1 The ELKS Call Vol. 34, No. 4 Huntsville Elks Lodge No July, 2016 Let me start out by saying it s really hard to believe June is over. We had so many important and exciting events during the month that it seemed to be over in a matter of days! A few highlights included the mid-year Alabama Elks State Convention which was held at the Huntsville Marriott. I m proud to say that our lodge was well represented. The weekend was filled with honors and commendations for our members. Saturday morning began with me presenting three of our local scholarship winners with state scholarships valued at $2, each. Also at the morning meeting, Brenda Miller was appointed to the State Scholarship Board. During the mid-day meeting, Melody Cathey was elected Assistant Vice President to the Northern District. At the evening banquet, our lodge received four very distinctive awards; Darwin Baker won the Ritual Award for his recitation of Jolly Cork Toast, and Melody Cathey won the Ritual Award for her recitation of the Eleven O clock Toast. The Jolly Cork Toast was the original 11th hour toast to remember absent members before being replaced by the version we use today. Finally, Darwin and Sunny Baker helped our lodge win two ENF awards. One for second place in ENF Capital Goal Contributions, and the other for fourth place in ENF Most in Total Donations. All in all, it was great weekend for Elks Lodge Another important event was our Flag Day Celebration. As is our tradition, we celebrated Flag Day at the Huntsville Madison County Veterans Memorial. This was an absolutely wonderful event. Wayne Tucker and his committee are to be commended for a job well done; we received only praise from community officials and an extra bonus was the press time we received on the radio, TV, and in print. Also in June, we began a new tradition, The Elk of the Month award. Winners were Danita Hall (April), Cathy Kulas (May), and David Burkett (June). When you see them, please congratulate them as I d like them to be recognized for their substantial work and volunteerism. We finished the month with one of the best golf tournaments in which I ve ever had the pleasure to play. Randy and Brenda Morris, along with all their committee members, should be very proud of this successful event. We have quite of bit to look forward to in July, also. I will be attending the Grand Lodge Convention in Houston July 3; I am really looking forward to this opportunity to learn more about how to help and improve our own lodge. On July 8th, our Drug and Awareness Chairman, Patrick Mickle and his committee, will be at the Harvest Youth Club for the annual cookout and educational seminar. Please see Patrick or Bob Gamble for more information or to volunteer for this worthy cause. Our social calendar is full during the month of July so make sure you pay attention to all the events we have planned. You definitely don t want to miss out! In closing, I would like to remind everyone of a part of the oath we took during initiation: Fraternally, Jerry Buzzy Byrom As Elks, our whole influence in life is determined by the good deeds we do rather than by the emotions we feel. Leading Knight to new members during the initiation ritual.
2 From Your House Committee: Bills and taxes against the Club are paid and current. Welcome to the Club's new Sunday bartender, Sheila Turner. Also, the HC welcomes our new committee member, Jason Johnson. The Club inventory has been completed on schedule, and on June 7, the Club s Budget was submitted to the Governing Board which has been approved. On May 21, a group of Tut Fann Vets were on the patio for a lunch event, and it went well. The Club held a BBQ plate sale on May 28 on the patio which was a great success. The HC sponsored fish fry fund raiser for the Club on May 26 was a great success. Thanks to the volunteers that did the work. The Club Staff did a great job in support of the 2016 Rock & Roll Reunion event. Thanks to Danita Hall and Kenny Williams for helping the bartenders during the Reunion event. The last Member s Breakfast until October, served 93, thanks to the Members and Guests that support this great Lodge tradition. A special thanks to the Members who do all the work to make the breakfast possible. Repairs were made to the walk-in cooler and Club side air conditioning. Please submit any ideas or suggestions in writing or attend a House Committee meeting which is every Monday at. Thank you all. 4 Golf Tournament A Big Thank You goes out to all that participated in the Annual Elks Charity Golf Tournament. It was a huge success! We broke all previous records - Most Corporate Sponsors ever, Most Hole Sponsors ever. I must thank the hard working and highly dedicated Golf Committee. This tournament would not have happened without Danita and Charles Hall, Di and George Wilson, Phyllis Mann, Mike Davis, Carol and Richard Darden, Pat and Ron Shadrick, Phillip Towry, Charles Crute, Kevin Wilbourn, Ann Byrum, Kathy Young, Jamie Cornett, Angie Ezell, Lisa Smith, Jeanette Jones, Kimberly Tippett, April Wiggins, and of course, my wife Brenda Morris. This committee volunteered many hours of hard work, planning, and implementing this project. I also want to thank the Lodge Members that sponsored, sought door prizes, and played in the tournament. Another thank you goes out to the Members and Manager Jay Foster that helped with the Calcutta Dinner and Auctioneer Jay Lockridge on Friday night, Pat Edwards for the tournament luncheon, and Stella and Jimmy Musick for cart signs. Also, thank you, Valerie Craig and Shelly Watts, for pictures and other duties on the day of the tournament. There is no way a project this big could be a success without a multitude of good people working toward a common goal. I have never worked with a better group of people. Thanks again to all that helped in any way.
