous result. But like so many election results in the last couple of years, there will be those who are disappointed and those who are elated. It is why most of us who live in a democracy and are given the freedom to choose who will govern our country, know what happens, and the result is not always what we would have wanted. But once the initial shock and disappointment of those who feel this way is over, life will go on and it is nearly Christmas, although even that may not be liked by absolutely everyone. The Christmas trees will be going up, we will be decking the halls with bells and holly, the mistletoe and mulled wine will be shared, and we will be ringing the bells for Christmas day, as Christians celebrate the birth of Christ, the light of the world, a light that brings hope, even in the darkest of times. Some may think it irrelevant that we would even celebrate the birth of God s son, our saviour, but in the difficult times that lie ahead it is something for Christians to keep hold of and hope that there may be one day, peace on earth and goodwill among all men and women everywhere. And soon after we have opened the presents, eaten the turkey (or nut roast) and trimmings, not forgetting the trifle, we shall say farewell to 2016 and herald in a New Year with hopes, dreams and promises there may, one day, be a few resolutions for good measure, in the hope of keeping them beyond the holiday period. The mad hatter says: There is a place like no place on Earth. A land full of wonder, mystery, and danger! Some say to survive it you need to be as mad as a hatter food for thought perhaps! May the Lord our God, who loves us all as his children be with you and all your loved ones at this very special time. Sheila 3

Scotland has very special and unique invertebrates. Conserving important habitats, sites and endangered species is vital work. in the morning Suzanne took two workshops with classes in the village school. Elizabeth Kitchin 8
9 NewTowN BUiLDiNG for THe future on the evening of friday 2nd September a willing band of members arrived at Newtown Church, not in their Sunday best, but armed with mops, buckets, dusters, garden tools, and even wood glue! They were there to take part in this year s stewardship event which focussed on giving Time for the church. During a busy hour and a half or so many tasks were undertaken for example, windows were cleaned, pews dusted, floors mopped, spiders evicted and outside undergrowth St Boswells Church Afternoon Tea a Celebration afternoon Tea on Sunday 4th September in the Church Hall was thoroughly enjoyed by the members who attended. Cliff ellershaw (Stewardship Committee Convener) gave a short introduction, asking members to think about their financial and other commitments to the Church. an excellent afternoon tea was enjoyed and there was a good buzz of fellowship. a rolling presentation of photographs of church activities over recent years was watched with interest during the afternoon. Many thanks to the pupils of Primaries 1, 2 and 3 at Newtown and St Boswells Schools for the lovely designs which they drew for my Christmas cards, one of which is enclosed with this newsletter. As always the judges found it very difficult to choose the winners. The overall winning drawing, shown on the front of this newsletter, is by Louisa Dickson. was cleared and low hanging branches were lopped off. after their hard work, members and friends gathered for a short time of worship then they enjoyed a wellearned cuppa with home baking while trying to identify baby photos some more obvious than others! at the end of the evening, it was agreed that the event had not only provided members with an opportunity to give a little of their time to the church which had resulted in a sparkling clean building and grounds, but it had also been a very enjoyable time of fellowship which may be repeated in the future. 9 DaTa ProTeCTioN we are very grateful to the members of all our churches who helped us to comply with our responsibilities under the Data Protection act 1998 by giving their consent to the details which are held on our church membership rolls. we would also like to thank the elders who undertook the task of visiting all members. in a few isolated cases a visit may not yet have been completed. it may be that elders have been unable to get anyone in, or that members have moved to a new address. if this applies to you, please contact your Session Clerk. Session Clerks: Maxton & Mertoun: Douglas Scott Newtown: winnie Milligan St Boswells: Lucy Smith This and the other winning designs have been made into cards and distributed to the 1700 recipients of this newsletter. 10 BriGHTeN your winter and Save THe PLaNeT? yes it is possible by using the new LeD lights which are now available. They are so much more efficient than any other sort of lighting, particularly the old filament bulbs. we changed the four halogen lamps in a lighting bar and went down from 200 watts to 20 watts. They come in nice round bulbs, candles and small spots which can fit bayonet, large and small screw and pin type connectors. They also come on immediately no waiting for them to warm up. They do cost more but last so much longer you will never have to change some of them again! This means you can have one or two extra lights on and still save money, electricity and The Planet. The Council are using them in street lights so you may already have seen some as they give a white light rather than a yellow one. remember the word is LeD for light. Cliff Ellershaw after THe PariS agreement after the historic Paris agreement on climate change almost a year ago what does Scotland have to shout about? one of the big achievements can be seen on the river Don in aberdeen where an archimedes screw provides power for the grid. The huge rotating screw that thumps its way through the water is not just unusual to see, it also provides benefits to those living alongside it. it is community-owned and generates a SHoeBox appeal we are very grateful to all the people who took the time to fill a shoebox for this year s appeal and to those who transported them to the Blythswood Care van. Thanks to your generosity, a total of 59 filled shoeboxes together with a quantity of hand knitted garments and other items were donated to the appeal. profit of 30,000 a year to spend locally. Sinclair Laing, from aberdeen Community energy, said: a lot of schemes are seen to be overly commercial where only big companies and private enterprise is profiting. Seeing renewable electricity on a local scale which is returning benefits to a community turns around that perspective. The biggest reduction in Scotland s greenhouse gas emissions has come from electricity generation like the Donside Hydro. ST BOSWELLS CHURCH COFFEE MORNING Our first coffee morning for 2017 will be held on Saturday 11th February from 10.00am in the church hall. There will be cakes, books etc. Contributions will be much appreciated. 10

12 Life and Work is the maga zine of the Church of Scotland GeNeva S MySTerioUS HoLiDay Many people are unsure of why Geneva has a public holiday on a Thursday early every September. Jeûne genevois, or "Genevan fast," is a public holiday in the Swiss canton of Geneva, dating to the 16th century, observed on the Thursday following the first Sunday of September. The rev emmanuel fuchs, President of the Protestant Church in Geneva, spoke about the holiday at the world Council of Churches on September 5. Many people in Geneva do not know the meaning of the public holiday, and historians themselves have different opinions. He said the practice was widespread throughout Switzerland, but Geneva, being Geneva, kept to the day Thursday rather than a Sunday, as observed in the rest of Switzerland. fuchs spoke of Jesus dealing with a rich man and a poor man in the Bible. To find a communion with God, he said, one does not need to be rich or poor, but to know oneself, to acknowledge that one is dependent on the grace of God - and probably the richer one is, the more difficult that is. lf we rediscover the virtues of fasting, we shall perhaps be able to rediscover Jesus invitation not to seek to accumulate more things, said fuchs. even if they be spiritual experiences, he added, we should seek to declutter our lives, to seek a sort of self-emptying, of dissatisfaction, even frustration, a void that we should not try too quickly to fill in order to reassure us. (World Council of Churches) CHriSTMaS CarDS STaMPS it s nearly time to start thinking of Christmas and all it entails. Please, please remember to collect your used stamps for the Church of Scotland world Mission project which this year is to help the peoples of South india understand and appreciate that, for example, the reuse of rainwater can help in the bigger issue of caring about the impact of climate change in their land. i am very grateful to the people who give me stamps throughout the year. But as Christmas cards are sent and received please cut the stamps off the envelopes and give them to me. i will be happy to receive stamps from folk whether there are few or many it does not matter. Please do not let the number of stamps stop you as every one is most welcome. i really appreciate all your help in this. May i wish you all have a very contented and happy time over Christmas and into the New year. ann Smith, old Schoolhouse, St Boswells TD6 0ae. 14 Prayer In HIM we live and move and have our being. Acts 17:28 Paul said these words in Athens to the gathered crowds, after saying, HE is not far from us. We cannot draw breath, we can do nothing without His power sustaining us, for In HIM we live and have our being. In love GOD sent us HIS SON, WHO is a MESSAGE from His heart to our hearts. He came in fulfilment of the promise made way back in the Garden of Eden, to deal with the cause of our separation from HIM (Genesis 3:15) HE came to give us forgiveness and to teach us by example how to live and move and have our being in HIM. Every prayer that JESUS uttered on earth was for our sake. Prayer reveals the heart. JESUS reveals the heart of God the Father. Simple shepherds ( despised by others) were the first to hear the message in a burst of glory from heaven on that eastern hillside. It was also witnessed and heard by the creatures and creation around. All are affected by HIS Coming. The shepherds reaction was a heart cry, let s go and find Him! GOD S word tells us that JESUS is The ONE WHO was, and is, and is to come. (Revelation 4:8) and this is what we celebrate! This is the Gift given to all who will receive It. What is your prayer, your heart cry this Christmas? May you and your family and friends have a Blessed and Happy Christmas in celebration of HIS coming and may you know the difference HIS Presence makes in your journey and in your being in all the days ahead. Rev Winnie Munson HeeD THe warnings IN THE official magazine of the Naval Institute, Frank Koch reported on a very unusual encounter at sea. A battleship was coming in for manoeuvres in heavy weather. Shortly after the sun went down, the lookout reported a light in the distance, so the captain had the signalman send a message: We re on a collision course. Advise you change your course twenty degrees. Minutes later a signal came back: Advisable for you to change your course. The captain angrily ordered that another signal be sent: I am a captain. Change course twenty degrees. Again came the reply: I m a seaman, second class. You d better change your course. Furious by this point, the captain barked a final threat: I m a battleship! Change your course! The signal came back, I m a lighthouse. The captain changed his course! It s foolhardy to ignore the beacons that warn you of danger. They take various forms: symptons of health problems, prolonged marital conflict, rebellious children, excessive debt, soul-destroying habits, stress that ties you in knots. The list goes on. It matters not whether you are successful, influential, and busy. When God sends you a warning and tells you to change course, if you re wise you won t argue. Instead you will do it with haste. 16 in these days when we seem to face so many uncertainties, many people are wondering what the future holds and what is the way ahead. The Church of Scotland Mission and Discipleship Council has an on-going initiative called future focus: The way ahead, part of the Church without walls. at a recent Joint meeting of the Kirk Sessions in the Charge a regional Mission and Development worker, rob rawson, was invited to talk about how future focus would benefit our congregations. He explained that future focus is essentially a spiritual process in which a whole congregation engages together. it comprises a set of resources and series of exercises to help congregations to look afresh at their community, to examine their congregational life and to discern what it is that God wants them to be and to do in the next phase of their life and witness. it does this by: allowing us to be honest about our strengths and challenges. helping us to create a clear profile of our community. stimulating theological reflection. asking searching questions about our life together. helping us to discern God s calling on our congregation. delivering clear goals and plans of action for the future. it was agreed that each Kirk Session should consider and decide about going ahead with this initiative. it was important that all members of each congregation should feel included and could take part in the process.
