2 page 2 Cdr Mark Gunn A view from the bridge The Change of Watch was a lot of fun. Thanks to all who made it. I think we ended up with 46 members present. I want to thank all the Past Commanders who gave me encourangement and advice. I want to thank Darrell Sausser for being our Installing Officer and Marla Brown, the Chief Tom Cod, for her remarks - she did a great job. We have a good Bridge this year and will welcome the new ideas of Brent and Arnold. Wendy has been busy as my Executive Officer, mainly keeping me on track with my duties. She will be a great asset to me, the Bridge, and Arrowhead, with her experience in general and her specialized knowledge, having been Rick s right-hand-man throughout his year as Commander, and having been Secretary and Treasurer. Please remember that for the General Meetings for March, April, May and June, 2011, they will be the SECOND WEDNESDAY of the month at the Elks Lodge in San Bernardino. We did not take formal action on the motion to change the bylaws concerning our regular meeting day. Instead, the concensus of the members was to have the Bridge exercise it s authority to set meetings at times and places with proper notice. We will keep you informed of any further changes. We started off the year with a great cruise to Avalon in January. So, as weather permits, let s get back to the sea, as it was our mutual love of the water that brought us all together. Mark Gunn, JN, Commander Admin s Anchorage Soundings from AO Arnold Rowe For those of you for whom I may be a new face, my membership in Arrowhead goes back over several decades but most of that has been simply as a yearly dues paying member. With my retirement a few years ago from GE HealthCare and now Phyllis retirement from RCC Nursing Faculty after 42 and a half years, we are both wanting to get more involved in using our Catalina 36 sailboat berthed in slip AA-28 in downtown Long Beach marina. As your AO, I am a point person for seeking out speakers and presentations for all of us to enjoy. If there are programs that you believe would be of interest to our fine group of nautical notables, contact me and we ll see if we can get a presentation scheduled. 3 Along the Fo c stle of the good ship SEO Hal Gayer - - Well, here we go again... page 3 I am going to call a meeting of all our instructors to plot the education course for the Squadron. I plan to do this right after the Spring Conference. I will let you know the time and place. Two classes are working. John Walker s Advanced Piloting Class is in testing. Rick Sherwood s Piloting Class started on 2 February at his home in Rancho Mirage with four students. USPS is now allowing Squadrons to teach all classes to the public. National has instituted a Certified Instructor Program that allows us to do this teaching. The Spring Conference on 4,5 March, 2011 held at the Four Points Sheraton, Ventura will have an Instructor Recertification Seminar. I am listing all Arrowhead Instructors that need to recertify. If you can possibly attend the conference at Saturdays Seminars it would help the Squadron greatly. Names of Arrowhead Instructors that need recertification are: Loren Beebe, Paula Ervin, Jan Freeman, Dick Garrison, Ed Hargis, Bob Holcomb, Bob Knierim, Steve Lebo, Lew Lyons, Nachman s, Darrell Sausser, John Traufler, John Walker. Education is one of the three pillars USPS. Let us,you and I, make Arrowhead one of the strongest. See you on the water Hal Changing Tide SEA SCOUT SHIP 195 We have been given several more used vessels to add to our small flotilla. We are now in the middle of deciding which we will give to another Sea Scout Ship starting up in the Riverside area and which we will keep. Included is a 19' Glastron powerboat. When the DMV paperwork is complete we will haul it to the high desert where several Squadron members have agreed to give it a thorough inspection before we decide what to do with it. I must correct some information I included in last month s LOG article. The Ship s flotilla is stored at the XXX Ranch (not the Tracy Ranch) and the Ranch owner is Patrick O Brian (Lee s Grandson). The damage to the XXX Ranch is still being repaired but if you re looking for their landmark flagpole and electric gate you re going to have to wait awhile. A few other repairs are taking precedence. Hopefully this week s storms will not add to the damage already suffered....pat Rogers, Skipper Sea Scout Ship 195 Changing Tides

4 page 4 XO Expoundings & Ramblings... A new squadron year has begun, and we are hitting the ground running. We have planned a lot of cruises and activities, so please plan to JOIN IN this year. REMEMBER that we are going to CHANGE the general meeting night from Thursday to Wednesday beginning in March. Our NEXT MEETING WILL BE WEDNES- DAY MARCH 9 at the San Bernardino Elks. PLEASE remember to get your reservation in to Pat Rogers. This month we have the District 13 conference in Ventura March 4-6, and our own Mike Mann will become the District commander. There is a sail race set for March 12. All the skippers can use crew members so if you are interested, call me. We will be glad to get you out on a boat. The Ensenada Race will be early this year April 15, and April 29 will begin the Lake Mojave cruise. There is a lot L/Cdr Wendy Sherwood, S of planning to do for the Mojave cruise. If you want to participate, please contact me for information. Our Log Bending potluck at the end of March will be hosted by Jan and Barry Freeman on SUNDAY March 27. There are still some dates available in 2011 to host a log bending let me know if you would like to organize one. The past several years Arrowhead has completed large numbers of Vessel Safety Exams. It is time to start again for complete information, forms and stickers, please contact Pat Rogers. We have an active and FUN year planned and look forward to seeing YOU at some activities. If you have any questions, or any suggestions for other activities, give me a call we will get you involved. I m planning a trip into the Gulf Island area of Canada next summer, leaving August 14th. The cruise will probably be a month duration. Also remember that a passport is necessary to enter Canada, and reenter the U.S. Any one interested in going with me, please contact me. 7 page 7 William T. Winter passed away peacefully on Feb. 19, 2011 at the age of 90. He was born on Aug. 20th 1920 in St. Paul, Minnesota, and raised in Superior, Wisconsin. He served in the Air Force for 20 years as a communications officer, retiring as a Major. He married Mavis E. Olson on Jan. 1 st 1944 in New Haven, Connecticut. Together they raised 4 children; Jeff, Tom, Mark and Peggy. Throughout his life Bill was involved in many activities. Some of his favorites were amateur radio, The Retired Officer s His son, Tom, preceded him in death in He lost his beloved wife Mavis in In 2004 Janet Rumanuk introduced him to her mother Pat,both she and Bill having lost their spouses after over 50 years of marriage each. Little did she realize they would fall in love (both were in their 80s) and get married and spend 7 wonderful years together. Pat survives him, and he is also survived by his sister Lorraine Webster of Clarence Center, New York, as well as 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Association and especially boating.
