2 WINTER 2013/2014 VALLEY NEWS AND VIEWS PAGE 2 VALLEY OF CAMBRIDGE Allegiance The bodies of the Scottish Rite sitting in the Valley of Cambridge, State of Ohio, acknowledge and yield allegiance to the Supreme Council, Thirty-Third Degree, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States of America, whose Grand East is in Lexington, MA and whose Chief Officer is Ill. John Wm. McNaughton, 33º, Sovereign Grand Commander. Deputy for Ohio William R Powers, Jr, 33º Deputy s Representative Jeffrey L Miller, 33º Thrice Potent Master Dennis R Barlow, 32º Sovereign Prince W Gene Edgell, 33º Most Wise Master Aaron L French, 32º Commander in Chief Charles L Paine, 33º Executive Committee Chair D Richard Heldman, 33º Treasurer James M Law, 33º Secretary Thomas C Fisher, 33º Valley News and Views is a publication of the Valley of Cambridge, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and is published four times each year. Stated meetings of the Valley are on the second Monday of each month September to June at 7:30 pm. The meeting location is the Scottish Rite office at 935 Wheeling Ave, Cambridge, Ohio. Occasionally the meeting time, date, or location will change. Any change will be announced in the Valley News and Views. Valley of Cambridge 935 Wheeling Avenue PO Box 1825 Cambridge, OH Phone: Fax: Website: cambridge32.com Office Hours: 11 am to 4 pm Monday, Wednesday, and Friday FROM THE SECRETARY S DESK I got the dues notices out a little late but they seem to be coming in about as normal. Thanks for your support. Our objective was to have all dues payments received in 2013 processed by December 31 and thanks to Marie we made it. Each year more dues are paid on line. What started quite small several years ago continues to grow. Also it is possible to update your address, phone, , etc. on line at the Supreme Council web site (scottishritenmj.org). Also about this time of year we receive more than a few requests for dues cards. They no longer come with the dues notice each year. In 2012 all of us were issued a permanent plastic dues card. They are silver/grey in color and do not have a current year on them -just the year you joined. Do not feel bad if you can not find yours because you are not alone. Just give us a call and we will get you a replacement. So far this year I have processed 8 endowed memberships. They are still $ and that is what they will be until I am told to raise them. I do not know how long this price will last but under today s conditions they are a great buy. Each year our members receive a Blue Envelope appeal from Supreme Council. This once a year request helps to fund several Scottish Rite Benevolences: Grand Almoner s Fund, Children s Dyslexia Centers, Abbott Scholarships, and the Scottish Rite Masonic Museum and Library. I know raising money in Southeastern Ohio is not the same as raising it in many of the other areas of this country, but from what I can see the members of the Valley of Cambridge support the Blue Envelope appeal on about a par with other Valleys. Thanks for your support of the Valley, the Blue Envelope Appeal and the Masonic Fraternity in general. On Page 6 there is a notice for an Audition Call for members of an upcoming production of the 26 Friends and Brothers Eternal. The DVD s that are being produced are getting much better. All of you aspiring actors or e x c e l l e n t ritualist take note. This might be your big chance. We showed the 6 The Brazen Serpent at our October meeting along with apple cider and popcorn and the presentation and turnout was great. At the Executive Committee meeting in December Jeff Tucker MSA of Tucker and Tucker CPAs presented his financial review for the Valley of Cambridge. The Valley s finances are in good shape and once again Jeff did an excellent job presenting the information. As he was finishing Dick Heldman 33,Chairman, asked Jeff what were the biggest problems facing the Valley. His answer came fairly quickly and as he saw it the issues are: operating the Valley with a declining membership, expense to operate and maintain the Valley s property, maintaining a decent return on the Valley s investment portfolio, and last but by no means least REMBERING THAT WE ARE A FRATERNAL ORGANIZATION THAT HAS TO BE OPERATED AS A BUSINESS. I could have taken two weeks to put together an answer to this question and it would not have been as insightful as Jeff s which took a matter of seconds. Property is a looming issue and both the Grand Lodge of Ohio and Supreme Council took steps to help themselves with this issue in the past year. Hopefully the Valley will be able to anticipate the solution to this issue so it does not become a large problem somewhere in the future. Sincerely and fraternally Tom Fisher

This was the final event in the Valley of Cambridge to recognize the formation of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction in Past Grand Master James F Eastering Jr 33 and his lady Jill were in attendance and his attendance and remarks provided a fitting finish to the events of the last two years. He and Deputy s Representative for the Valley of Cambridge, Jeffrey L Miller 33 presented the Meritorious Service Award to Jay Allen of Guernsey #66 F&AM. Jay was unable to attend the Ohio Council of Deliberation Meeting in June at Toledo and this reception provided an appropriate opportunity to recognize Jay s hard work and dedication on behalf of the Valley of Cambridge. Members in attendance that joined during 2012 or 2013 and their ladies were recognized. During this two year period the Valley of Cambridge initiated 116 new members. Also recognized were First Line Signers and their ladies that were in attendance. Forty Seven different Valley of Cambridge members were a First Line Signer for a candidate who received their 4 and 32 during 2012 and 2013 and each will receive an appropriate First Line Signer s Jewel. 5 WINTER 2013/2014 VALLEY NEWS AND VIEWS PAGE 5 LEARNING CENTER NEWS Another success! The eleventh October Golf fundraiser was our most successful yet. The golf gods smiled on us and rain moved all around us but never on us. Our activities committee outdid themselves this year getting golfer gifts and prizes. Our parents sold tickets for the 9th annual quilt made by C o n n i e Gaiser and Mary Ellen Ontko and had record p ro ceeds. Lunch was a g a i n cooked by R o n LePage, Buzzy Ferguson, and Dave Black and it has become renowned. All money raised goes back into the Center to support the children. This fund-raiser keeps the Center going and we continue to be indebted to our hard-working supporters. The winning golf team was from Ables Heating Cooling Electric and consisted of (Left to Right) Dan Matheney, Ben Matheney, Jeremy Ables, and Chris Ebersol. Congratulation guys and thanks for your support. School District Partnership Programs Recent Ohio legislations, HB 96 and 157, were mentioned in the fall Valley newsletter issue. Ohio has also implemented a third grade reading guarantee under which children must reach a certain level of proficiency on the state reading test or not be promoted to fourth grade. This has resulted in a need for dyslexia specialists to train school teachers in the Orton-Gillingham (O-G) approach. They, then, provide this quality instruction in their classrooms. In 2012, the Columbus Children s Dyslexia Center and the Westerville City schools piloted a feebased, school partnership, teacher-training program. Ten teachers were successfully trained on the initial Orton-Gillingham level. This year several more Central Ohio school districts have expressed an interest in getting this training. Five school districts have contracted to send 21 teachers to the Columbus center. Also building on their success, this year the Columbus center is piloting a distance practicum with Gahanna public schools. A total of 62 children will be directly touched and provided free O-G tutoring through these community outreach programs. Our hat is off to the Scottish Rite Dyslexia Center Corporation and the Columbus Center for these innovative and intensive pilot programs. They will set the stage for helping even more children in the future. Those of us in Southeastern Ohio need to follow closely in their footsteps. I have sent letters to 24 area Superintendents, Principals, and Special Ed. Coordinators in an attempt to begin a dialog that would lead to a similar endeavor in our area. Fees collected from the school partnerships would cover the increased payroll costs for skilled CDC supervisors and trainer-interns who provide the intensive supervision and coaching support built into the Scottish Rite program. Looking Towards the Future Bill Ziemer, Director of Operations in Corporate Headquarters, has called together a committee of five Center Directors to help define the next phase of Corporate operations. I am representing Southeastern Ohio on this committee and will keep the Valley posted on our progress. Spring Tutoring Our January tutoring sessions begin on January 13 and will conclude on May 22. We invite any interested Scottish Rite members and their families to join us at graduation at the Masonic Lodge in May-date to be determined. Again, we thank you all for your support.
