1 SHENANDOAH DISTRICT CHURCH OF THE BRETHREN Shenandoah Journal June/July 2017 At 25, Auction Is Vigorous, Strong STILL GOIN STRONG Flora Coffman, our 100-year-old quilter, is delighted as a $100 bill donated in her honor grew to $3,500 with matching gifts. Leading the tribute is auctioneer Larry Wittig. (Marty Barlow photo) Spirited bidding is the hallmark of a really good auction. So, when more than one person is determined to take home a coveted item, the fun begins. At the 25 th anniversary celebration of the Shenandoah District Disaster Ministries Auction on the weekend of May 19 and 20, fun abounded. Wooden trucks and furniture hand-crafted by Ray Wakeman raised more than $7,000. Two wood carvings, a northern flicker and a turkey feather, the work of Ned Conklin, brought a combined $6,000. A special tribute to Flora Coffman, who at 100 years old still makes and donates quilts to the auction each year, started with a $100 bill and closed as matching gifts brought the total to $3,500. The 25 th anniversary wall-hanging, Faith, Hope and Love, created and stitched by Helen Shank, was sold for $300. The livestock auction was lively and successful. Theme baskets and silent auction items overflowed the display tables. Auction-goers loaded up on plants and baked goods, plus some specialty items like onions, rhubarb and black walnuts. And anyone hungry could find plenty to eat! Financial figures will be announced when the books are closed later in the summer, but it was evident that, at 25, the auction is still vigorous and strong, raising money to support Brethren Disaster Ministries Auction In Summary Friday oyster/ham dinner: 1,088 diners served Saturday breakfast: omelets, 297; pancakes, 164 Saturday plate lunch: 186 Over 1,500 doughnuts and 189 ham sandwiches plus pies, apple dumplings, cakes and ice cream Golf Tournament winners: Wes Allred, Doug Painter, Frank Thacker, Larry Wittig 1,000 school kits assembled for Church World Service In This Issue Auction Photos 1-4 Brethren Disaster Ministries insert Brethren Woods News insert DEM Jantzi s Reflections insert In Our Pastoral Family insert In Our Prayers insert VBMHC Vespers Schedule insert
