3 A Kingdom Torn in Two July 14, 2013 PONDERING THE STORY Chapter 14, A Kingdom Torn in Two (pp ) After starting life so strong, being gifted with more wisdom than any other man, and building a spectacular Temple for the dwelling of the Lord, Solomon s life ended poorly. His heart was divided: His love for his foreign wives caused him to serve foreign gods. Thus at Solomon s death, the Kingdom of Israel was torn in two: Solomon s son Rehoboam stubbornly listened to his contemporaries and ignored the wisdom of Solomon s older advisors. Instead of lightening the load of the people and endearing himself to them, Rehoboam became an even heavier task master. This was just the opportunity Jeroboam needed to convince the northern 10 tribes of Israel to rebel, anoint him king and follow him. He even gave them their own gods, two golden calves, to worship in their own territory. The difficult details of the Lower Story may seem too much for God work through but God uses Judah s weakness to demonstrate his own power and promises as He keeps working the pper Story plan of salvation with future son of David who would be anointed by God to rescue all the world. Next week read chapter 15, God s Messengers, (pp ) PRE-SERVICE MSIC Come, Now is the Time to Worship Here is Our King WELCOME AND ANNONCEMENTS INVOCATION P In frustration, discouragement and disillusionment, Solomon proclaimed at the end of his life: I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my labor, and this was the reward for all my toil. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 2:10-11) Finally, at the end of Ecclesiastes Solomon concludes: Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14) 3

4 We come to the Lord confessing our failure, brokenness and sin, seeking the deliverance only the Anointed Son of David is able to provide. PSALM 119:1-16 Beth How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Praise be to you, Lord; teach me your decrees. With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. A READING of THE STORY from GOD S HOLY WORD When all the Israelites heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the house of David. When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he mustered all Judah and the tribe of Benjamin a hundred and eighty thousand able young men to go to war against Israel and to regain the kingdom for Rehoboam son of Solomon. But this word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God: Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, to all Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, This is what the Lord says: Do not go up to fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Go home, every one of you, for this is my doing. Jeroboam thought to himself, The kingdom will now likely revert to the house of David. If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem, they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam. After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt. One he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan. And this thing became a sin; the people came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other. Jeroboam built shrines on high places and appointed priests from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites. He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the festival held in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made. And at Bethel he also installed priests at the high places he had made. (1 Kings 12:20-24, 26-32) SONG 4 One Thing Remains

P It was with joy on the night that Jesus was betrayed that he gathered with his friends to celebrate the Passover meal. Jesus knew his time with them was coming to an end, and he wanted to leave a gift that they would remember him by. Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it and gave it to his disciples saying Take eat, this is my body, which is given for you for the forgiveness of all of your sins. Do this in remembrance of me. Jesus took the cup as well and blessed it and gave it to the disciples and said, Drink of it all of you, this is my blood of the new covenant, shed for you for the forgiveness of all of your sins. Every time you drink this cup remember me. C We come to your table Lord to receive you through the gifts of bread and wine. Come Lord Jesus! and teach us to pray THE LORD S PRAYER THE INVITATION P The table is prepared, the feast is ready, and Jesus is here. Come receive in faith the gifts he gives. C Thank you Jesus, for your invitation. We come to your table to receive from you your precious gifts. Amen. RAISE THE ROOF FND DRIVE OSL is replacing the church s roof and you ve asked How can I help?! Voter s agreed to use Foundation funds to get the $28,000 project started, with the intention to replenish the Foundation balance via a special fund drive. Prayerfully consider making a special contribution, designated as New OSL Roof and place in the offering plate. Watch for periodic updates as OSL Raises the Roof! Questions can be directed to any Trustee or to Ron Dlouhy. VBS 2013 Kingdom Rock is coming to share the message with all our young participants of how God makes us strong on JLY 29 - AG. 2, FROM 9-11AM EACH DAY. We ve scheduled another swim party for all of our VBS participants, their families and members of Our Savior. This is being planned for Thursday, Aug. 1st from 5:15-7:15pm and we d love to have you join us, even if you don t plan to swim. JOIN S TONIGHT FOR AN ICE CREAM SOCIAL AT 6:30PM OR SAVIOR! We will be collecting Free Will Donations with the proceeds going to help off-set the costs of VBS.
