3 PEARL HARBOR HAWAIIAN CIVIC CLUB E Paepae I Luna Loa I Ka Malamalama Hold High the Light of Knowledge Chartered: April 16, 1964 President s Message AUGUST Mahalo, to our Officers and Board of Directors and all the members who helped with our Scholarship Fundraiser s throughout our past year. We contributed our valuable time and strong efforts to raise those moneys. A special recognition should be mentioned here to those members, family members and friends who came out to assist in the IUCN Convention held at the Neal Blaisdell Arena. This was the largest fundraiser this club has ever accomplished in one day and raised the most money. Along the same line we must recognize the person who worked very hard behind the scenes to coordinate this fundraising event, and that was Toni Lee". Toni is a charter member of Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club and knows every member that she personally contacted for this large event. Her efforts made this event the most successful fundraiser in recent years. This is why we had a healthy amount to give out in scholarships for our leaders of tomorrow. The latest very successful fundraiser was the Annual Mango Jam. Mahalo to our members who made and donated mango items for us to sell. Mahalo, to all who came out and worked at our Mango Munchies booth. Another mission accomplished fundraising event. T-E-A-M! YEAH, TEAM! 2

4 Congratulations to all of our scholarship recipients who qualified for scholarship from Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club. I hope you all apply yourselves and get that degree. Study hard, and remember your commitment to Pearl Harbor Hawaiian Civic Club that you all have twenty hours of community service and attend three of our monthly General Membership Meeting. This commitment started in July 2017 and ends in June 2018, so you have all that time to complete your commitment to our hu`i. I m asking every club member to check your schedule for September. As we want as many members to come out and assist with the Aloha Festivals Floral Parade, on Saturday, September 30. If you can assist you can call Toni Lee at (808) ; she ll have something to fit every request for your assistance. Ahui Hou, Charles Kapua Charles Kapua President 3

6 ALI I SUNDAY Sunday, August 6, 2017 PHHCC members attended Ali'i Sunday for Kamehameha III at Kawaiaha'o Church. Kamehameha III was the son of Kamehameha the Great and Queen Keopuolani. King Kamehameha III reigned thirty years, , the longest of any King in HAWAI'I. In 1835 he decreed that a permanent house of worship be built. Plans for Kawaiaha'o Church were drawn by Rev. Hiram Bingham, and seven years later Kawaiaha'o Church was dedicated. In one of his speeches one Sunday he said, Ua mau Ke ea o Ka 'aina I Ka Pono...The life of the land is perpetuated by righteousness which later became our State's Moto. Attending the service and in the picture are Moana Sanders, Ka'iulani Hess, Mama Sandy Kaina, Charles Kapua, Kahu William Kaina and Toni Lee. 5

We are going to Haku Laua`e to drape on the Statue and then put the strands of purple Crown Flower lei on top of the laua`e. We have found that the statue is very hot when we drape the lei so we are going to try to put laua`e lei on first and lei the purple crown flower on top of the laua`e so the crown flower lei will last longer. So if you have laua`e and purple crown flower, please bring them to U`ilani Kuie`e s office in Mapunapuna where we will be stringing lei that morning at 9:00 a.m. You can start picking the Crown Flower on Wednesday, wet them down and refrigerate them.
