1 WILLAMETTE STAMP & TONGS THE NEWSLETTER OF SALEM STAM P SOCIETY Volume 46 Issue 2 CELEBRATING 86 YEARS February 2019 WEBSITE JANUARY CLUB MEETING Everyone there enjoyed the 10:00 a.m. club meeting on a Saturday. The weather cooperated and some members found it easier to attend a Saturday morning meeting. The bidding was active at the Members Auction with competitive bidding on many lots. Auction director, Bob Reynolds, reports that 48 of the 55 lots sold.. FEBRUARY CLUB MEETING WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2019 AT 7:30 P.M. Aaron Currier will give a presentation on Lighthouses on Stamps. Aaron started collecting stamps when he was in elementary school, but then discontinued during his high school and college years. After college, when Aaron moved to the Oregon Coast, he developed an interest in photographing lighthouses. Eventually, he moved back to the valley but continued to travel the U.S. coastlines in search of more lighthouses. The stamp collection was also resurrected and a topical collection of, you guessed it...lighthouses was amassed. This will be a slide show of lighthouse stamps corresponding with those Aaron has photographed. TH HAPPY 86 BIRTHDAY SALEM STAMP SOCIETY The masthead of Willamette Stamp and Tongs now says: Celebrating 86 years, the club s birthday is February 27. So, we will celebrate the birthday at this meeting. Come to the meeting and wish Salem Stamp Society a happy birthday! See a related article about Salem Stamp Society s founding on page 3. DUES ARE DUE dues are now due. You may pay them by mail to: P.O. 2 PO Box 202 Salem OR or you may bring your dues payment to our February club meeting. Our dues are $10.00 for an individual member, $15.00 for a couple, and $5.00 for youth. Some members have already paid dues for If you don t know whether you have already paid dues for 2019, please check with treasurer, Alan Maul. If you are a member who joined Salem Stamp Society on or after July 1, 2018, your dues are already paid through December 31, Gary Tiffin, George Stellingwerf, Marc Dochez and Alan Maul each presented programs in 2018 and have received credit for a one year dues payment, which applies either for 2019 or for a later year if their dues were already paid ahead. If you would like to present a program in 2019, please contact vice president, Karen Nurmi. FROM THE PRESIDENT I hope that 2019 has begun well for you. We had a fantastic January meeting, with 38 members attending. Several of our regulars were unable to attend due to prior commitments; otherwise we may have set a new recent attendance record for club member s participation. The experimental Saturday morning meeting seemed to be popular, and many expressed a desire to do it again next year during the winter months when cold weather and darkness returns. The Saturday format allowed us to welcome two new members, who first met us last summer at the World Beat Festival. Chris and Emily Davis were accompanied by their pre-school daughter, Evelyn. The Davis family wasted no time in becoming active members, with Emily winning one of the door prizes, Chris being a successful bidder at the club auction, and Evelyn receiving her first stamp album and stamps through the generosity of Gary Tiffin. Welcome to the Davis family. Most of our goals set last year were accomplished, the major exception being that I was unable to contact every member during the year, although I spoke with the majority of the members sometime during the year. Perhaps I will be able to accomplish that pleasant task in We thank you for continuing your membership in our society, and hope that perhaps you will be able to attend one of the meetings this year. I am sure that any of our officers or board members would enjoy an or phone call telling us how you have been, and any ways in which the club can assist you in our mutual hobby. See or hear from you soon? Tom Crosby FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT Hello to you all, I have been busy with an assortment of stamps from previous shows, the Albany show and the coin and stamp show. Maybe I will finish six months from now, but at least I am trying. Lots of bidding at the Saturday meeting and lots of faces were to be seen. We even had a four year old join and father even bid on a couple of lots. We talked about having January and February meetings next year being on Saturdays and we would like your opinion at our February meeting. I was approached by several people saying that when it s dark in those months, Saturdays make more sense for them to not drive in darkness and bad weather. The board meetings have been very thorough and much has been discussed. Try out for the board next year and you will get some yummy desserts and coffee provided at the meetings with an understanding of what we discuss. Karen Nurmi SPRING STAMPEX Our March stamp show, Spring Stampex is March 17, at the Scottish Rite Center on South Commercial Street, in Salem. Reserve this date now on your calendar so you won t miss the show. Show director, Gary Tiffin, says that we may have more dealers than we have had before! More details to come in the March Willamette Stamp & Tongs. DO YOU WANT TO EXHIBIT AT OUR WILLAMETTE VALLEY STAMP EXHIBITION? Our Spring Stampex is combined with the Willamette Valley Stamp Exhibition, which is held in Eugene on March 16, and at our Spring Stampex on March 17. This is a great opportunity for first time exhibitors to show everyone what they collect and inform people about it. Exhibit

3 forms are on our club website: Click on shows. Then, in the paragraph about Stampex, click on Click Here to get to the Exhibit Forms and Prospectus. George Struble reminds club members that the closing date for exhibit forms to be in his hands is February 15. This is to give the judges time to do their homework so that they will be prepared to judge the exhibits. George s address is: gstruble@willamette.edu. If you have any questions, contact George. His telephone number is: The following article is made up of excerpts from the fall 2004 issue of Historic Marion, then published by the Marion County Historical Society. The article was written by Kyle Jansson. PHILATELY AND 1933: BOOM TIMES IN MARION COUNTY Like people elsewhere in the country, Marion County residents discovered the hobby of stamp collecting in the 1930's. When Franklin D. Roosevelt campaigned for presildent, in 1932, many people did not know that his favorite hobby was stamp collecting. As his inauguration drew near, more people learned that he usually spent a couple of hours daily on his hobby. What had been a child s hobby suddenly had the interests of adults as well. Carl S. Douglas, was the founder of. He lived about two miles from downtown Salem. He organized a meeting of all stamp collectors and persons interested in the stamp and cover seeking avocation on the evening of February 15, 1933, at the YMCA. About 30 people attended, looked at his album of first flight covers, and listened to Douglas outline the advantage of creating a formal organization. The group endorsed the idea, and appointed Douglas their temporary chair. They also elected Joseph Weber, Glen Niles and Warren F. Powers to create a constitution, bylaws and nominations of officers for their second meeting on February 27. Following the first meeting, Carl F. Smith, the society s temporary secretary, sent a summary of the meeting to Al Van Dahl, editor of Western Stamp Collector newspaper, which grew out of the Mill City Logue, in Mill City. Van Dahl had formally started the newspaper earlier that month, and Smith estimated that there were about 40 of the newspaper s subscribers in Salem. In addition, C.W. Noble agreed to talk at an organizational meeting for a junior club for children under age 17. Russell Robins, Roland Clarke and Roger Kellogg were appointed to nominate officers to it. Nine boys and one girl eventually joined as charter members of the junior division. s second meeting, on February 27, resulted in the formal organization of the group. Douglas was elected president, Smith secretary-treasurer, and Edith Patton vice president. Annual dues were set at 50 cents. A constitution and bylaws were adopted, and rules for the sale and exchange of stamps were approved. Forty people, including eight women, became Salem Stamp Society members by March 13. Three of them were postal clerks or carriers, while another worked as a messenger. Two carpenters, two mechanics, a laborer, an electrician, a mill winder, a painter, a driver and a foreman joined. White-collar workers such as three business owners, a Swedish-born teacher at the Oregon School of the Deaf, a cashier, a manager, an auditor, an engineer, and an assistant county clerk also joined, and dominated the early leadership. The wives of four members also joined, as did at least two sons and a daughter. One of the charter members, Thad Haskell, was a patient at the Oregon State Tuberculosis Hospital. He eventually became the secretary of the Oregon Stamp Club, one of two clubs of shut-ins supported by Salem Stamp Society. We have a large number of collectors here now and are having lots of fun, Haskell wrote of the hospital in Most of them are beginners and I am sure the stamps you sent will find a place in someone s album. In the fall of 1933, Western Stamp Collector became a twice weekly publication. Within a couple of years, VanDahl moved his operation to Albany where he would be close to the railroad lines for quick distribution of his newspaper. The publication thrived for the rest of the Van Dahl s lives and a while after, as Stamp Collector. Krause Publications purchased it in 1994 and later sold it to Amos Press (Linn s), where it ceased to exist.
