1 From the Pastor s Heart If sacrificing were easy, it would not be a sacrifice. Each of us has had to make sacrifices in our homes. As food and energy prices are rising continually, we have had to tighten our belts and forego some of the things we like to do. One of those things may be the giving of our tithes back to God. I know how difficult that is for each of you and I fully understand. It is now time for us, as a church family, to begin making some of those sacrifices. We are making many changes to do our best to lower our costs as our income goes down. We are not using any air conditioning in our office during the week. Thank you Rochelle and volunteers for working in the warmer climate. In order to further reduce our costs, we are making some additional sacrifices. The office hours will be Wednesday-Friday, 9am-3pm. They may change again in August. Another change will be in our Sunday services. Beginning July 27 th, we will have one service. The adult Bible study will be at 8:30. When SIS meets, it will be at 8:30. Our monthly friendship breakfast will be at 8 or 8:30. Our Sunday worship service will be at 9:30. I know that the 8am people don t want to come later. I know that the 10:30 people don t want to come earlier. Sometimes we all have to make sacrifices. On the other hand, our entire church family will be drawn together as one body to worship the Lord and to fellowship with one another. More importantly, we will be drawn together to encourage one another in our quest to fulfill our calling. As I have said during our services recently, God left us here to spread His Gospel. When we gather together, we can encourage one another more efficiently and unite in one goal. To kick off our single service on July 27 th, we would like to invite everyone to our house immediately following the service for a potluck and church picnic. It will be a wonderful time to fellowship and look forward to what the Lord has in store for us. These are a lot of changes and they won t be easy to do. Your elders and board members have spent time in prayer. Each of us needs to continue to pray for our church and growth as we do our best to reach into the community to spread the Gospel. We are not alone in this struggle. I have talked to pastors from all over California and they are facing the same dilemma. God knows our heart and He loves us. Keep your faith in Him. He will provide. My prayers are for each of you. Have a blessed month. Let him sing praise. Visits to the Homebound a ministry of Sisters in Service Sharron Straw and Roni Turner make visits to the homebound. They usually visit the 2nd Saturday of each month, and normally visit 2 or 3 people. But arrangements for other days could work if Saturdays don't work for the individual. If you know of anyone who would like a visit - someone who s homebound or someone who could just use the encouragement, a visit, or prayer or someone whom you've noticed hasn't attended in a while, please let either one of them know, and they will be glad to pay them a visit. Starting on July 27 and continuing at least though the end of September - One worship service each Sunday 9:30am (most Sundays, in the Chapel) Please unite in celebrating our faith and our joy in the Lord. Some new books for you are How to Pray After You ve Kicked the Dog by Terry Teykl, which sounds really helpful and Vine s Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words (for all of you who are studying your Bible) And several fiction books you might enjoy. To start off - Turn Back Time by Lisa Kay Houser and Philip Dale Smith, which looks interesting Another Church Choir Mystery Puzzle in Patchwork I know several of you enjoy this series. My favorite pick: Two Tickets to the Christmas Ball by Donita K. Paul. Donita is known for her dragon stories and this is not about dragons, but several very special people. I loved this one. For the younger set, there is Moses the Kitten by James Herriot and Swift Arrow by Josephine Cunnington Edwards There are many more; come see. 5 Chapel Walls as told to Betty Hanner [ continued from last month s issue ] The ambiance of the Chapel was sobering, with straight-backed chairs and sparse interior, just as founder Carrie Brydon would have it. But the toll of the bell and the melodic sound of "Amazing Grace" from the little organ stirred the spirit, and the atmosphere became warm and uplifting. Despite the stiffness of the chairs, Sam found his thoughts drifting more than he cared to admit. Observing many in the congregation were daydreaming; Pastor Eli bellowed out, "And God said," getting everyone's attention as he began his sermon on The Sixth Day of Creation. Although the parishioners were very familiar with Genesis, there had been talk about Darwin's Theory of Evolution, and Pastor Eli felt it was important to fortify the congregation's understanding of Creation. While the entire sermon series had been well-received, this one was of particular interest to many. Sam personalized Genesis 1:28: And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth. Sam sensed God was urging him to action. It was time to stop daydreaming and seek a plot of land that would be his home, to till the soil and develop the land, to settle down and, if he found the right lady, get married and start a family. Sam had quite a cache, since for some time he had been setting aside every spare penny and every nugget of gold he had panned. He had fortified the abandoned mine shaft where he found Faith, and surveying the area found two more digs that needed attention to prevent anyone else from getting hurt. He had gained a great deal of respect for the area, for its beauty and its pitfalls. Could this be the land he would call his own, but was it even for sale? He woke early Monday, anxious to follow God's Word. After a quick breakfast, he gathered all his gold together and headed off with Ishi to the Assayer's Office. It was too early for the assayer to be open so he decided to go to Mattie's Place for a good cup of coffee. As he walked in he called out, "Cup of coffee, Mattie." as he took his usual seat by the window. Without delay a fresh, hot mug of coffee was delivered. He took a whiff, grabbed the mug, said, "Thanks, M " and stopped, dumbfounded as he looked up at an unfamiliar face. Her golden, shoulder-length hair was pulled back from her delicate face and her green eyes sparkled in delight knowing she had taken Sam by surprise. "You're not Mattie!" he said somewhat awkwardly. She laughed and said, "No, I'm Iris. I'm new here. Who are you?" "I'm Sam, at your service ma'am." Just then she was called to deliver an order, leaving Sam with his face flushed and his heart pounding. Iris was kept very busy for the next 20 minutes, and Sam just had to get to the assayer. He paid his bill with Mattie, asking briefly about Iris, left a nice tip, and swore to himself he would never again drink his campfire coffee. He'd be back. He was pleased when the assayer told him how much his gold was worth. He was sure he would have enough to buy the land, if it was for sale, but first he had to find out who owned it. With a light and happy heart he was off to talk to neighbors, determined to find out who owned the land he had grown so fond of. He resolved to fulfill Genesis 1:28 ~ he knew he could, for he knew God was at his side. Tune in next month for more of Sam's story - The original sin is to limit God. Don t. Imagine the universe as beautiful and just and perfect. Then be sure of one thing: God has imagined it quite a bit better than you have. 5

6 Reaching the Community I was at the corner market gas station, rushing off to my next daily life adventure when a man stopped me and asked, Your are from Magalia Community Church? I vaguely remembered a few months back he and his wife had received a box from Care and Share. He then went on to thank me for providing food, diapers and prayer for his family. He introduced me to his kids and then wanted to tell me of his new part-time job and how his family was still struggling, but knew God was going to provide. As Pastor preaches on giving away your faith, I realize how much the Care and Share program has put my faith into action. I have stepped out of my comfort zone and been available to listen, love, and pray for people in their time of need. To the office staff and volunteers, Care and Share is a wonderful opportunity to reach out to the vulnerable people in the community - to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ. Not only do people get a box of food, but often a hug, prayer, and encouragement is given. Thank you for your gifts of non-perishable food items that are used in reaching out to our community. Rochelle HUGE CHURCH RUMMAGE SALE September 11, 12 and 13 in the community hall This is church fundraiser, and your help is needed. = Clean out your closets, = Get rid of clutter, = Remember that your junk may be someone else s treasure. Donations will be accepted starting in mid- August. Contact the church office if you want more details. Plant sale and Crafter s boutique sale September 11, 12 and 13 in the Firehouse [ If you ve been collecting plants for the sale, please keep it up. We will start accepting donations for the plant sale the first week in September. ] New Wednesday through Friday 9:00-3:00 8 x 8 picture frames Thanks to generous donations by Irene Reed, the crafters now have a wonderful selection of picture frames to use for a current craft project. They could use some 8 x 8 frames, however. It s not a common size. But if you should have a frame that size that you would like to donate, please drop it by at the church.
