1 RaleighKnights Official Publication Of Fr. Thomas Price Council 2546 April, 2010 Volume 13 Issue 10 Special points of interest: With all that is going on at our Council about retention, the Columbus Club, next years officers and directors elections and all else that keeps our Council going, it is imperative for all Council 2546 Brother Knights in good standing to make a commitment to attend business and Columbus Club meetings! Inside this issue: Officers/Directors 2 The Sun Came Out...The Parade Marched On Well, the luck of the Irish and the Good Lord shined upon us, as just prior to the Raleigh St Patrick s Day Parade, the clouds that threatened all morning gave way to the sun and made for what turned out to be one of the best attended parades. Scores of parade onlookers crowded every street and could be heard for blocks cheering as our Knights of Columbus float passed by with kids and adults alike passing out Tootsie Rolls and connecting with the crowd. CHARITY UNITY FRATERNITY PATRIOTISM It gladdens me always at how much the people in our city really connect with The Knights and are aware of all we stand for and what we do. This year especially I heard more, God bless the Knights and keep up the work and thanks for all you do than in all the years past. Many thanks go out to all who participated and marched. As always there were some long time regulars and it was good to see some new faces as well. You all know who you are and your Council appreciates all you help. There is one family that does need to be thanked personally and that is the great folks that make and tow our float. Sam and his son Mark are too just wonderful for words! They are so accommodating and thoughtful, they even bring along a step stool so people can climb up onto the float. In all, it was a great day for the Irish, a great day for all, a great day for Raleigh and an even greater day for The Knights of Columbus. The retention committee cannot do this alone and needs our help. If you have brought someone into the Council, please make every effort to ensure that this member stays active. Like with anything else new, members can be a little overwhelmed with all we do. Be a good sponsor, help these new Brother Knights along on their journey. And most importantly, if you know someone else who has not been around in a while, give them call and invite them back to the Council. Now, more than ever we need some good men to help us move forward with all the good deeds we do. Become a better Knight of Columbus by helping someone else become a better Knight too!

3 Grand Knights Report Brothers All, The Lenten season is upon us and that means Fish Fries. We have experienced a wonderful turnout so far this year, which is bringing in much needed funds to the Council. On that point, roughly half of our Council has not paid their dues. If you have not paid your dues for the year, please do so at your earliest convenience. If you are experiencing financial difficulties, please let me know. We can work with you to bring you current or to defer your dues until your finances recover. I would like to thank Tim Kilpatrick for coordinating another memorable Art Auction. The weather was not especially cooperative, but we managed to work around that and raise a substantial amount of money for the Cathedral School. I would also like to thank Tom and Lisa Dunham our Family of the Month for once again preparing an excellent assortment of tasty appetizers. The buffet alone was worth the price of admission. Ray Tremblay was our Knight of the Month. He conceived, organized and prepared our Valentine Day Dinner Dance as a fundraiser for the Columbus Club. I would also like to recognize John Murphy, Chris Weir, Richard Ferraro, and Dave Anderson among others who assisted Ray with the planning and preparing of the event. I was an absolutely fantastic evening and enjoyed by all. We also participated in the Traveling Gravel and Supreme s Food for Families Program this past month. The Grand Knight and his Deputy Grand Knight from the Wake Forest council were kind enough to attend our business meeting and bestow the gravel to our Council; and on February 10 th, several past Grand Knights and I had the honor presenting the gavel to the council at St. Eugene s in Wendell. As for the Food for Families Program, we were able to collect two cases of canned goods during the drive, and those cases were donated to Catholic Parish Outreach. Thank you to all who were kind enough to donate food. Lastly, the Columbus Club presented notice to the Council in early February that they needed to raise our rent temporarily to $700 per month for the final 6 months of the fiscal year. We advanced the current year s budgeted rent to them upon receipt of that notice, but we need to amend our budget to account for this increase. A motion was made and tabled at the last business meeting to amend the current budget by increasing the rental expense line item by $2100. We will vote on this motion at our April business meeting. This motion would create an unfunded expense in our current year s budget. Our plan to balance the budget for the current fiscal year is to defer the Art Auction donation to Cathedral School until August, when one of our CD s matures. Finally, there was a motion made and passed at the last Columbus Club meeting terminating the rent increase at the end of the calendar year. We will need to account for that six-month increase in preparing next year s budget. VIVAT JESUS, Dave Bayard Grand Knight (Home/Cell) bayardpllc@yahoo.com Under Good of The Order: Knight of Month: Ray Tremblay Family of the Month: Tom & Lisa Dunham First Degree Honoree: Msgr. Thomas Hadden 50/50, Ken Maldonado donated $24 winnings to the Seminarian Fund. RBC Fund raising, going well, looking for volunteers for March openings. Clothing available with Council Logo, Jacket, Shirts, Hats, see article in newsletter, Contact Joe Ryan. Please pray for those who are sick: Deacon Steve and his son Mark, Ed Rogosich sister in law, Jeanette, Jim McGowan s son David, Ken Maldonado s wife, Bro. Bill Scott, Brother Bill Keely. Please pray for those who have died: All of the Unborn. Pray for all our Armed Forces Personnel. Those who have lost their jobs, for our leaders and all of our Priests. Faithfully submitted by Brother Joe Ryan, Recorder

5 Huge Garage, Yard, and Garden Sale May 8th Brothers are you constantly moving things around in your garage or attic that you never use? Does your wife want to spring clean and get rid of those things that are always in the way? Do you have yard tools that are no longer used? Bicycles that are growing spider webs? Furniture that takes up space and has no sentimental value? Clothes that no longer fit? Microwaves, vacuums, bookshelves, glassware, pictures, plants, books, TV's, stereos, windows, doors, screens or floor mats? If so, have we got a deal for you. Donate it to the Columbus Club and we will have a fundraising event that will be fun for all. So start thinking about it now and we will let you know more as time gets closer. Our goal is to make this a family fun day, with children and grandchildren playing on the grounds and parents having a good time as well. We hope to sell as much as possible but remaining items will be donated to another non-profit. We plan to have hamburgers and hot dogs for sale. We are a family oriented organization and it will be great to have as many families involved as possible. We 'we'll need some volunteers but everybody will be able to be with their family most of the time if we can rotate some volunteer time. Have you tried and failed? How many times do you try to get something done, but it doesn t seem to work? Well how about Norm Larsen? He was given a job to do, come up with a rust protective, corrosive resistant solvent when applied to metal surfaces. This was needed to protect Atlas Missiles. Did he give up after a dozen, or two attempts? NOPE He kept modifying the solvent until he came up with a formula to displace water with the protective solvent. He called it Water Displacement Formula Fortieth attempt (yea we know it as WD-40) Don t we have this problem as well? How many times do we get frustrated by the continual efforts to get something done and hit a brick wall? Often this is due to the apparent lack of support with our brother knights. We ask and ask, but no response or help. Maybe we are doing it wrong. When is the last time that you just called a brother knight to say HEY. How are things going?...without asking for something. This will make a big difference. You show that there is no condition associated with the fraternal contact; you might get that brother knight to rethink his involvement in the council and begin contributing. Call that man you sponsored and haven t seen in a while! Make a difference. Get that man back and join you in your activities. So where am I? Back in 1966 this 18 year old boy, became a knight, graduated high school, started college (remember Charles Whitman at the University of Texas? I was there in class when he was shooting). As a knight (and soon a third degree member) I learned a lot of interesting things that are different than today, among them you had no traveling card, you had to know the password, and only the financial secretary can give you that. During the first few years, my dad enrolled me on the second and third degree teams. Worked two State Conventions, and became an outside guard of the council. After graduation, I moved to San Antonio (still with my membership in Austin), but still didn t really learn much about what the knights were all about (other than grey-haired, played poker, and drank beer!) I grew older, got married, had a child, and thought I was content. This was all to change when I took a job in North Carolina! Brother Gouldie will return again next month with another installment.

6 RBC Center Volunteer Update The volunteering for the RBC Center, for the most part is going very well. We have worked several events and all have gone well. A very special thank you to the guys who have helped us get this endeavor headed in the right direction. The group leaders : Joe Ryan, Ray Tremblay, Ed Rogosich and Jerry Santoro THANK YOU GUYS!! (More Are Needed) The volunteers who have been there to make our presence strong and work with the group leaders and learn the system at the RBC Center: Matt Leonhard, Mark Palko, Bob Kearney, Frank Kirsch, Big Ed Bartoszewski, Kristen Tremblay, Don Dubois, and all those helping in the future. THANK YOU GUYS & GIRLS!! (More Are Needed) It truly is a commitment of time on your part to help, and any effort is greatly appreciated in making this successful. This opportunity has the proven potential to grow into bigger and better events and better carts (Beer Carts instead of Dippin' Dots and Pretzels), that will contribute increasing amounts of money to our council for our efforts. We are just getting our foot in the door at the RBC Center and our efforts have not gone un-noticed there. Thank you again to all who have contributed so far, and to those who will help in the future. Each one of us, if we have black rubber sole shoes, black pants, and a white shirt can contribute perhaps a few times a year to guarantee our continued and future success, and have a little fun at the same time. Daniel Danford Chancellor ( , dndanford@hotmail.com) RBC Center Volunteer Coordinator The next couple of months we will be nominating Officers for next year. We will also be looking to fill some directors positions. Now is the time for all Knights to attend meetings and get involved in the process. Our Council depends on its Officers and Directors to ensure we remain an active and vibrant Council. Please consider filling one of these positions, or at least attend meetings so you may better understand the workings of our Order. A well informed Knight is one of our most valuable assets. We especially encourage all new members to get and stay more involved, why else would you have joined? Thank you Cathedral School Children Host a Bake Sale for Haiti Children from Sacred Heart Cathedral School hosted a bake sale during Father Price Council Fish Fry on Friday February 26, Second Graders Shelby Dittman, Jordan Isley and Sinead Beausang, along with kindergartner Genevieve Beausang offered fresh baked cookies, cakes and desserts for fish fry patrons to enjoy. Donations were voluntary and the girls collected $180 for the Cathedral School Haiti Relief fund. The girls have been hosting an annual bake sale since the older girls were in kindergarten, and the event has become something of a Father Price Council Lenten Fish Fry tradition. Spring is here and you know what that means...no, not the birds and the bees! Grass needs cutting, leaves need raking...yard WORK!!!!!!! We could use about 4 grass cutting teams, consisting of 3-4 Brother Knights each. You would get to ride the big mower, bag trash and help keep our Council grounds looking good and presentable. Each team would rotate, so as not to wear anybody out...we re talking a couple of hours a month here! Please contact Tom or tmonck@bellsouth.net
