Toccata BIOGRAPHY Mark Davidson serves as Minister of Music and Principal Organist for Trinity Lutheran Church, Waukesha, WI where his duties include overall worship planning and logistics, producing weekly worship service liturgies, choir accompanying and serving as main organist for worship. In addition to serving at Trinity, Mark also serves the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) at large as visiting organist for WELS parishes in the greater Milwaukee area and throughout the United States, was a member of the Southeastern Wisconsin District Worship Committee and is currently on the Hymns Committee that will help produce our new WELS hymnal in Community music involvement has included serving as organist and accompanist with the Bach Chamber Choir of Milwaukee, and the Lutheran A Cappella Choir of Milwaukee. Professional certifications and memberships include the Service Playing and Colleague Certificates from the American Guild of Organists, and the Association of Lutheran Church Musicians. Mark holds Bachelor s degrees in Church Music and Business Administration from Bethany Lutheran College, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Upper Iowa University. Mark has studied organ with Dr. Aaron Burmeister, Sister Mary Jane Wagner, and Karen Beaumont. Currently living in Waukesha, Mark has served full-time as an Accountant for the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod for the past 12 years. Page 11

6 Christ unser Herr zum Jordan kam (BWV 684) Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) Christian Worship hymn #88, To Jordan Came the Christ, Our Lord, is Martin Luther s great Catechism Hymn on Holy Baptism. It was written to help people learn about the wonderful blessings that God gives through baptism. An extensive chorale prelude will be played on this hymn tune. Musically, this prelude plays what the hymn preaches. In the left hand you will hear the flowing waters of the Jordan River. In the right hand, you will hear a musical motif (musical idea that repeats itself) that symbolizes the sign of the cross made at baptisms. (The musical notes literally cross over one another).
