1 Raleigh Knights Official Publication of Fr. Thomas Price Council 2546 Volume 10 Issue 20 April 2008 Grotto Dedication & Blessing Completes Dream On a seasonally cool day, members of the Knights of Columbus, their families and their friends took part in the dedication ceremony and blessing of our beloved Grotto. Monsignor Jerry Sherba led the blessing, with Monsignor Thomas Hadden saying some inspirational words about Father P.B. Edelen to whom the Grotto was dedicated. Immediately following the blessing and dedication, our very own Chaplain, Deacon Steve Lewendowski, led the100 or more people attending the ceremony in praying the Rosary. As you all know, the Grotto was the dream of Brother Ken Growney, who 1st introduced the idea to the council in the fall of After Ken became ill and passed away, that dream was carried out and came to life through donations of money, time and talent from countless members and non members alike. Ken had stated that the Grotto be dedicated to Fr. P.B. Edelen. Fr. Edelen was a U.S. Army Chaplain who was killed in action while administering his priestly duties to soldiers on the beaches of Normandy on June 9-10, Fr. Edelen was the only Catholic priest from North Carolina to die in in action in WW II. Fr. Edelen was a member of Council 2546 and his father, Philip Edelen was Grand Knight of our council as well. Much can be said as to all of the talent of the all the people who worked on erecting the Grotto and landscaping and the love and support from all those who donated their time, ideas and money. The list of supporters is tremendous, from those who labored to those who donated funds to the actual structure or donated money for a commemorative brick and we thank you all. 3 3 Grand Knight s Report for April Wow, we had a great group in attendance at the Blessing and Dedication of the Grotto of our Blessed Mother Mary. A special thank you to Msgr. Jerry Sherba and Msgr. Thomas Hadden for blessing of the Grotto, Deacon Steven Lewandowski did a wonderful job with the rosary to complete the blessing of the grotto. Thank you Jerry Ryan and all who helped make it happen. I believe Brother Ken is happy with the results, the Grotto is absolutely beautiful. He believed our council grounds should have something to show outsiders that we are a Catholic Organization and also thought that we should dedicate it to Father Phillip B. Edelen S.J. [Jesuit Priest] whom was the only Priest to die on the shores of Normandy while giving last rites to a fallen solder. Who was also the son of a Past Grand Knight of our council! I hope to have a section added to the website to give more details about Fr. Edelen for all to read. The St. Patrick s dinner and dance was very well attended, the room was packed. An impassioned drama about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed storage attic, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK captures the claustrophobic realities of their daily existence their fear, their hope, their laughter, their grief. Each day of these two dark years, Anne's voice shines through: "When I write I shake off all my cares. But I want to achieve more than that. I want to be useful and bring enjoyment to all people, even those I've never met. I want to go on living even after my death." This is a new adaptation for a new generation. Just go to and under community, click on fundraising. Next click on register MVP card, click on select organization, select the state city and then scroll and select LAMB Foundation Council 2546, then add your MVP card. It s just that easy. A portion of your sale will go directly to our council s fund raiser and we receive checks every quarter. This runs Jan. 1 through Dec. 31 and you need to re-register every year. Church: This years fund raiser to support St. Joseph s Church will be a good ole fashioned pig pic n instead of the annual spaghetti dinner. The date is Saturday, May 24th at 2:00 PM held on our Council grounds. This will be a Church/Family type event as we will have some games and attractions for the kids as we sell barbeque plates. All proceeds will be donated to St. Joseph s. St. Joseph s is rebuilding their church and if you have not been there in a while, you owe it to yourself to pay a visit and see the wonderful work they are doing. Please contact Tim Kilpatrick; tim1002@earthlink.net, (919) or Rich Ferraro; rich0317kofc@bellsouth.net, to find out how you can help with the days activities. Columbus Club: As you read in last months newsletter, the no smoking in the building will start April 1st. One of our next projects will be repairing and patching the parking lot. With spring just around the corner, we will be having a spring cleaning day on Saturday, April 19th, the weekend before the chicken barbeque and the State Softball Tournament. The Council grounds clean up always goes quicker when we have a lot of members out here helping. Remember, this is your Columbus Club and we all need to help maintain it and not just for ourselves, but for possible clients who may wish to rent our facilities.

9 9 The Grotto for Our Lady of Lourdes is located on the property of the Knights of Columbus, Father Thomas Price Council 2546, at 4301 Columbus Club Dr., Raleigh NC. The dedication of the Grotto took place on Sunday Feb. 24, at 4:00 PM. Monsignor Jerry Sherba, from Sacred Heart Cathedral in Raleigh, along with Msgr. Thomas Hadden and Deacon Steve Lewendowski blessed the statues of Our Lady of Lourdes and Bernadette and dedicated the Grotto. Our Lady of Lourdes first appeared to Bernadette 150 years ago on February 11, 1858 in Lourdes, France. The idea for building the Grotto began in late 2006 when Ken Growney, a member of Father Thomas Price Council suggested it to the membership. His intentions were two-fold. The first was to honor Mary, the Mother of Jesus, who is very important to the Knights of Columbus. Ken s second intention was to dedicate the Grotto to Father P. B. Edelen, Chaplain, U.S Army Chaplain Edelen landed on the shores of Normandy June 6 th 1944 dispensing his priestly services to the dead and dying on the beaches of Normandy. On June 9 th Chaplain Edelen was struck by shellfire and died the following day. Father Edelen was from North Carolina and was the only priest from North Carolina to die in WWII. In May 2007, Ken Growney passed away but his efforts to build the Grotto continued. Donations began coming in from over one hundred people and organizations, Catholics and non-catholics alike. Ken was a member of two Catholic fraternal organizations, the Knights of Columbus, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians (Catholic men of Irish heritage). Both organizations contributed mightily to the effort by donating time, talent, money and material. Almost all work on the Grotto was donated. Ground breaking for the Grotto began in September 2007 and steadily progressed. It was completed on February 23, one day before the dedication. The term grotto is defined as a cave or cavern, especially one that is picturesque or one that forms an agreeable retreat or an artificial cave... The Grotto stands over ten feet high with an opening to shelter the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes. Landscaping has been planted that, in years to come, will further shelter the area. The idea for the design of the Grotto came from a photo of a similar shrine in Donegal, Ireland, that Ken Growney showed the Knights of Columbus when he first suggested the idea. Faithfully submitted by Brother Gerry Ryan From that first day in September, 2007 when we first broke ground, to the laying of the foundation, to erecting the Grotto and placement of the statues, this project was a labor of love by all those involved.
