Colossians 3:16 Tom Clark, Dean Richard Hoogterp, Sub-Dean Juanita Joiner, Editor Muskegon-Lakeshore Chapter Website: From the Dean Dear Friends, September 2012 Let me start my official greeting to you as your Dean by thanking you for the privilege to direct such an outstanding group of musicians. Since relocating to Michigan, my wife Solee and I have enjoyed participating in the Muskegon Lakeshore Chapter of the AGO. I have appreciated the very capable, energetic, and enthusiastic people who serve as officers and I thank them in advance for this coming year. However, our chapter is not an officers club; it takes the entire membership to have a successful organization. Please plan on attending a meeting when you are able. Our monthly meeting are always open to the entire membership. We meet on the third Monday of each month. Our opening meeting is September 10th at Sue and Dennis Emmons s House and guaranteed to be a special treat. Not only have they agreed to host the event, but they are providing the meal for the membership (details elsewhere in this newsletter.) Please make plans to attend this wonderful event. The AGO s commitment to education and young performers continues. We will host a Pedals, Pipes and Pizza on October 13, at First Presbyterian Church, Muskegon. Jacqueline Fisher, our education chairperson, has promised us an exciting event. Our Young Artist Series continues with organist Tom Trenney on October 14th at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Haven. 2 Dean s Letter Continued Known for his engaging improvisations on hymns, silent films, scripture, poetry, and artwork, Tom became the first organist to be awarded First Prize and Audience Prize in the American Guild of Organists' National Competition in Organ Improvisation in Former Westminster Cathedral Organ Scholar and current organist at Chicago's Cathedral of the Holy Name, David C. Jonies, will perform on Monday March 11, at 7:00 pm at St. Paul s Episcopal Church. A native of Germany, Jonies received his first musical training as a chorister and organ scholar at Metten Abbey in Bavaria. Many more events are planned for the season. I look forward to bringing them to you each month as we continue the tradition of musical excellence in West Michigan. Turn Right at Bear Lake Road (red & white corner store) Go three streets to California and turn left. After the 2nd house, turn right onto Terra Circle. We're most of the way around the circle - only split level - light yellow/cream with green shutters. Lots of flowers in yard and woods across the street. (For those who like the scenic route - if you miss our house you end up back on California and you can go around the circle again) Parking is limited in our driveway but you can park across the street by the wooded lot and perhaps in neighbor s driveways as well. These free concerts are very well attended and everyone is welcome whether or not you are a member of St. Paul's. Seating is limited so plan to arrive early. Concertgoers are invited to bring a lunch to eat during the concert. Alternatively boxed lunches are available for purchase in the Guild Hall, 30 minutes prior to concert start times for $5. Since this newsletter is about you and for you, I want to encourage each of you to feel free to submit articles or suggest one you d like to have published in Pipe Notes. These could include book reviews, articles of interest/concerns or an area that I really want to start: NEW MUSIC IDEAS. This would include organ and choral music you came across and want to share. Being a retired music teacher I know first-hand how valuable sharing/talking/supporting each other can be and church music is no different than education...we not only learn from others but we should also give/get support and encouragement from members in this organization. Lastly, I encourage you to post your event calendar in the newsletter so our members not only read about what is happening in the area but also attend some of these performances. Since the Muskegon Chronicle is not our biggest advertiser these days we need to pick that duty up for you. I can t post or send out s unless I know what is going on in your church/parish. I also encourage each of you to let me know about any health/celebrations/concerns so these can be added to another section I want to include: Joys Prayers Concerns Again, it will be you that will keep me up to date on things that need to be posted in this section. Yes, I m the Editor, but our newsletter is only as good as YOU want it to be. So with your help, WE can do that together. I do other newsletters for organizations and because of the same reasons listed above, we now have a newsletter that not only has dates and events but we always have food for thought in each issue. Here s hoping for a year of growth...membership-ideas-support-friendship!

5 SUMMER POE HOLLAND, MICHIGAN I personally think that one of the best things the Muskegon-Lakeshore Chapter started years ago was the Irene Kolkema Scholarship Fund. Yes, we have many good things going for us, but when you see the smiles of these faces you ll know why I am mentioning our scholarship. We had four young people closely connected to our chapter attend POE in Holland/Hope College this summer. Through our scholarship program these happy faces received financial help to attend this event or to continue their private organ study. In either case, this is a win-win for these young people and our chapter. It is through your generous contributions to the scholarship fund that we have been able to consistently award at least $800/year. The future of church music is truly in our hands...we need to encourage young students to study organ/church music so eventually there are organists to sit on the bench in the future. Daniel Mot (2012 Scholarship) and Kaela Hartmann (2011 Scholarship), are students of Susan Rogalla Tindal. Daniel performed Sonata in F Major by Franz Joseph Haydn at Pillar Church. Kaela performed Verset in C Minor by Léon Boëllmann at Central Reformed Church. Stephanie Pestana (2011 & 2012 Scholarship) studies privately with Peter Kurdziel. Stephanie performed Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele (Adorn yourself, O dear soul), Op. 122, No. 5 by Johanne Brahms at Dimnent Memorial Chapel. On September 30th Stephanie auditioned for organ at the University of Michigan. We are very proud of this young lady and her goal to continue her organ study in college. Ross Underberg (2010, 2011 & 2012) studies privately with Caron Farmer. Ross performed Toccata in D Minor, BWV 565 by J. S. Bach at Central Reformed Church. We want to wish these wonderful young people great success as they continue their organ study and like many of our scholarship recipients, go onto GREAT success and recognition.

6 MUSIC UNDER THE DOME Solee Lee-Clark, piano Sunday, September 23 at 3pm The Concert is free of charge Dr. Solee Lee-Clark, a native of Seoul, Korea, started playing piano at the age of four. Currently Lee-Clark teaches piano and music theory at Muskegon Community College and is Co- Director of Music at First Congregational Church, Muskegon Michigan. Solee is a graduate of the D.M.A. program at West Virginia University in piano performance. She received her M.M. at University of Southern California and her B.M. at Kangnam University in Korea. Solee s teaching appointments have included West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, WV; Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, WV and West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV. In demand as an accompanist, her appointments have included SUNY Fredonia; SUNY Buffalo and Mercyhurst College, Erie, PA. Solee has received numerous scholarships and awards for her musical ability including the WVU Young Artist Concerto Competition, the French Piano International grant and the Global Education Opportunities Award. Her dissertation was presented at the 2011 conference of College Music Society in Appleton, Wisconsin. Solee has studied piano with Christine Kefferstan, Steven Harlos, Nancy Bricard, and Sung-ja Kim. She also has studied organ and harpsichord with William Haller and Huw Lewis. As a recitalist and accompanist, Solee has presented programs throughout the United States, France, and Korea. Dr. Lee-Clark was a featured soloist with West Virginia University Orchestra, Collegium Musicum, and Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra. Top Reasons For Joining The Church Choir You're running out of clean clothes and the robe saves on laundry. Have a great start to your choir year! Your members are there for all the right reasons! TO SING PRASIE TO GOD! The church is usually crowded and you want to make sure you always have a seat. You've just been selected for jury duty and you want to get use to sitting with a large group of people. The collection plate is never passed to the choir. There's a clock in the back of the church and you want to know when one hour has passed. For years you have wanted to know who sits in the back of the church but were afraid to turn around and look.

7 MISSION STATEMENT The American Guild of Organists is an organization devoted to the advancement of organ and church music in the United States. Next Meeting... September 10, 2012 Since its founding in 1896, the Guild has grown from approximately 100 members clustered around New York to over 24,000 nationwide, with chapters in all 50 states and abroad. Synagogues and churches of all denominations and sizes are represented in the Guild s membership, which ranges from students to world-renowned recitalists and teachers.
