5 143rd Annual DYC Officer's Ball The 143rd Annual Officer's Ball held Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the DYC celebrated Commodore Allen Pugh and Lady LaVerne. The image of ascending the grand staircase to greet and congratulate the new Commodores, Directors, Trustees, and Fleet Captains in a receiving line that wrapped around the outside of the staircase was amazing. Escorted by P/C Dave Caldwell, JN, my husband and I were overjoyed to represent DPS at such an important event. The DYC has been home to the for many, many years and the setting for many of our classes, vessel safety checks, flair demonstrations and CPR classes. We were honored to take part in the festivities. Dave and I enjoyed catching up with Ron and Daryl Dawes & P/C Joe Tatham, SN and Marge at the event. Ron will be the Master of Ceremonies for our DPS Commander's Ball on Saturday, May 18th and yes, we talked "shop" for a little bit. Everyone dressed to the 9's and some were even 10's! The Club was decorated with soft candlelight and beautiful floral arrangements. The ballroom was set with high top tables where guests set their beverages and plates of delicious appetizers. Afterwards we lined up for introductions into the Fountain Room and were pleasantly surprised when the received such a warm and enthusiastic greeting from the DYC Master of Ceremonies who spoke of all the valuable services we offer to members of the DYC. P/C Dave and I were seated in the Trophy Room at the table with P/C Vince Cooley, JN; P/C Doug Rocho, P; Mike Carnagie and Jim Ligoritis. Mike and Jim work with Doug at the Fraser Department of Public Safety where each is a Fraser firefighter as well as a member of the Fraser Honor Guard. P/C Doug said that, In 2000 a Fraser fire fighter lost his life in an arson fire. The Detroit Honor Guard participated in the funeral honoring the life of our fallen firefighter because the Fraser Fire Department did not have one. It was then that Mike Carnagie, me and others established the unit for the City of Fraser. DPS APPRECIATES YOUR HELP!!!!! Officer's Ball (cont d) honor, Vince, Doug, Mike and Jim performed a "rescue" of service. The Marine Honor Guard was unable to perform the ceremony due to the government shut down. Commodore Pugh and Lady LaVerne made a special point of thanking each of them as they walked around each table greeting their guests. The Grand March after dinner is always quite a spectacle walking two by two's, then three by three's, etc., until there are 8 across. After the Grand March, our Honor Guard, marched in with flags and rifles, using precision steps. They looked so handsome! The first dance of the evening was with the Honor Guard and the First Ladies! I applaud our men for stepping out of their comfort zone, being in the spotlight and doing DPS and the Fraser Department of Public Safety Honor Guard proud! Commander Wendy Caldwell, P SEE US ON FACEBOOK The has been promoting safe boating through education since 1916! 8 Falling in Love With Boating Moments in the Life of P/C Dalibor Chuck Treska, SN by Lt Dara Brooks, P On Russell Island When I think about Russell Island I think of P/C Chuck Treska, SN. A small, private island in the St. Clair River located between Algonac, Michigan and Walpole Island, Ontario, Canada it can only be accessed via ferry or boat and the only motorized vehicles allowed are golf carts. With over nine decades on this earth Chuck s seen, heard and experienced a great deal. A long time boater with thousands of hours on the water and long time member of the Detroit Power Squadron, he has been keeper of some of our earliest history. With that in mind I asked him about how he got started in boating. On Boating There was joy in his voice when he began his story. When I was about twelve years old my dad bought me a 8 double ended plem with both ends flat like a transom. I d maneuver myself on the water with a large stick. Chuck talked about spending all of his summers as a youth on Russell Island bopping around, swimming, fishing and exploring with his dog Teddy, a long-haired shepherd. He got lost in his memories of watching the Tassmo Boat dock and then take off again. He watched as Chris Craft, known then as Chris Smith & Sons Boat Company built and tested their runabouts on the river. He was over joyed as he talked of Gar Wood setting records on the St. Clair River five times with his Miss Americas raising it to miles per hour in Putting all of that into perspective we have to start at the beginning. On His Beginnings Chuck was born Dalibor Dolraslav Treska the third son and youngest child of Vaclav Treska and the former Rose Barbara Kinsky. The couple and their two oldest children emigrated from Austria Hungary and settled in Detroit, he in 1906 and Rose and the children in With his strong desire to succeed father Vaclav parlayed his skill as a watch maker into ownership of two Detroit jewelry stores. Chuck laughs when he thinks back to his days as a youngster. His mother Rose used to rag on his father about buying so much property but it was her husband s way of embracing his portion of the American dream. Getting Closer to That Dream Chuck recounts the story as follow, A customer walked into the family jewelry store and knowing that my dad purchased land offered a piece of land on an island in Algonac. Times were hard and the customer had made the decision to let it go in order to pay for her children s college. Despite the fact that Mother Rose had put her foot down long ago about buying more property Mr. Treska bought the property sight unseen. Vaclav Treska was doing all he could to grab his part of the brass ring. So with two of his kids in tow Vaclav went to investigate this The photo of the Detroit River taken by Lt Dara Brooks from the Detroit Yacht Club. 6

9 Falling in Love With Boating (cont d) island property. Upon his return he told his wife that there was no piece of jewelry in his stores that could compare to the beauty of that island. Despite the lousy roads between Detroit and Algonac where the family had to cross the water by ferry to the little island in 1925 the Treska family became owners of their version of the American dream and in 1929 they built a home. Chuck says that he was first taken to the family s island retreat when he was six months old and it has always been an integral part of his life. This home which still stands continues to be a source of joy for Chuck who still spends his summers there. His Advice to Today s Boater Slow down and enjoy it rather than racing around like you re Gar Wood. Other than making you look good it does no good for the boat. 10 ALCOHOL/ELECTRIC MARINE STOVES by P/C Diane Dawes, AP DPS Safety Officer It has always been of my opinion that in order to properly know our vessel a complete knowledge of all systems is necessary, including small appliances. In the case below, that was something that wasn t taken into consideration. I was speaking with my sister s father-in-law recently and asked if he had any trouble with the boat being laid up this winter. His comment was that he didn t have to worry about it as it was in a fire about three months prior. Flabbergasted, I wanted to know what happened to the boat. He told me that on his 2003 Regal was an alcohol/electric stove. He was the only owner of the boat and had never used the stove. When he arrived at the boat, it was pretty cold and he wanted to warm some water while he was getting the boat ready to lay-up. While filling the cup with alcohol he must have spilled some in the tray of the stove area. When he lit the stove it went up in flames. He grabbed the fire extinguisher and tried to put out the fire but wasn t able to stop the flames with one extinguisher and ran above to grab another. A neighbor saw the emergency and pulled him from the boat. The fire department came and was able to smother the fire, before the gas tanks exploded. Unfortunately, his boat was a total loss, another lost its canvas top and there was some damage to the dock. However, there wasn t a loss of life or limb so all in all it was a blessing. I was thinking back to my days of using our alcohol/electric stove and remembering that there was a fill tank where we would fill with alcohol. It was safer to fill when we used a small funnel. We didn t use the alcohol portion of the stove unless we were unable to plug in to electric. I wonder if today the alcohol stoves are still made the same way. One small spillage caused thousands of dollars of damage. It makes you think, doesn t it? 11 POWER SQUADRON, ALWAYS FAMILY by Lt Dara Brooks, P No matter where we travel we are always able to find refuge, camaraderie and boating support with members of the Power Squadron. While spending time in Florida we were invited to a Venice Power & Sail Squadron luncheon at Pop s Sunset Grille in Nokomis, Florida along the waterways of Lyon s Bay looking at the Albee Road Bridge. As boats of varying brands and sizes passed us by we wished for lottery winnings to buy this one and oh, that one! But seriously, Commander Susan Parrish, AP and her members made us feel like one of the gang. LeRoy and Joyce Strey invited us to their Englewood winter home for dinner. In attendance were Don and Val O Brien, longtime friends and members of the dinner group back in Michigan that also includes the Streys, P/C Chuck Treska, SN; P/C Jerry Stoll, AP; Lt Joanie Stoll; Bernie Buhlinger; Pat and Blaine Zublin and P/Stf/C Sally Lemus, P. The surprise guest was Mary Fritz, a snow bird herself, longtime friend and former companion of member George Flees after the passing of Ethel Bebel. Top: Joyce Strey, S; Val O Brien and Mary Fritz.
