Psalm 16:7-8 7 I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. Looking over our building site, I see hope. The archeologists are near the end of hand digging approximately 5,000,000 pounds of dirt. (This isn t a typo) To my knowledge, this is the single most unique massive achievement ever attempted in the construction of a building in Hawai i. The time, energy, persistence, money and commitment by all is a testament to complete dedication, devotion and belief of our mission to honor God, love one other and make disciples. There have been many obstacles near and far that have impeded our progress, but we stand steadfast in our covenant with God to complete this building for our keiki and mo opuna. With perseverance, solid resolve and encouragement from Ke Akua, we re moving forward. Stand firm for there will be more impediments, but together we ll realize our plans and dreams. A key ingredient to our success will be the new Capital Campaign Task Force. So far LeeAnn Crabbe, Frank Pestana and I comprise the task force and we re looking for more. If God leads you to help, if you know others who need a challenge or have contacts who want to invest in the future of God s Kingdom, please have them contact me at We welcome God s team, God s people and God s messengers. 5 years ago, no one envisioned we would be where we are today. But what is important is 5 years from now we look back at the miracles God executed to accomplish what many believed impossible! At that time we ll celebrate His victories, His people and His building which will be reaching thousands more for His Kingdom. May His Kingdom come! Kahu Curt Kekuna ~ Mission Statement ~ Kawaiaha o Church honors and affirms Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. Through God s word expressed through worship, education, and mission, we will equip God s disciples unto faithfulness and fruitfulness. We will clearly represent Jesus Christ to others and perpetuate our Hawaiian cultural heritage. Adopted April 2007

2 Aha Iki at Kawaiaha o Church Montie Hess Thank you Heavenly Father for blessing our church as hosts for the Association of Hawaiian Evangelical Churches, AHA IKI, which was held on 6-7 June The Lord led us through every step of the way. We witnessed miracle after miracle which is a testimony of the strength of our Love for God, the love we have for each other and the love for our church. Our planning intent was to glorify our God and fulfill his will and honor the AHA IKI participants. Our supporting scripture that guided our Planning Committee came from Proverbs 16:30; Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed. The first word that we would host this year s AHA IKI came in February. The theme of the conference was Imagine us as being one and the mana o was let us keep our eyes on Jesus. Time wise we were behind the power curve but with our Lord we knew that he would provide everything that we needed. All we had to do was to listen and obey God. As Host Church we had the responsibility to provide the conference venue, provide 6 meals, snacks and refreshments for 80 delegates, plan two worship services, an activity night program and provide workshops for the second day of the conference. The hearts and minds of the people of our church came together to help in whatever way they could. Every Ministry supported in the planning and or the execution of the AHA IKI with upwards to volunteers each day giving of their time to the Lord. It is a testimony to the strength of our Love of God, each other and our Church. Mahalo for your contributions, hard work, and participation to make this AHA IKI a great success! We do want to take this opportunity to thank our planning committee members: Kahu Curt Kekuna, Rachel Soma, Buddy Nalua I, Aunty Pua Caindec, Bill Haole, Kanani Kawika, Kaipo Akaka, Darren Almeida, Lamela Kahalepuna, and Bob Albin. Special mahalo to Aunty Pua for her fearless leadership and with the support of the Kupuna Ministry in taking on the Food Committee. Mahalo Kaipo Akaka and the Youth Ministry for precious time spent cleaning, painting and sprucing up our gymnasium. Mahalo Bill Haole for the daunting task of the parking plan and for being the emcee and taking care of whatever came up with such grace and style. Mahalo Buddy Nalua I for planning and preparing all the programs and recruiting the help of our Hula Halau, and the Praise and Worship and Team. Special thanks to Senator Brickwood Galuteria and His Friends for providing the wonderful Hawaiian music during our Lū au Dinner Program.

3 Aha Iki at Kawaiaha o Church (Con t) Kaiulani Hess The first day of the conference was held in the gymnasium. With its new coat of paint, decorated with flowers and greenery donated by many members and palm trees on loan for the day by Hawai i 50, the gymnasium looked great and ready for the conference to conduct its business. Aunty Pua made sure the delegates were kept as cool as possible with beverages and refreshing snacks all day to include a dish of pound cake, ice cream. Praise the Lord! That evening, our church had the opportunity to show case our many talents by presenting a program focused on the conference theme of: Imagine Us Being As One. Special thanks to Aunty Juliette, Jon Yasuda and our Youth Group for presenting their thoughts and reflections on the conference theme. Lunalilo Mausoleum, and Iolani Palace, ending with an evening of singing and fellowship during the Hō ike/ AHA MELE. On the second day, we moved all of the conference activities to our Sanctuary and our delegates had the great experience of having all their meals served under the shade of our beloved Keawe Tree. God provided us a most beautiful day. It was a long and full day for our delegates. In addition to continuing the conference business agenda, our delegates had the opportunity to visit the Mission Houses, after all the planning, it is God s vision and His will that was done. All the Glory is Our Father s. We witnessed God s miracles at every step of the way. It was miracle after miracle to see God working in so many different ways as he brought delegates from across our beautiful Hawaii to our Kawaiaha o Church. Mahalo Ke Akua. Kaiulani and Montie Hess

4 HIM Conference Name Above All Names Lenora Cossey-Taft Hawaiian Islands Ministries Conference, March 22-24, 2012 Imagine honoring the Lord with 3,000 to 4,000 other Christians from about 400, statewide churches and 30 denominations? At least 50% of these 2012 HIM Conference attendees were under the age of 30. In Jesus name we have unity and diversity. Emotionally healthy skills for loving well must be experienced as in learning to ride a bicycle. The Bible tells us that the greatest measure of spiritual maturity is our ability to love well. It was encouraging to witness the commitment attendees have to each other while serving the world around them. Speakers and teachers shared how God is working in such places as Queen s, New York City; Beijing, China; various parts of Africa, South America, and Australia; Waianae, Chinatown, and Waikiki. The International Justice Mission, home based in Washington D.C., has Christian lawyers working with various nations to enforce laws against human labor and sex trafficking. IJM continues to rescue and free children and adults enslaved all over the world. First time HIM speakers, Pete and Geri Scazzero, challenged us by sharing what God has done in their marriage and ministry together. Quit pretending everything is fine and change your life. Eight life-changing spiritual formation principles that are foundational for authentic Christian living. Choosing to quit: being afraid of what others think; lying; dying to the wrong things; denying anger, sadness, and fear; blaming; over-functioning; faulty thinking; living someone else s life. Choosing instead to do something different that can lead to life transformation. Plan to attend HIM Conference, March 7-9, 2013 at the Honolulu Convention Center. Yes, it is costly financially and in your use of time, but the Lord will honor and bless you. Without a doubt each HIM conference grows in size and in what it has to offer to enrich your walk with the Lord. Being Jesus disciple means to be life transforming learners, effectively teaching others to be and do His will. Women of Kawaiaha o Mothers Day Luncheon The annual Mother's Day luncheon was held at the beautiful Willows Restaurant on Saturday, May 12, 2012, with twenty-five women in attendance. It was an enjoyable get-together for delicious food, fun, games, fellowship and prayer. Mahalo to all who participated in the poignant readings and tributes to our mothers. A special mahalo goes out to Danna Lyman for her hard work and organizational skills in putting this all together. Sharon Cenal

6 Dedication Ceremony for the Naone-Bailey Home With the long standing affiliation the Women of Kawaiaha o has had with Habitat for Humanity, it was a pleasure to be a part of the dedication of the Naone-Bailey home in Papakolea held on April 14th. Martha Albin, Francine Kaiona, Lissa Leong, Becky Kekuna, Keiko D Enbeau and Lenore Cossey-Taft from WOK attended the event. Key sponsors and donors of the project were in attendance, and Governor Abercrombie was the guest speaker. The Women of Kawaiaha o donated a large Family Bible to the families. Keiko D Enbeau gave the opening prayer, and the program culminated with the cutting of the maile lei by the family followed by the blessing of the home by Kahu Kekuna. After the ceremony, the attendees got to tour the home. Keiko D Enbeau

7 Aloha Aunty Sharon! Sharon Compton was a dedicated teacher who loved children! She first came to Kawaiaha o Church School in 1989 devoting 23 years of service this year. Sharon was one from the old school who believed and lived in what she did, dedicating her life and time to her profession. Her love for the keiki was a special one, often times that special caring aunty or person to those that didn't have someone like her in their lives. Kawaiaha o Church School Staff Sharon equally enjoyed country line dancing, doing crafts, and bargain shopping in her free time. She loved shopping for the best deals and got the cutest items to complete her line dancing outfits being the "spiffiest" aunty in line. She was so excited when Kahu announced that he would come over to do the line dancing at the schools 2011 Harvest Festival. Sharon also loved spending time at home with her cat while working on different craft projects. She always worked on the latest rubber stamp techniques producing card collections and other stamped items. Before her passing, Sharon made it a point to see that her collection of supplies and materials were given to Kawaiaha o Church School. Teachers fondly remember receiving Sharon's homemade Christmas gifts of soap. Some years you'd even find Sharon and Shirley Peterson selling their creations at Kawaiaha o's Makeke. Mahalo ke Akua for her use of these given talents. We have all been blessed by these. Sharon was definitely a people person. She loved participating in various activities going on around town. You would certainly see her at the church's annual picnic, tree lighting events, and various church related activities that the school was involved in. She was also the first one to sign up for the annual Kapi olani Hospital s Cancer Kids Christmas party where the teachers and staff prepare and lead craft activities for the children with cancer. Originally from Bristol, Pennsylvania, Aunty Sharon was blessed with a loving family of two sons and five grandchildren. In fact she is survived by her father. Aunty Sharon lived a good life. Her memory will live on amongst the ohana of Kawaiaha o.

8 Bible Study Group In Pearl City Martha Albin In February of this year a Bible Study group was formed in Pearl City. This group meets every Monday evening from 6:30-9:30 pm at Flamingo s Restaurant in Pearl City. The group, which includes both men and women, spend the first hour eating a delicious meal. Favorites on the menu include Portuguese bean soup, chicken tofu, seafood salad, hot turkey sandwich, a variety of other hot and cold sandwiches, and ono deserts, including fresh banana and apple pies. Following the meal we delve into our study of the book of Acts. Our members come not only from Pearl City, but also from Mililani, Wahiawa, Honolulu, and Waianae. See photo (several of our members were absent at the time of the photo due to travel.) Anyone interested in joining this group may contact Martha Albin.

Both events were highly successful and we are so thankful to Ke Akua who gave us the strength and fortitude to go on. About $2700 was collected from the White Elephant Sale which will be used to help Kawaiaha o in its many programs. Mahalo nui loa to everyone. Our most current project is a Cookbook. The Kūpuna have started gathering some of their favorite recipes which will be compiled into a memorable cookbook. Forms are available right now and they can be picked up at the business office. Please share your favorite recipes and have them included in a cookbook, the second for Kawaiaha o church. We know there are many good cooks out there. Recipes may be submitted by anyone. They will be collated, reviewed for completeness and sorted into various categories. Your help will be most appreciated. Any questions may be directed to Aunty Pua Caindec.
