1 GREEN BAY PHILATELIC SOCIETY 2016 Baltic Terrace, Green Bay, WI President: Darryl Ruprecht Vol. 34 No. 5 May, 2014 Vice President: Dave Burrows Secretary: Ray Perry Editor: Ray Perry Treasurer: Kirk Becker Publisher: Darryl Ruprecht MAY MEETING Is It Spring Yet? WHERE: BROWN COUNTY SENIOR CENTER WHEN: May 15, 2014 (third Thursday of every month) TIME: Open 7:00 pm, business meeting 7:30 pm PROGRAM: Election of Officers and Silent Auction Reminder: We need volunteer members to pick up a key from the Senior Center by 4:00 pm on the day of the meeting. May s volunteer is Dave Burrows. April Meeting Visitor: Dave Carney was introduced. Dave has been a long time dealer participant in Baypex. Dave wanted to thank us first for seconding his nomination to the Wisconsin Philatelic Hall of Fame and secondly for all the work we did to help make Baypex 14 the best show he has had in a long time. Old Business: Dave Burrows will be back on key pick-up in May. Thanks to Randy Younger for pinch hitting for Dave these past several months. Dave Burrows wanted to thank the club for sending him the get well card following his eye surgery. Randy Younger mentioned that he has not yet heard back from Vera Felts at the American Topical Association in regards to forming a local chapter of ATA. New Business: Mark Schroeder and Dave Burrows were appointed delegate and alternate delegate respectively to represent GBPS at the Annual Business Meeting of the Wisconsin Federation of Stamp Clubs. The secretary will draft the credentials, get the president to sign them and mail them in to the Federation. Dave Carney reminded the club that the Appleton show is April 26 and that if anyone is headed down they will need to be prepared for detours due to road construction in the Appleton area. Juniors Committee: Nothing new. Show Committee: Ray reported that the dealers he had a chance to talk with had a good show and were very thankful for the extra effort our club puts into bringing the dealers in and out of the venue. Nominating Committee: Randy Younger reported that they have one club member willing to run for each of the four offices. Darryl encouraged others to toss their hat(s) in the ring. Nominations and election of officers will be held at the May meeting. Membership Committee: Ray mentioned that one of the five members from last year that intend to pay their dues has now paid up. Prior to the May meeting, Ray will contact the remaining unpaid members that have committed to remaining members. For Your Information: One item from Bob Petersen 1. How is our newsletter written, published, and mailed to the membership. Ray writes the newsletter, Darryl publishes it and prepares the address labels. Ken Coakley affixes the postage and gets the newsletter mailed in a timely fashion.

2 April Program: In addition to the usual silent auction a show and tell night was enjoyed by all. A pretty good number of club members brought a recent acquisition to the meeting to describe and pass around for other members to examine. Here is a summary: 1. Clete Delvaux Clete brought to our attention that April 23 would be the 450th anniversary of William Shakespeare s birth. Clete brought some 1st Day Covers of stamps commemorating some of the Bard s plays. 2. Dave Burrows Dave brought some Galapagos barrel covers. 3. Kirk Becker Kirk brought souvenir sheets from Thailand and New Zealand. He commented on the detail in the printing. Kirk also brought a Bhutan CD version of their old record stamps. 4. Mark Schroeder Mark brought some Italian trip tick stamps for mail from Rome, Italy to New York, NY. 5. Ray Hutchison Ray brought some early British including a penny red with a maltese cross cancel as well as some blued or ivory head stamps. 6. Arnie Nomenson Arnie brought an imperf press sheet of one of the Farley issues. 7. Ray Perry Ray brought a Canada Private Air on cover along with 3 patriotic covers. I for one thoroughly enjoy this program. After all don t we all enjoy showing a small part of our collection and don t we all enjoy seeing something that someone else has collected. To me this is the nuts and bolts of the hobby. It was great to see so many participants, thanks to all who brought something to show. Maybe next time even more folks will bring a show and tell item. May Program: The May program will be a silent auction. Remember we will also have election of officers in May. Inter Club with Oshkosh Philatelic Society: Back in February Clete Delvaux, Tom Johnston, and I went down to a meeting of the Oshkosh Philatelic Society. We had a wonderful time meeting fellow philatelists and seeing how their meeting is structured. Tom Johnston took some pictures at the end of that meeting with members of GBPS and OPS. I didn t have room for those pictures in last month s newsletter. They are shown at the top of the next column here. Maybe next time we can get a few more members to go along. From left to right: Clete Delvaux, Tom Johnston, and David Borchart (OPS President) From left to right: Sandy Kemp (OPS), Ray Perry, Clyde Douglas (OPS), Dave Carney (OPS), Bill Buchanan (OPS) Thanks to Tom Johnston for bringing the camera and taking the pictures. Ray s Ramblings Last month we ended our journey through U.S. stamps with the commemoratives issued in In 1940 The Famous Americans issues came out. These issues celebrated American excellence in seven different areas of expertise. These areas were authors, poets, educators, scientists, composers, artists, and inventors. There were five stamps with five different denominations issued for each area of expertise featuring five different Famous Americans in that field of expertise. Each of the five denominations in each area of expertise were the same color; 1 cent was green, 2 cent red, 3 cent purple, 5 cent blue, and 10 cent brown. The frame is the same for each area of expertise with the famous American s portrait in the middle. Just below the vignette is the denomination and a symbol indicating the area of expertise. I think this is a very interesting

3 and attractive set of issues and I think that this was a great overall issue in that it portrayed some of the top American men and women in their fields. Isn t that what most of us believe a stamp issuing policy should be all about? All that said, I m sure that issuing a 35 stamp set in 1940 raised some eyebrows, however by today s standards the total number of U.S. stamps issued in 1940 (44) is fairly conservative. Scott # There was only one stamp issued in 1941, that stamp commemorated the 150 th anniversary of Vermont s statehood. Imagine that only one commemorative stamp issued in an entire year. In 1942 the country tripled its output of new issues from 1 to 3. These issues included the 150 th Anniversary of Kentucky Statehood, Win the War, and Chinese Resistance stamps. Shown below is the Kentucky Statehood stamp. Kentucky Statehood Scott #904 Famous American Issues Scott # For the most part these stamps are not terribly expensive, in fact most of them are quite affordable even in mint condition. The 10 cent values in each issue gets a little high with the highest value stamp being the 10 cent American Inventors Alexander Graham Bell with a MNH value of $15.00 in the Harris 2013 U.S. catalogue. The rest of the 10 cent values are $6.00 or less for a MNH stamp. They go down from there. There were 9 more stamps issued in 1940 commemorating such things as Pony Express, Pan Am Union, Idaho Statehood, Wyoming Statehood, Colorado Expedition, National Defense Issue (3), and Emancipation. Most people are familiar with the 3 stamp National Defense Issue shown on a patriotic first day cover in the next column: 1943 started out with two definitive size commemoratives. These stamps were issued to draw attention to the Allied Nations and the Four Freedoms. The stamps are fairly plain in design and are shown below: Scott #907 Scott #908 It is said that President Roosevelt, a stamp collector himself, personally picked out the designs for both of these stamps. Scott #907 was to show the unity

4 of the allied nations and Scott #908 was to show the reasons the U.S. was getting into the war. Those were to protect the four freedoms he described in his State of the Union speech in 1941 and later made famous by Norman Rockwell s paintings also commemorated on U.S. stamps, a souvenir sheet to be precise (Scott #2840). This souvenir sheet is shown below: anyway. This series is shown below: Norman Rockwell s Four Freedoms (Scott #2840) This souvenir sheet was issued in 1994 along with a single stamp that shows the painting Rockwell did showing him in a self-portrait and also shown in the lower right corner of the souvenir sheet. Also issued between 1943 and 1944 was an issue known as the Overrun Countries Series. These stamps remembered the countries overrun by the Axis Powers during World War II. It showed the flags of the overrun countries against a white background surrounded by a blue border/frame. The series was engraved and is very appealing to my eye Overrun Countries Series (Scott # ) I think we will wrap it up here for the month. Remember to mark your calendars for Wiscopex 14 in Fond du Lac on May 17 and 18 at the Retlaw Plaza Hotel. Schedule of Events Shown below is the program schedule for the current year: May Election of Officers, Silent Auction June Joint Meeting with Appleton in Green Bay, Silent Auction (no business meeting) July Silent Auction (no business meeting) August Silent Auction (no business meeting) \
