2 Sunday, Fifth Sunday February 9, 2014 after Epiphany The Uniting Church in Australia The Parish of Rockhampton South -NEWSLETTER- MOVING WITH GOD S SPIRIT OUR PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Seeking to be an active expression of God s love in Christ to all people, both within the Rockhampton South Parish and beyond. As we read into Deuteronomy we are forced to think about the way it presents God as the Lord of the nations and of history. Because of this, the Israelites, to ensure their worship of the Lord is pure, must destroy everyone who does not worship the way the Lord has commanded. Critics of the God of the Scriptures reject such an idea of God and one of the responsibilities Christians have today is to wrestle with issues such as this, as many people listen to the critics and reject God as a reality in their lives. Daily Psalm: Psalm 119:1-8: I will observe your statutes, God. Daily Scripture Readings: Prepare the way of the Lord Monday: Matthew 5:21-37: accepting the need to be truthful in all our relationships and being willing to forgive and to be forgiven. Tuesday: Deuteronomy 30: 15-20: choosing life by loving the Lord our God, obeying him and holding fast to him. Wednesday: 1Corinthians 3:1-9: avoiding quarrels and jealousies in and among churches, knowing that we are all God s servants working together for him. Thursday: Friday: Saturday: Deuteronomy 3:1-11: confronted by the idea of a holy war in which God handed the land of Bashan to the Israelites who utterly destroyed its people. Deuteronomy 3:12-17: recalling the fate of peoples who have been dispossessed of the land they had enjoyed. Deuteronomy 3:18-29: knowing that many things we pray for and work towards will not be achieved in our lifetime. We extend a warm welcome to any visitors or newcomers with us today. GRIEF RECOVERY PROGRAM The next Grief Recovery Program commences on Monday 24 February from 6.00pm pm at the Cancer Council Education Centre, 43 Upper Dawson Road. This free structured program offers emotional, social and practical support to people who have lost a loved one. The facilitators are volunteers from our Church and it would be appreciated if you could spread the word to anyone who might benefit from participating in this program. The program will run for seven weeks. Contact: Aurilea or Kath or rockysth@tpg.com.au. PRESBYTERY MEETING As part of the next Presbytery Meeting to be held at North Mackay and Seaforth UC, a workshop on the Spirited Generosity program will be conducted by Carolyn Kitto. This program is about far more than stewardship of physical resources and is aimed at enhancing the life and witness of a congregation. Presbytery is encouraging as many people as possible to attend the workshop on Saturday, 8 March (and even stay for more of the Presbytery Meeting). Definite times will be available later. Accommodation (if necessary) and travel would be the responsibility of those attending. Please contact Aurilea or Evan as early as possible to register your interest and for possible transport arrangements. 2. It has an area of 30,528km 2, less than half the size of Tasmania, and a population of about 10.5 million people, of whom 75% are Roman Catholic and the remainder follow other religions including Protestantism. Luxembourg is in Western Europe, between France and Germany. It has an area of 2,586km 2 and a population of over half a million people of whom 87% are Roman Catholic and 13% follow other faiths including Protestant, Jewish and Muslim. The Netherlands is also in Western Europe, between Belgium and Germany. It has an area of 41,543 km 2 of which 33,893 km 2 is land, the rest being water. Since its inception in 1980, the Christian celebration of The Feast of the Tabernacles, has been a vital and central part of the International Christian Embassy Jerusalem s (ICEJ) ministry of comforting Israel (Isaiah 40:1). Up to 5,000 Christians from over 100 countries have come up to Jerusalem each year, regardless of the political climate in the Middle East. Pilgrims come to worship the Lord, pray for the peace of Jerusalem, and to bless Israel. The evening will conclude with supper and fellowship. Please bring a small plate of food to share. 4.

6 Ideas for prayer time in response to Matthew 5:13-20 Give thanks for - Jesus use of the metaphors of salt and light, Jesus emphasis on the eternal purpose of the law, Jesus challenge to our commitment to discipleship. Pray for preachers seeking contemporary metaphors for the nature of discipleship, Christians balancing law and grace, study groups learning about discipleship. Give thanks for - the capacity to cleanse community life, the responsibility to shape community thinking, the privilege of learning about the life of the kingdom of heaven. Pray for Christians and churches joining in public debates, schools and communities shaping community attitudes, worship leaders exposing congregations to the excitement of life in the kingdom of heaven. Give thanks for - community awareness of summer storms, community resources for responding to bush fires, community support for drought affected industries. Pray for the Governments of Australia, Federal, State and Local, the Protestant Church in Timor Lorosa e, a partner church of the Uniting Church in Australia, the people and churches in Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, Prayer Creating and re-creating God giver of the resources which sustain communities and source of wisdom in using those resources, give us ears to hear Jesus teaching and courage to apply his words, so that, in all the opportunities life presents, we may regularly decide to do your will to the Glory of your holy name.
