2 The President s Message Amazing, talented, wise, generous and inspiring are just a few of the words that describe the members, past and present, of Business Women of Missouri. I am in awe of the ladies who have shared their enthusiasm and led this organization through the years, laying the groundwork for us today. It is an honor to follow in their footsteps. The soaring eagle seems a perfect image to continue the momentum that has been generating over the past several years. In addition to being our national symbol, the eagle s grace, beauty and determination symbolizes our vision for BWM. The eagle alone avoids a storm by flying above the clouds. What an ingenious approach to looking at any situation that may arise fly above it, analyze it, and decide your course of action. This year I want to encourage everyone to embrace a positive attitude, and to live the belief that success is all in the state of mind. By creating this momentum, we will inspire others to join us in our mission to empower women personally, politically and professionally. The enthusiasm and dedication I saw when seeking committee chairs and members told me that, like the eagle, we will definitely be Soaring to Success. As outlined in the Issue Highlights, the BWM goals include: encouraging growth, promoting and creating awareness, providing opportunities and information, and teaching/mentoring others. LuAnn Irby, President Marketing, and Women s Health will inspire women so that we can soar to new heights! The Leadership Conference this summer will be in a new location a chance for all of us to spread our wings and explore! Make plans now to visit St. Clair and its surrounding beauty. And check out the Calendar of Events in this newsletter, mark the dates, and empower yourself by meeting the challenge and being able to say I did it! 10 It s All in the State of Mind News From Local Clubs If you think you re beaten, you are. If you think you dare not, and you don t. If you d like to win but think you can t, It s almost a cinch you won t. If you think you ll lose, you re lost. For out in the world you ll find Success begins with a fellow s will It s all in the state of mind. For many a race has been lost Before even a step has been run. And many a dreamer fails Before his work is begun. Think big and your deeds will grow, Think small and you ll fall behind, Think that you can and you will, It s all in the state of mind. If you think you are outclassed, you are. You ve got to think high to rise. You ve got to be sure of yourself Before you can ever win a prize. Life s battles don t always go To the stronger or faster man, For sooner or later the ones who win Are the ones who thinks they can. Walter D. Wintle (1st version published 1905) Hannibal held a New Member Orientation to welcome new members pictured above from left to right: Tamitha Overly, Lois Snider and Carolyn Taylor. Hannibal BWM President, Ann Moyers presented her goals for the club to stay active and strong internally and in the community. Hannibal BWM will accomplish this through cleaning a part of the highway (Adopt-a-Highway), participate in the annual Folk Life Festival, support the Avenues Center for Abused Women in the area and get the word out that the ERA Amendment needs to be passed by the Missouri Legislature. For the women in the area to Soar to Success, we will continue to support a high school senior and a non-traditional student with a scholarship each year. Hannibal s membership goal is to add at least 5 new members in 2015/2016. They will review this goal with goal setting strategies each month at monthly meetings. 11 State Conference Was an Inspiring Event First, I want to thank Sherry Rolen for taking a chance of a newer member to be the conference chair for It was quite an experience. The best part was allowing me to get to know so many of you fine ladies much better over the course of the year as we were putting the conference together. State Conference weekend commenced on Thursday night when about 25 of us met at the buffet to check out the BBQ, pasta, fresh fruit and salad, the killer cinnamon rolls and the dozens of desserts including very warm chocolate chip cookies. Friday started at the buffet again for individually handmade omelets and an array of other breakfast goodies. Next, was the pre-conference board of directors meeting that included a luncheon of soup and a tasty steak salad. During lunch, the group was educated about Harrah s and the story of how the female Assistant General Manager Julie Sola worked her way up the executive ladder. Following lunch we learned more about nutrition and reading food labels from a nutritionist at the North Kansas City Hospital. Next we had an afternoon snack of brownies and cookies (they were not labeled, thank goodness). We ended the afternoon hearing all about the ghosts haunting Missouri. I know next time I Genevieve Gibson Newman Independent Mary Kay Consultant 923 Woods Mill Rd, Chesterfield MO ggibson-newman@marykay.com phone hear something go bump in the night, I am going to wonder if I have a new friend in the house! President Sherry officially opened the conference after dinner, first on the agenda was a local young ladies Navy ROTC Color Guard; they looked so impressive with their military dress uniforms. We were welcomed by a representative from the North Kansas City Mayor s office, complete with a proclamation, by our NW Region Director Melissa Moore, and by Harrah s hotel. After all the greetings, Keynote Speaker Dr. Christopher Sirridge inspired us as he talked about women who have changed our world with their significant contributions. After a break, we handled some business of the conference body and heard from the candidates for the new year s executive committee. The assembly voted in Sharron Sutton, Sheila Miller, Deb Saffer and Brenda Clema as members of LuAnn s EC for next year. Later, we did a little partying in President Sherry s suite with some great munchies provided by the NW region. Saturday opened with another breakfast buffet and more business meetings as well as a group of younger ladies participating in our Generations Taking Charge program led by Angie Moran. At lunch I was so moved by all the donations for Hope House from our members as well as the House s speaker that told us about their mission. Since I was so moved, I forgot to give the speaker her gift, President Sherry and her mom, Betty Kershaw, took the gift and the $115 raised from the perfume set raffle and presented it to Nancy Duvall at Hope House after the conference. Saturday afternoon we learned how the women of Missouri went to war during the Civil War and fought side by side with their husbands, brothers and fathers. Next we learned more about taking care of ourselves and staying safe. The biggest take away for me was knowing I should trust that little voice in my head and the butterflies in my tummy. If either says it is not a good thing to go there or to talk to that person, I am going to follow that instinct. Submitted by Mary Clark, State Conference Chair Saturday night was the banquet and LuAnn s installation. The table decorations were beautiful, the appetizers and the entree were yummy! What a combination, filet and pork tenderloin. Too bad we cannot do that every night! Sherry gave an amazing farewell speech and even I had tears in my eyes. She had such a busy and productive year. We passed the military hat to collect donations and Dianne Simon presented $200 to the Whiteman Air Force Base, 509 Security Forces Squadron. We watched as LuAnn and her team were installed and learned we are going to soar with the eagles. LuAnn proceeded to tell us her plans for the upcoming year and we congratulated everyone and finally had some time to hit the casino! Sunday we had a country breakfast as our FUNdraiser and heard tales from radio days. After breakfast, incoming President LuAnn took over the meeting and told us what to look forward to in We heard another speaker and watched new PSP Sherry perform her last duty and close the conference. Onto 2016 to see what LuAnn and her Conference Chair Pam Adams have in store for us! I would like to make a special thank you to Sherry for her support, Jo Coleman for all the assistance, Brenda Clema for handling the vendors, and Vicki Silkwood, our first timers chair, who worked so tirelessly to help make the conference a success! And to our Sponsors, BWM Lees Summit, BWM Foundation, Nancy Hunter, AGP, a cooperative and our anonymous Sponsor. The sponsorships allowed us to get some outstanding speakers, give all the members a special registration gift of a tablet bag and to have some very yummy appetizers at the banquet. Although I went home sore and tired, I had a ball being your conference chair. Thank You all for making the 2015 Conference a success! Mary Clark Editor s Note: For all members who receive their MBW via , check out pages for photos of 2015 State Conference. 11
