1 Markham Mariner J U N E M A R K H A M P O W E R S Q U A D R O N N E W S In This Issue Training IN THIS ISSUE: Training Report 1 School Program 1 Graduation 2 Markham AGM 4 July Rendezvous 5 Bridge Contacts 6 Welcome aboard everyone. June is now upon us, but before we leave the dock for the summer, your bridge has the following highlights to share with you in this issue of the Mariner. Grad night: Two of our students are also bridge members now! AGM: Motion for name change to Markham Agincourt Squadron Passes Unanimously! We are in the schools! Upcoming rendezvous on Georgian Bay Kudos to our Training Officer Don Tod on heading up the group for another busy year in addition to teaching the Boating and Boat Pro courses.. Our training department held fall and spring Boat Pro courses with close to 30 students who took, wrote and passed the course. Boating had 12 who took the course with 10 writing and passing, VHF had 9 who took, wrote and passed, Electronic charting had 11 taking the course with 3 doing the first write and passing. The balance will write at a later date. Thanks to Don Macintosh for assisting in the Boating course this year, to Dave Ross and Dave Ingalls for teaching Boat Pro and to Art Wootton for teaching the Electronic Charting course. Watch Out Don and Don Here comes the Dave & Dave show! A great initiative taken on by Lori Williams, Art Wootton, Dave Ingalls and Dave Ross is the new program to teach Boat Pro in the schools. As you may recall from the spring Mariner, the group was busy working with York Region District School Board on getting Approved Service Provider status. We are delighted to announce that this has been achieved, and actually have approval to contact and offer the course to any of the almost 200 schools throughout the region! The first course is in progress at Reesor Park Public School in Markham, with Dave Ross and Dave Ingalls instructing 9 students. We hope to expand this program in the fall by inviting the squadrons of York East and York West Districts to join with us in approaching additional schools in York Region.
2 PAGE 2 Graduation Banquet Following an excellent meal, our guest speaker, biologist and environmental expert James Kamstra, gave a most interesting presentation on the Thirty Thousand Islands of Georgian Bay. James provided insight into the flora and fauna of this special part of the earth, with details on the various rock formations and how their beauty came to be. Now we know what to expect at the July Squadron rendezvous featured elsewhere in this edition! Over 40 attendees came out to Meadowbrook Golf and Country Club on May 21 to celebrate the graduates of the Boating and Boat Pro courses and welcome them as new members of CPS. They are: Boating Franca Andolina Arthur Bulof Ron Maddock Paul Andolina Karen Clarke Don Smith Dean Blundell Catherine Dowling Angelo Virgilio Phil Forestall Boat Pro Fall 2008 Youssef Abi Nader Lorna Holborn May Glen Richardson Maureen Anstey Al Lyons Gary Ringwood Wayne Ham Robin May Marilyn Tunnicliff Richard Hayes Karen Newman Dennys Van Fleet Sharon Quartarone Boat Pro Spring 2009 Rosalba Arnott Ches Efford Diane Purdy Terry Arnott Janice Laevens Rus Sethna Patricia Bain Charli McIsaac Kenneth Tsui Liz Cryer Jaccob McIsaac Those passing elective courses were also acknowledged: Maritime Radio Arthur Bulof Catherine Dowling Robert Seaton Terence Cheung Phil Forestall Don Smith Edward Chung Ron Maddock Art Wootton Electronic Charting Arthur Bulof Phil Forestall Ron Maddock Art Wootton was also recognized on attaining the grade of Senior Navigator. 4 PAGE 4 Markham Annual General Meeting Our annual general meeting was held May 26, with over 20 members attending. In recognition of the fact that Markham Squadron has absorbed the membership and territory of the former Agincourt squadron, a motion that the name of the squadron be change to Markham Agincourt Squadron was put forward and carried unanimously. This has now been submitted to National for approval. Also exciting was the election and pledging of our new bridge for the coming year, as well as the appointment of two others as follows: Elected Commander: Mark Orge back for another year! Executive Officer: Lori Williams back for another year! Training Officer: Don Tod back for another year! Assistant Training Officer: Bob Chapman Welcome! Secretary: Ron Smith: Welcome!
