2 Jane Cain, AAGO, Charlotte Chapter Dean Office: (704) A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN Summer is the season for conferences and conventions. What is it that keeps you engaged, interested, and growing in your profession or avocation as an organist? For many people, it s the shot-in-the-arm provided by an annual summer conference, such as the Montreat Conference on Worship and Music, St. Olaf, Westminster Choir College, and many more. Then there are regional and national Guild conventions, with concerts and workshops galore. Personally, I need the inspiration, new ideas, and reminders of old ideas to stay energized for the coming season. I hope that you have a favorite conference to return to, or a new one to try out. If you do not have continuing education funding from your church, then the next best thing will be attending as many of our Summer Recital Series as you can, to hear new music and to listen to someone else s interpretations. Our TAO journal provides lists of new books, articles, and CDs that we can learn from. Let s share some of what we learn this summer. If you attend a conference or convention, write a short summary for the newsletter and tell us all something specific that was a new insight or inspiration for you. Happy Summer! Jane Your Board at work.... The board of the Charlotte AGO Chapter met on Monday night May 7 th. Highlights of the meeting were: Planned the Officer Installation Service scheduled for May 20 Finalized the corrected schedule for our Summer Recital Series Discussed preliminary plans for next year s Peek Recital/Masterclass Weekend Reviewed chapter finances to keep our financial condition sound
3 Featured Charlotte AGO Member: Karen Kearney by Catherine Hicks Karen Kearney relocated to Charlotte with her husband, Andy, in May 2017, following her retirement as Organist and Choirmaster of The Church of the Resurrection, Surfside Beach, SC. A faithful career-long servant of the Episcopal Church, she served as Organist/Choirmaster at Grace Episcopal Church, Lockport, New York; Christ Church, Mobile, Alabama; and Galilee Episcopal Church, Virginia Beach, Virginia. In 2000, Karen and her family moved to the Berkshire Mountains of Western Massachusetts and Karen became a licensed Kindermusik Educator. Then in January 2004, she and her family moved to South Carolina where she served The Church of the Resurrection until her recent retirement. Karen s education and training includes a B.A. in Music Education at Florida State University( 75) and a Master s of Church Music in Organ and Voice at Westminster Choir College( 81). Her teachers include Michael Corzine, Joan Lippincott, and Colin Andrews. Since arriving in Charlotte, she has had performed as an accompanist and as a substitute organist in sacred and secular settings, most recently assisting Ben Outen at Christ Church this year on an interim basis where she and Andy attend and participate in worship when she isn t substituting somewhere else. Karen lives in Rock Hill with her husband, Andy, a skilled craftsman of Fine Furniture, and they have two daughters, Vicka and Oksana. Karen is available for substitute and interim work as an organist, pianist and accompanist as well as for recitals. Please introduce yourself to Karen and welcome her to Charlotte.
4 Featured Charlotte AGO Member: Rob Dicks by Catherine Hicks Rob Dicks moved to Charlotte in the summer of 2016 where he serves as Covenant Presbyterian Church s Associate Director of Music and Organist. In addition to being the primary accompanist for all services, Rob directs hand bells and assists with the direction of Children s Choirs. Previously, he served as assistant director and music teacher at Choir School of Delaware, a choral program for children and youth for the city of Wilmington, DE. In addition, he served as organ fellow at The Cathedral of All Saints in Albany, New York, where he played for cathedral services and accompanied the cathedral choir of men and boys, one of the oldest of its kind in the U.S. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Organ Performance from the University of North Texas ( 13). He lives in Dilworth with his wife, Barbara, who teaches music at the British International School, and their two-year-old daughter, Elodie. Rob recently was elected to serve on our chapter s Board. Please welcome Rob to Charlotte! WELCOME NEW MEMBERS Since our directory was published, we have eight new members and two new dual members. We'd like to welcome these new colleagues. 5 A Synopsis of the May Installation Service The May 20 th installation service offered an opportunity to celebrate Pentecost and find inspiration. Our chapter was hosted by Lee Northcutt and Myers Park Presbyterian, and their choir sang a setting of "Come Down, O Love Divine," by David Ashley White. The combined choirs of St. Stephen and St. Gabriel sang "Every Time I Feel the Spirit," arranged by William Dawson. The AGO board members formed a speech choir accompanied by Orff instrumentalists to interpret the lectionary passage from Acts 2:1-21, and all the choirs sang an Ionian psalm setting. Hymns included "Hail Thee, Festival Day," "Spirit of the Living God," and "O Day of Rest and Gladness." Matthew Manwarren provided organ music for the service and Michael Lehtinen planned and ably organized the entire event. A special highlight of the service was the inspiring sermon by Rev. Joe Clifford, and by popular request, here is a link so that everyone can read it. A Letter from Homer Ferguson, Regional Councillor Dear Members of the Southeast Region of the American Guild of Organists, Our national and regional elections for 2018 have concluded. By a margin of three votes, our region has elected Sue Mitchell-Wallace as our next regional councillor. Sue has decades of experience in the American Guild of Organists, including time spent on the national council. She is well known through her published works, recordings, and as a leader in organ education. She is currently the organist/choirmaster at St. David s Episcopal Church in Roswell, Georgia. I am confident that she will be a terrific leader here in our region and I invite you all to congratulate her and support her as she begins this new role in July. These past two years as your regional councillor will be ones I will always treasure. It has been such a distinct honor to serve all of you in this capacity. While I wish that I had been able to continue in this role, I wanted you all to know how very thankful I am to have had this privilege to serve. Our region is home to a wonderfully diverse mix of musicians and artists and admirers of the organ. We value the art of the organ and the beauty of sacred music. We support each other and love each other in deep and meaningful ways. As our organization enters into a new strategic era, I know that members of our region will continue as champions for the king of instruments. My charge to all of you is to never stop being an advocate for the organ in your individual community. It is all of our call to educate and promote our art form at every opportunity. I remember my first introduction to the pipe organ as a high school piano student. It changed my life. Let us collectively work to change lives, open minds, and touch hearts through the beauty and majesty of the organ. Again, thank you for your confidence these past two years and I wish you all the very best. Soli Deo Gloria! Dr. Homer A. Ferguson III

Led by Matthew Michael Brown, Director of Music and Organist. First United Methodist Church, 217 S. Church St., Salisbury, NC. Free admission. Member Recommendation: Music for Summer Choir Two Contemplative Anthems By Michael Sitton These brief anthems are lovely in their melodic invention and sensitive textsetting. These well-known texts are given a new look that will appeal to choirs of all abilities. God Be in my Head has a simple melody at its core with a quiet flowing organ part that has a repetitive rhythm pattern. Three Things I Pray uses two vocal parts both in dialogue and in duet again with a simple organ part. These two works could also be used as choral prayers or introits. Published by Paraclete Press. Difficulty Level: Easy FOR SALE Baldwin 5 8 studio grand. (Pictured right.) Model R # Mahogany satin finish. Built in Recently appraised thoroughly by Alicia Shumate.
