Children free (sausages, salads, slices provided) Profits will support Pastor Benjamin Quilliam BUSH CHAPLAIN, CENTRAL AUSTRALIAN REMOTE AREA During Sunday s service on 29 th July at 10 am, the choir will present a Cantata * Jerusalem Road to Emmaus Road * by Bob McClelland and Brian Giddings. The Cantata includes Hymns, Solos, Duets and Bible readings, and will assist worship during our time together.

2 The Ministry Team is based at the Belmont Church Office.. on most Tuesdays to Fridays from 9.30a.m p.m. Rev. Ikani Vaitohi will be in attendance on most of those days. Pastor Geoff Aitken, on some Wednesdays and most Fridays. They welcome any congregational members who would like to drop in for a cuppa or chat. EVENING FELLOWSHIP Wednesday 25 th JULY, at 1.30pm in the Church Hall when a Barwon Health representative will speak on ADVANCED CARE PLANNING. 3 By Your Example Esther 8:1 10:3; 3 John 5 15; Psalm 118:17 29 By nature, we are creatures of imitation. Children mimic the traits of their parents, and even in later life we are influenced by the habits of our friends. People naturally imitate, even if they don t realize it or intend to. This is one reason why lead by example is such a powerful principle. It s also why leaders can change the direction of a whole community for better or worse (Jas 3:1). Diotrephes, an ambitious member of the early church who misused his power, was unwilling to heed the advice of John and others who reprimanded him. In his letter to Gaius, a church leader known for his faithfulness and love, John gives this advice regarding Diotrephes: Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God (3 John 11). Throughout his letters, John emphasizes that people s actions reflect their heart. Diotrephes actions told a dismal story. Whether he was a church leader or someone who battled for leadership, he was characterized by his selfish ambition: He wanted to be first, and he did not acknowledge those in leadership roles (3 John 9). He was also known for speaking evil words that undermined other leaders (3 John 10), and he spread contention by refusing to receive missionaries and intimidating those who wanted to (3 John 10). These actions didn t reflect the work of the Spirit in his life. We re not sure what happened to Diotrephes. Perhaps he left the Christian community. Perhaps he repented when John call[ed] attention to the deeds he [was] doing (3 John 10). His story, though, shows us that we shouldn t imitate blindly. Instead, we should test the spirits to determine if they are from God and respond wisely (1 John 4:1). Where in your life do you need to be more careful whom you imitate? 4 MINISTRY INDUCTIONS, GEELONG. Ministry couple Revs. Amanda and Will Nicholas, previously in placement in Launceston, have taken up residence in Geelong with their family and their inductions to their new churches are as follows: Sunday 15th June at 2 pm. Rev Will Nicholas at St David's UCA, cnr Aphrasia and Talbot Streets, Newtown. Sunday 22nd June at 2 pm. Rev Amanda Nicholas, at East Geelong UCA cnr Ormond and Boundary Roads. These significant occasions are open to anyone who wishes to attend. Further information from Alwyne. TO ALL DRIVERS who pick up residents from aged care hostels please check that your passengers have signed out. The books are located just inside the main entrances. The failure of residents to do this causes hostel staff great concern, not knowing where they are. WORSHIP ROSTER As the current roster concludes at the end of July, thanks must go to all who have served in past months, especially those who stepped in to fill unexpected vacancies. The next roster will cover the months August to November inclusive. It will be presumed that all participants will be willing to continue unless you advise Neville accordingly. Dates of unavailability or any other information needs to be with Neville or placed in his pigeon-hole by TODAY, SUNDAY 15 th.it is anticipated the new roster will be available in the pigeon-holes by the next Sunday, July 22 nd. 4

5 We Need Your Help. The John Flynn Memorial Church in Alice Springs, opened in 1956, has served us well for over 60 years, but sadly is not desperately in need of restoration. Your help is needed to bring this historic building back to life for the community. We are planning to take a team of 40 volunteers to Alice Springs this September as a skilled work group, just as we did 60 years ago with the first ecumenical work camp. You can be part of the solution today and help us honour Rev. John Flynn. It s e asy to get involved either volunteer or make a special donation towards the restoration. 6 UNITING WINTER SHARE APPEAL The number of homeless and struggling families is set to grow amid poor living circumstances and financial pressures. $25 can fill a shopping bag with groceries for a family in crisis $40 can provide a session with a dedicated support worker $100 can assist a family with Emergency Accommodation for one night Pamphlets and envelopes are available at Church for those who may not have received one with their monthly Crosslight. 6

7 PRAYER POINTS Dear God, we pray for Pastor Benjamin Quilliam, Bush Chaplain, Central Australia Remote Area. Bless him in the important work and ministry which he undertakes as he serves people living in isolated and often difficult places in remote areas of Australia. Loving God, we thank you for the beauty of your creation and this world in which we live. May we never take it for granted. Help us to act responsibly and care for the environment in ways which are acceptable to you. Dear Lord, we pray for surgeons, doctors, nurses and other people who work in our hospitals. Bless them in the many tasks which they undertake, keep them safe and help them to show compassion, comfort, understanding and provide the best possible care to all patients.
