2 Even a small act can help in big way a big The other day I was driving with my 18 year old grandson. He was telling me about his trip two weeks ago to Canberra with three of his friends. He told me that when they were in the city on their way to McDonalds they passed two homeless men. When they bought their lunches they bought 2 extra and took them back to the homeless men. Nathan told me that the men looked like they had given them a million dollars. We were then speaking about the poor and needy people. I told Nathan that he and his friends had very good hearts and that we ourselves cannot save the world but if we all do our little bit it will be a better place. That night in bed I was feeling very proud of Nathan. Then I thought of how much the churches do for all the needy and homeless in our society. The Uniting church at Ashfield looks after so many homeless people and is fortunate to have Bill Crews 1915 This is the second last of the series Lead up to Centenary of ANZAC. The following information has been gathered from Charles Bean s war diaries and unit diaries along with other publications on the First World War. After the ANZAC celebration at Wassa on 3rd April and their training had ceased our troops embarked for longawaited action. A few weeks were spent on troop ship carriers where finer point of training took place. 25 April Anzac Cove Gallipoli. Charles Bean reported at 12 midnight, the ships have sailed from Lemnos. When the clock struck midnight on 25 April 1915, the Anzacs sailed towards their rendezvous with history. All men are now lined up on deck and the orders issued, no rifles are to be loaded equipment to be left unbuckled silence to be strictly maintained in the boats bayonets to be fixed the moment of landing the first line of trenches to be taken at the point of cold steel. The time had come, the anxious waiting was over. At precisely 3.10am countless numbers of small craft push off together for the unknown. The water is churned up from rifle fire, machine guns, maxims, shrapnel and common shells seven of the boys in our boat are killed and God knows how many in the others the Gallipoli campaign commences as the first Anzacs land at Anzac Cove on the Gallipoli Peninsula, (1st Australian Division) led by the 3rd Brigade followed by the 2nd and 1st Brigades. The boats scratch the rocky shore 50 yards from land and we wade ashore with the feeling that you are at least one of the first to put foot on Turkish soil. This is the start of a 33 week Gallipoli campaign. At 4.38am for the first time distant echo of rifle firing was heard, the men had landed and the battle commenced. At dawn on 25 April 1915 soldiers of the Australian Imperial Rahna Hollis Seniors Pastor at the helm. Our own Bridget Ocean is now ordained as a Minister of the Word and is in a placement at Ashfield Uniting. What a blessing for this church and how blessed St. Matthew s was to have Bridget for the short time in her training! The Uniting Church looks after so many people in so many situations; I have spoken to ministers who work in the country towns and take groceries to farms that are in droughts and financial difficulties. The Women's Fellowship at St. Matthew s does such a lot and helps so many. I also look at Parramatta Mission and all the good work that they do. I could not list all our volunteers who do such a great amount of work, the names would go on. I will list one of our members Colin Stoner, who I have noticed does so much work for the needy. Sometimes a member will say to me that the church is always asking to Give, give, give. Perhaps at times it may feel like this but when I see all the people whose lives are transformed from the many things that the church makes possible, I feel if we are in a position to be able to help whether it is by financial means or helping as a volunteer, what a difference we can make in our brothers and sisters lives. I often think but for the Grace of God we could be in these very situations. I Look to Proverbs 22: 9 NRSV Those who are generous are blessed, for they share their bread with the poor. The lead up to Centenary of ANZAC Force (AIF) began landing on Gallipoli at North Beach and Australian troops being towed ashore in lighters to land at Anzac Cove. around Anzac Cove (Anzac Koyu) to the south of the nearby headland. They were followed by the New Zealand Infantry Brigade. The aim of the day was to capture the heights of the Sari Bair range and then press inland to cut off the Turkish reinforcements to Cape Helles. From the beach, groups of men rushed up steep, scrub-covered slopes towards the high ground. At first the few Turkish defenders were pushed back. Isolated groups of Australian and New Zealanders fought their way to where they could see the Dardanelles. (The only time they were seen). These heroic fighters reached Troops land at Anzac Beach, Gallipoli on the morning of 25 April strategic positions which would never be reached again. These advance soldiers could almost have run down the hill towards the Dardanelles, but this was not the battle plan. They were so far in front of the line that no supporting reinforcements could join them and had they not turned back they would have been cut off from their base on the beach. Once these brave soldiers retreated no Allied soldiers ever got so far inland again in the nine month campaign. As the day progressed Turkish resistance strengthened. By nightfall none of the objectives had been reached. This area of Gallipoli captured on 25 April became known for the rest of the campaign as Anzac and occupied only a square kilometre of land, the front line less than 900 meters from the sea. Private James Suggett-Hagan, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Battalion was in the 2nd wave who landed at 6.30am and stated after 25 April whole boat loads vanished as a result to artillery fire silent forms lay scatted on the beach everywhere the butchery on both sides was gruesome dug in by noon another massed assault at 5.30pm, worst of the day, and it was repulsed with great loss desultory fire throughout the night THUS ENDED ONE OF THE WORST DAYS I HAVE EVER WITNESSED. From body counts in the first 24 hours, 2,000 of Australians soldiers who landed were killed; at least 1700 wounded and were taken off the beach. The beach was lined with dead and wounded. Nine Victoria Crosses were awarded to Australian serviceman in the Gallipoli campaign. 26th April Anzac troops ordered to dig in rather than retreat. 30th April Australia s AE2 submarine is sunk in the Sea of Marmarra off the Turkish coast after passing the length of the Dardanelles. The crew spent the rest of WW1 as POW s. Next month in the last issue of the series, I ll give you a summary of the actions by Australians for the entire Gallipoli campaign. In God's Hands: The Ecumenical Prayer Cycle At the very heart of the ecumenical movement is the reality of prayer. Jesus prayed that we may all be one, united in God in the mystery of the Trinity. That is the basis and the goal of our search for unity. The Ecumenical Prayer Cycle enables us to journey in prayer through every region of the world and through every week of the year affirming our solidarity with Christians all over the world, brothers and sisters living in diverse situations, experiencing diverse problems and sharing diverse gifts. I invite us as a community of faith to join the World Council of Churches (WCC) in prayer for the world. 7 CHRISTIAN MEDITATION Every year, the Easter celebration reveals a little more clearly the depth of the love of Jesus; his own fullness of life has penetrated our human heart. The risen life that wells up in our heart at prayer and whose tidal flow is felt in every part of our life takes us more confidently into the mystery of Oneness. This is the mystery that is the resurrection. John Main Please send to the church office. by Friday 17 May at the latest. New contributors welcome!
