2 From Our Library Two books to discuss this month: Joinery, Shaping and Milling - Techniques and Strategies for Making Furniture Parts, from the editors of Fine Woodworking magazine. This book contains a series of articles Dic Drees written by various authors for Fine WW and compiled into book form by the editors. It is one in a series titled Essentials of Woodworking. Authors of articles include Gary Rogowsik, Lon Schleining, Frank Klausz III, Kirt Kirkpatrick, Mason Rapaport, Garret Hack, Pat Warner, Sandor Nagyszalanczy, and several others so you know that the articles are filled with good strategies and lots of information. The 6 major topics, or categories, include: Straight, Flat and Square; Making Curved Pieces; Milling Complex Shapes; Basic Joints, Mortises, Tenons, and Dovetails; and Modern Joints. The chapter titles are self-explanatory, Dic Drees however, Modern Joints is a very interesting read. There is also a section called About the Authors, and there is an equivalence chart, LOTS of pictures and sketches, and extra tips abound in this great book. The second book is The Joint Book, by Terrie Noll. According to Terrie, it is The Complete Guide to Wood Joinery and I couldn t agree more. It is divided into 9 chapters which cover Aids to Accuracy, Designing Joints, 5 chapters on various joints, a chapter on using dowels and biscuits, and a chapter on fasteners, hardware and knockdown joints. It is filled with good information, lots and lots of diagrams and sketches, especially important when presenting some of the more interesting joints, tips and variations on creating joints AND it is spiral bound so it stays open on the workbench. I have purchased this book for my own library. That s it from Our Library for May, Dic Drees Activities (Continued from page 1) the map for directions. Trips: Iowa, (June 15, 16, and 17) Our trip will include a stop in Amana, Iowa for lunch and tour of the Amana Furniture and clock Shop. Tour of Wood Magazine, maybe Woodsmith Magazine, the Woodsmith Store, Living history Farms Des Moines and John Deere Pavilion in Moline, IL. 3 April Program Last month s speaker was Rick Ogren. Rick held everyone s attention with his fascinating presentation showing how to build a canoe. Rick not only showed us how to do it but simultaneously held a mini seminar in woodworking problem solving. Rick had to solve many problems during the canoe s construction as he deviated from the plans, sometimes on purpose and sometimes by necessity. Club member Rick Ogren presents his cedar strip Canoe Rick also passed on a valuable piece of advice to those embarking on such a large project. Read the book before you begin! Thank you Rick for a fine presentation! This month s topic will be on CAD, Computer Aided Design, as it applies to woodworking. I will be doing the presentation which will cover what CAD is, its cost, benefits and drawbacks as well as demonstrating how to use it. Secretary (Continued from page 5) cussion of our relationship with St. James. It was agreed that the meeting site is working out well and we confirmed our intent to stay there. Gerry Howard noted that the church is able to make the room available (rent free) by considering our club as one of their ministries. As such the board feels that we need to do more for the church. There are several possibilities that would utilize the skills of the club members: e.g., book stand, lectern, table, etc. The consensus of the board is that we will support the two annual fund raising events as well. Rich and Gerry will attend a Parish Leadership meeting on May 12. The meeting adjourned at 8:09 p.m. Jerry Johnson Guests & New Members We welcomed 4 guests and a new member at our April Meeting. Bob Mitchell from Downers Grove attended our March meeting as a guest and joined our club at the April meeting. Thanks Bill. COFFEE COFFEE Coffee Hosts for the May meeting will be George Baise and Al Didier. We want to thank George McKissick and Bob Sorensen for hosting the April meeting and Donna and Dan Yarbrough for the March meeting. If you like the coffee, tell them so. If not, remember, it s free. Wayne Barton has announced his annual woodworking/ European Tour sightseeing tour of Germany/Italy/Switzerland will be Sept Last year Bill Eck, Milford Lau, Russ Schroeller and Bob Sorensen from the club attended and can give an unbiased opinion.
