3 Hello from THe ManSe Dear Friends As summer time begins not thinking about the weather, but longer day light hours in the Church there is a sense of winding down for the summer as people plan holidays, well deserved time off work with school exams done (although as I write my piece for the newsletter our young people in our linked charge are in the middle of exams). Thoughts of the future have begun college, university, or getting a job. It is a time of change and even in the church things are changing. On Sunday 8th May, after the May elections, churches the breadth and depth of the country took part in a census. Every person who worshipped in a church, both young and old, was counted and the results, I am sure, will be interesting. But there are also other interesting changes taking place. May saw the publication by St Andrews Press of a new book, The Invisible Church, by Steve Aisthorpe, the new Mission Development Worker for the Church of Scotland. I sent away for a copy, but the demand for the book is such that they are temporarily out of stock! In the book he asks the questions: Are you concerned for the health of the Church? Discouraged by the decline of many congregations? A Christian, but not a Church-goer? Steve sets out to explore why, and talks of the changes in our society, what it means to be a Christian and what Church is to many. Elaine Duncan of the Scottish Bible Society, having reviewed the book, is quoted as saying that he makes a very valuable contribution to our understanding of the growing number of Christians who are active in mission, but not part of local congregations. On Facebook, one of my friends shared the online Life and Work newsfeed about a new online congregation aiming to build an entirely new congregation based around an online community. It is being trialled and developed by a former moderator someone we have met in our Charge Rt Rev Albert Bogle who led our Keswick in the Borders conference in Building on the success of the Sanctuary First website and app, he is quoted as saying: We re looking to move Sanctuary First from its present identity as a devotional website, and see if it could become a bona fide congregation of the Church of Scotland online and offline worshipping. He goes on to say: I ll be working with present members to help model such a pilot congregation, and through worship, mission and pastoral care research and model how it might look. So the Church, by the end of the 21st Century may not look like the traditional Church we know now, but its work, like all aspects of life, develops and changes as technology moves us forward. 9 recent events in our CHUrCHeS EASTER 2016 easter morning 2016 was the start of British Summer time. not only did intrepid worshippers at the 7.30am service at dryburgh abbey lose an hour's sleep (in addition perhaps, to having risen earlier than normal!), but they coped with truly British summer weather! Umbrellas to the fore, led by St Boswells Silver Band, worshippers sang the easter morning hymns with gusto. worship was conducted by rev Sheila Moir and Mrs rachel wilson, our candidate for ministry. But the sun did come out, if only briefly and umbrellas were closed! The best breakfast of the year was served in St Boswells Church Hall - when did a bacon and egg roll taste better? easter celebrations continued in all churches in the Charge, again led by rev Sheila and rachel. decorated eggs and easter Bonnets were judged. The offering at dryburgh and profit from the easter breakfast amounted to 93 which was donated to The Samaritans. a SUCCeSSfUl ConCerT on friday 22nd april the fundraising Committee held a very successful concert in St. Boswells Church, raising 466 for Church funds. The lauderdale Community Choir under the direction of James robertson, with Keyboard played by Claire Brennan and Cellist Claire davis, entertained with beautiful arrangements, some familiar and a few new to the audience. The choir were treated to refreshments in the Church Hall after their excellent performance. 10 Prayer And the angel said to me, O Daniel you greatly beloved man... then he said to me, Fear not Daniel, for from the first day that you set your mind and heart to understand and humble yourself before your GOD, your words were heard, and I have come as a consequence and in response to your words. Daniel 10: We know that we are loved by GOD. We know this side of Calvary because of Christ s passion and obedience for our sake. Our response in faith to that mystery of loved is what matters. In the above quote, Daniel is told by the angel that he is greatly loved by GOD. What was it about him that caused him to hear those wonderful words? Like you and me he was an ordinary human being. He made a choice to honour his GOD day by day, wherever he was. He did not change that choice according to circumstances, or convenience or inconvenience, or ridicule or threats. When it came to a death threat, he let it be by his actions that for him there was only one GOD and that he would honour HIM. In that alien land, where he was a captive, he continued to pray before an open window three times a day at the hours of prayer for him as a Jew, and that he would not bow down to an idol. He was no self righteous Pharisee praying on a street corner merely to be seen by others. It was not a sudden 'one off' decision. It had been and was his constant choice and habit since childhood. Being captive in a strange land did not change his love for his GOD. But it was costly. The death threat was real. Many people and places in our world today are hostile to Christianity. We can expect this trend to increase. JESUS said that this would be the case before His return. Bur He also said in love to all those who follow HIM, 'I am with you always, even to the end of the world.' HE sees and looks upon the heart and the actions which reveal it. Rev Winnie Munson 2016 THe year of listening listening has become one of society s buzz words: we are told to listen to children, to listen to our friends, relatives and colleagues. But what are we really being asked to do? anne Goldie from Crossreach Counselling at the Tom allan Centre in Glasgow gives us some ideas of what we can do to become better at listening. active listening means that we listen with all of our senses and not just our ears. it means that we pay attention to every thing about the other person, not just what they say, and it means we also pay attention to ourselves and the effect the person is having on us. it is, in fact, a tall order. active listening involves stopping anything else we are doing and giving the person who wants to talk all of our attention. we need to check that we have time and space to stop and listen and we need to be honest if we don t. People appreciate someone caring enough to make time for them. continued on next page 10

11 THE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND WORLD MISSION COUNCIL The world Mission of the Church of Scotland would like to thank everybody who helped the raise 3511 from the sales of stamps people collected for them. This year s stamp project is for the Church of Scotland's partner church in South india who are very involved in environmental issues and green theology. The Church of South india have recently opened the othara eco-spirituality Centre near Thirnalla in Kerala. The stamp project will support some of the church's ecological innovations including the harvesting and reuse of rainwater and establishing the use of a biogas plant to power kitchens and the development of a small dairy and chicken farm for native breeds. The Church of South india wishes to encourage people, through retreats and conferences at the centre, to appreciate and understand that caring for the earth is not just a calling but a lifestyle. let's hope a great many stamps are collected for this very worthwhile project helping the peoples of South india to learn about the impact of climate change and how they can become good stewards of their land. Ann Smith we need to look at the person who wants to talk are they upset, do they appear happy? The same as usual? do they look the way we would expect in whatever situation they are in? what is their tone like? flat? anxious? excited? only now do we need to listen with our ears. we don t need to respond with words, but we do need to let the person know our eyes, ears and hearts are open to them. we can do this by leaning forward in our chair, by holding eye contact and most of all by not interrupting. when we do speak it is helpful just to tell the person a little of what you have heard from them. active listening does not involve giving advice, at least until we are very sure that the other would welcome it. often all people need is someone to care enough to try and understand. Taken from CROSSREACH NEWS ISSUE Life and Work is the maga zine of the Church of Scotland farming MiniSTer The Church of Scotland is appointing its first ever dedicated farming minister to help support people in the hard-pressed agricultural industry. Moderator of the General assembly, the rev dr angus Morrison, unveiled the innovative and creative Pioneer Ministry post during a visit to ayr Presbytery in March. dr Morrison said: it is hoped that through this new position, the Church can meet farmers where they are and build relationships that will allow an understanding of the issues and stresses related to modern day farming. 11

14 NEWTOWN CHURCH BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE newtown s Stewardship focus this year will be on Time and how, as members, we can support the church by giving a little of our time. we know that people give their time in lots of ways for instance, as members of the Kirk Session, by arranging flowers for Sunday services, by delivering church newsletters, helping at fund raising events, helping to maintain the church building and grounds. To celebrate this and to give members an opportunity to renew their commitment of time to the church, we are planning a special event on Friday 2nd September, from 6.30 p.m. further details will be issued nearer the time, but please keep that date free in your diary so that you can come along. NEWTOWN NEWS A Warm Welcome after saying goodbye to awdri doyle as our organist, the congregation at newtown was pleased to welcome Jamie McKenzie, who began playing at newtown in March. Jamie is organist at Kelso north Parish Church where he is also choirmaster, so we are very fortunate that he has agreed to play at newtown as well. Jamie s wonderful music, his singing and his enthusiasm are a delight. MERTOUN KIRK 775 YEARS did you know that Mertoun Kirk is 775 years old? The last time the Kirk celebrated was on 17th november 1991, 25 years ago, when the then Minister rev Glyn Taverner led worship and a service of thanksgiving based on the order that was used by david de Bernham, Bishop of St andrews when he dedicated the Kirk in as part of our Stewardship campaign 14 Building up Strength a special service of rededication with the Sacrament of Holy Communion will be held on Sunday 2nd October as Maxton & Mertoun Churches have new crosses and have recently been carpeted by Chrysties of Hawick. Mertoun will shortly have a new pulpit fall which is being made by members. elders will be visiting with invitations to this special service which will also be an opportunity for members to rededicate themselves.

15 Borders Street Pastors Borders Street Pastors is a registered Scottish Charity no: SCo46473 Street Pastors are trained Christians who go out in teams of three or four on the streets on a Saturday night from about 11pm 4am to listen, Care and Help. Street Pastors brings a calming effect which influences people's behaviour, and the practical help they give is appreciated by everyone involved with the night time economy. whenever Street Pastors operate, street crime reduces. Borders Street Pastors is the 23rd initiative in Scotland and one of around 280 in the UK. we launched on 21st March 2016 at Scottish Borders Council HQ. you may have noticed this event in the local media. Since then we have been busy recruiting and interviewing potential Street Pastors. our first training session was held in april and we intend to have two further sessions by the beginning of June. 11 June will see our Commissioning Service in Galashiels and our first night on the streets. we are also recruiting in Hawick and hope to be operating there soon as well. in addition, we are also looking for Prayer Pastors. Prayer Pastors don't go on to the streets but will be at the base and will pray for situations on the streets as they occur. Prayer support from Borders Christians is essential and your prayers will be appreciated by all involved. each team is only asked to go out once a month. we also believe that there may be opportunities to support other communities in the Borders during events like the Common ridings and rugby Sevens. if this is something that you may be interested in, please contact duncan Cameron on or by borders@streetpastors.org.uk Duncan Cameron Coordinator, Borders Street Pastors. 15 Save our BUGS invertebrates (bugs) provide a number of important 'ecological services'. These services are often overlooked until they are damaged or lost. They are usually impossible to replace. one example is crop pollination. insects are responsible for the pollination of a variety of crops in Scotland. The most significant is the soft fruit industry with the raspberry crop in Scotland worth 52 million annually. The blackcurrant crop is valued at 8 million; however, the associated processing industry is worth an additional 200 million. from a talk by Buglife at the agm of eco- Congregation Scotland in april. see MiSSion & outreach This group, a sub-committee of St Boswells Kirk Session, has been looking at initiatives being promoted by the Church of Scotland and interdenominational groups, like Grasping the nettle. These involve helping churches which might feel they have lost focus, considering the public understanding of science and faith and equipping members to build Christian communities wherever they are. There has been discussion about how to spread information about these initiatives to a wider audience. There are also initiatives such as fresh expressions where examples are given such as: Three Christian women in a village loved cooking. They invited teenagers to learn how to cook and then eat what they d made. as they ate together they talked about their lives, and when it seemed natural the women shared what their Christian faith meant to them. There is more about these initiatives in the Church of Scotland website.
