1 MONTRE Newsletter of the Sarasota-Manatee Chapter of the American Guild of Organists An evening of Mini-Workshops On Monday, November 18, 7:00 p.m. at First Congregational U.C.C, 1031 S. Euclid Ave., in Sarasota, we will present workshops for our AGO members, AGO friends, all choral directors, and anyone who is interested in creative ideas for hymns and carols, useful choral music, both seasonal and general, and tips on how to feel your best and maintain your sanity during the busy holiday season. We will meet at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel at First Congregational UCC where you may choose to attend 2 of 3 mini-workshops. Each session will be repeated and will last for 45 minutes. Our offerings are: CREATIVE USE OF HYMNS AND CAROLS Even if half the choir and your best instrumentalists are signed out for the season, there are ways to enhance the singing of Advent and Christmas hymns and carols. In this mini-workshop, Greg Chestnut and Jim and Carol Hawkinson will demonstrate some techniques, and then help you create your own ideas, using your available resources. This workshop will be held in the Chapel. MUSIC FOR SMALL CHOIRS You lead a small choir, have few singers who read music, and need flexibility depending upon who comes to rehearsal and who comes on Sundays. You search, sometimes in vain, for appropriate good quality music that is easy to teach and attractive to your singers. Search less! Cynthia Roberts-Greene and Nancy Siebecker can help you by presenting a wide variety of choral music and by giving you a list of anthems that we have sung through. This workshop will be held in the choir loft. CARE AND FEEDING OF THE CHURCH MUSICIAN Stress, anxiety, changing weather, shortening days can all pile up on church musicians. Matt Woods and Cheryl Track R.N., will help show simple ways that you can safeguard your good health and lower your stress. Not just another Organist Position Open Pine Shores Presbyterian is currently looking to fill our organist/accompanist position. This is a part time position. One weekly choir rehearsal and one Sunday morning traditional service. For more information please contact Rick Holdsworth, Director of Music, Pine Shores Presbyterian Church, 6135 Beechwood Ave, Sarasota, FL 34231, ext. 224 music@pineshorespres.org The Sarasota-Manatee Chapter of AGO is on Facebook. If you would like to find us there We are listed as Sarasota-Manatee A.G.O. our group address is: Facebook.com/groups/ / Then, LIKE us! We are always happy to add you as a friend. Condolences Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Elizabeth Goldstein in the recent death in Texas of her son Todd. A memorial service was held at First Methodist Church, Sarasota, on October 19.

2 Dean s Letter I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope For hope would be hope for the wrong thing; wait without love For love would be love of the wrong thing; there is yet faith But the faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting. Wait without thought, for you are not ready for thought: So the darkness shall be the light, and the stillness the dancing. Chapter Leadership Neil Page Dean Matthew Woods Sub-Dean Susan Crumpler Treasurer Linda Peterson Secretary The Rev. Dr. John C.N. Hall Chaplain Executive Board 2016 Paul Adams Mary Mozelle Nancy Siebecker 2015 Russell Heath Kennedy Margaret H. Smith Bonnie Wolfgram - T.S. Eliot Yes, Thanksgiving is nearly upon us and that signals that Christmas is fast approaching, not to mention that the stores are now packed with Christmas gifts, lights, trees, greetings cards the list goes on, the pace of life increases and this frenzy is at risk of overshadowing this Holy time, but wait, what about Advent? Advent is a time of preparation, of being ready; I think that is what Eliot means; sometimes we just need to wait--that is, slow down, stop, sit in silence, listen. That's what Advent is about: simple, quiet, open... waiting. "The faith and the love and the hope are all in the waiting." For Church musicians this may seem like an impossible thought, to take time, to wait, to listen: but I urge you to try. Our evening at First Congregational UCC will include a session on coping with stress (full details elsewhere in this Montre) which fits well with the whole thought of taking time and preparing. I hope that you will all move from the Darkness to the Light in the preparation that is Advent, to then fully enjoy the glory that is Christmas. Have you considered how you might musically reflect the Advent season, not just with the careful choice of anthems and motets, that goes without saying, but how about a personal musical discipline? For example, all Preludes and Postludes being by a single composer, or perhaps each a movement of a Bach Trio Sonata, or all moving from minor to major to reflect Darkness to Light. And so, A Happy New (Liturgical) Year to you all! 2014 Carol Hawkinson Jane Hunder Cynthia Roberts-Greene Page 2

3 Do you know a kid?...that s into computers?...that could Your board knows that we ve been more than a year without a website. When Apple took down the webservers that we were riding on, our website became cybertoast. We haven t got a budget line for it yet, but the board is interested in getting some kind of web presence up and going. There are a number of free services that we could use, but we re hoping for a solution to our situation that will look professional and not rely on ads that are beyond our control to pay for it. If you have or know a talented geek, techie, retiree with time and skills, or some kid that is a whiz on the computer. Please let us know in an ! agosaramana@gmail.com Substitute List Deadline for items to be included in the December MONTRE is Wednesday, November 20, Please any events, editorials, jokes, or stories to: agosaramana@gmail.com The MONTRE is more interesting when we have stories to report from our members! Margaret H. Smith will continue as our chapter s placement and substitute chairwoman until her planned retirement in July of Peg will be happy to assist you with finding a position or putting your name on our substitute list. She may be reached at , or by . mhsara1@comcast.net Please remember that inclusion on the list below does not constitute the chapter s endorsement of a musician s skills. Interviews with all prospective musicians are encouraged. All telephone numbers are 941 area code unless otherwise listed. 6 Meet our new Chaplain... We welcome The Rev. Dr. John C.N. Hall, newly appointed rector of St. Boniface Episcopal Church, as the new chaplain for the Sarasota-Manatee Chapter of AGO. He holds degrees from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, Virginia Theological Seminary, and the University of Arizona. Dr. Hall is passionate in parish work, mission work, and for causes of social justice and the promotion of Christian communities that are inclusive and welcoming. He has served as a team leader in recovery work in Biloxi, MS following hurricane Katrina, as well as foreign mission work projects in Mexico and Guatemala. He has served parishes in Kansas, Florida, and Arizona. Dr. Hall is the founder of the Matthew s Crossing Food Bank in Chandler, Arizona. We wish him well in his ministry here in Sarasota and look forward to his spiritual HOLIDAY GIFT IDEA This beautiful book allows you to experience and participate in the last of the daily cycle of fixed-hour prayer: Compline. Kenneth Peterson has sung Compline at St. Mark s Episcopal Cathedral in Seattle since the mid-1960s, and tells the story of the history and themes of the office, woven together with reflections from his own spiritual journey. Links are included to musical selections that illuminate the book s chapters. A comprehensive look at this ever-popular contemplative prayer service at the end of the day. ISBN A Ray of Sunshine... That is a good description of our own Judy Liston, and we are grateful to have her as our new Sunshine Coordinator. From time to time members of our local association need to know we care and that we are wishing them the best through a difficult time in their lives. Perhaps there is something deserving congratulations or a member who needs encouragement. Whatever the reason, Judy is waiting to hear from you and most willing to send a card from the chapter. You may contact Judy by at jrliston@juno.com Or, phone her at her home in Venice Please be sure to give her as much information as you care to share. Page 6

7 Save the date... An affordable option for continuing education this summer. The Gray Center is 35 miles north of Jackson, MS, directly off I-55. The organist s motto: Practice while he/she preaches! What is an organist s favorite ballet? Posaune Lake. Why doesn t heaven have a pipe organ? Because they needed all the keys in hell to make accordions. Page 7
