Page - 8 Recipe Box Church Facility Update Upcoming Events A p r i l C h r o n i c l e r A Message from Pastor Picard Dear Friends at Our Savior: I was asked if I might like to write a few lines for your monthly newsletter, in particular as a way to introduce myself to you and give you a little information about myself. While I consider the topic of 'me' a pretty boring tale, I can tell you a few things. I am originally from Wisconsin. While at the seminary in St. Louis, I met my wife-to-be, Stacy DeBoef, who is sister-in-law to a gentleman, who was a classmate of mine. Stacy is from What Cheer, Iowa and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Knoxville while she was attending Central College in Pella. After being married in 1997, we moved to Alva, Oklahoma, where I was ordained and installed into my first pastorate (5 years). While in Oklahoma, we were blessed with two daughters (Hannah; b and Sophia; b. 2000). In 2002 I accepted a call to Trinity in Knoxville. Here we have been blessed with three sons (Peter; b. 2002, Henry; b and Isaiah; b. 2007). My hobbies include - trying to keep up with my children. We've home schooled all five of our children, mostly for the reason that we just wanted to spend as much time as we could with our kids before they're grown and gone. Some days my wife thinks she's done enough time. But, predictably, they do grow up, and our eldest, Hannah, is planning to attend Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan this fall. Our children are all swimmers. Their parents are also to a lesser degree. If you have the chance to meet my youngest son, Isaiah, you will note that he has a wheel-chair that he uses for mobility. Isaiah was born with spina bifida, a birth defect which has compelled him to deal with a few obstacles in life that are not common to us all. I just thought I'd tell you up front because people don't know sometimes what to ask, or what's a sensitive spot when they see a 10-year old in a wheelchair. I don't tell you about Isaiah to arouse pity. He's sharp. He's got buckets of personality and is, kind of my hero. It's a weird situation to have your son as your hero. Isaiah has been such a good thing for me. He's taught me a tremendous amount that has really helped me in my vocation. (Just imagine how bad I was at it before!j) I have come to the realization, through the years, through Isaiah, through all sorts of people, that in the end we're all just pilgrims traveling through this world, and that nothing matters so much as that we simply help one another over the terrain. So, that's what I'm here for until our Lord picks out or sends Our Savior its next resident pastor. Call me. Let me know what I can do. If I can help, I will. If I can't, I'll pray for you...or send you to Pastor Brandt. (He actually knows what he's doing). I look forward to the time that we will get to spend together. As I always tell my children - what matters is - other people. I also tell them to pick up their rooms, but they don't do that so well. You can't win 'em all. Pastor Picard

3 February j Our Mission: to empower communities for positive change through Christian care and learning Pastor Leadership Seminar Parent Education Training VBS for Kids Samaritan Purse s project During February, St. John Church in Ellisville, Missouri, our cornerstone church combined with St. John s Lutheran Church & School in Midland, Michigan brought a team of 16 volunteers to Cambodia for a 10- day mission trip. During their first day in Phnom Penh, Pastor Dion Garrett and Pastor Dan Kempin led a leadership seminar for fifty Christian Cambodian pastors ministering to their hearts, minds, and spirits. During their time at Stronghold Cambodia, the team rotated through teaching English and computers technics, preparing student lunches, maintaining SHC facility, and painting mural artwork. Members of the team helped SHC distribute Samaritan s Purse Operation Christmas Child Boxes to children in a local village and hosted a youth conference for over 120 youths from our local partners to learn about the Godly meaning of Valentine s Day, following a soccer match. They conducted a parent education seminar and with the help of Diane and Naomi, discussed dental health, hand washing hygiene, emergency care for choking, and instruction for home use of ceramic water filters which they purchased for 70 families assuring the families of safe, clean drinking water. They conducted VBS for 110 SHC students and neighborhood children who they led through Bible lessons, games, crafts and singing. Throughout the week Dr. Mike Frith and his dental team examined 52 children and adults, preforming 41 fillings and numerous extractions. Beginning each appointment with prayer in both English and Khmer, assured everyone that God was in charge and His miraculous grace prevailed which was evident as there were no complications and the children were calm and cooperative. Pastor Dion and Pastor Dan also led the confirmation service for Jesse and Naomi s oldest son, David and first communion for their son, Solomon. The team also had the opportunity to join SHC staff and other local missionaries in an International Fellowship worship service with Pastor Dion Garrett delivering the message. Their time in Cambodia ended with a day trip tour of some local islands through the choppy waters of the Gulf of Thailand, where they experienced the need for trust and dependence on God just like Peter, John, and James. The team kept busy doing the Lord s work during their trip making a big difference for Stronghold students, their families, and their neighbors. All this was done with a positive Christian attitude making a huge impact on those they served. Yes, the team went back to the US tired and ready to rest during their thirty-hour return trip. But, they left as changed people with long-lasting memories of the Cambodian people. God has a way of impacting not only the people being served, but also leaving a strong impression on those who are serving. SHC asks you to prayerfully consider partnering with us to make an impact on Cambodia children and parents by sending your short term mission trip to Cambodia. Please prayerfully consider financially supporting the Lord s mission work through Stronghold Cambodia above and beyond your current giving commitment to your local church. Registration begins at 9:00 A.M., and lunch is $5.00. Speakers for the day are LuAnn Perkins and Melanie Maddick, they will be sharing their experiences from their Mission trip to Kenya. We have been privileged to support this family s mission through our prayer and monetary contributions. We now have an in person opportunity to learn more about that mission and to offer personal encouragement. 6 Busy, Caring Hands Bring Blessings On Sunday, March 26, Quilts, Fabric Kits, Baby Care Kits, Shorts and Dresses were dedicated to the glory of God, that these Gifts of Love may be a blessing to all who receive them. Many caring people were involved in making and providing items for these Gifts of Love, and we praise God, the Father of compassion and comfort, that you have shared His love for you, by sharing it with the needy in the world. Recipients of these Gifts of Love are, Lutheran World Relief, Orphan Grain Train, The Pregnancy of Central Iowa, Salvation Army and Clearview Recovery Center. A Sincere THANK YOU for sharing the love of God thru these gifts, which will provide warmth, shelter, clothing and hope for the needy of the world. LWML Faith Society April 6

8 N o v e m b e r A p r i l "THE RECIPE "BOX" EASY MICROWAVE CARAMELS From Pat Shelton Ingredients: 1 c. sweet butter 2 1/3 c. (1 lb.) brown sugar (firmly packed) 1 c. light corn syrup 1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk 1/8 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla 1/2 c. chopped walnuts (optional) Directions: 1. In a 2 qt. microwave safe pitcher, combine butter, sugar, syrup, milk & salt. 2. Microwave on high (100% power) 3-4 minutes or until mixture reaches 245 (firm-ball stage). No stirring is needed. 3. Remove from microwave; stir in vanilla and walnuts. Allow to stand for 10 minutes, stirring well several times. Pour into a buttered 9x13" pan or 7x11" (thicker candy). 4. Refrigerate until cool. Invert pan. Carefully top out whole block of candy; cut in squares. Wrap in wax paper and store in refrigerator. (Can also be frozen.) We'd love to have your recipe! UPDATED Church Facility Guidelines Please contact the church secretary when wanting to use the church facilities. Let her know the date, time, what rooms you will need to reserve for your event and if you will be using the kitchen. There is no fee for using the facilities. A member of the church must be present when the facility is being used. Setting Up and Cleaning Up Please vacuum all the areas that you use and remove all garbage to the custodial room. Return all tables and chairs to the way they were when you set up for your event. If you use more tables and chairs than what originally set up, please return them to the racks in the storage area. Respect of Church Facilities The member of the church using the facilities should help remind their guests of proper decorum. Children are not to run and play in the church proper.
