2 FOOD STORAGE IN RESIDENT ROOMS When bringing your loved one a food treat or snack whether it be from your home or the grocery store, please make sure that it is stored in a plastic sealed container with a cover, or a zip-lock baggie. Plastic wrap is not considered a sealed container. Food left in a resident s room unsealed or not properly stored is a great attraction to unwanted (GUESTS) pests! In collaboration with the Beulah City Library the residents of Knife River Care Center assisted in cutting out paper guitars for their summer reading program, LIBRARIES ROCK! The resident s spent countless hours cutting out these guitars as they gathered in the Fellowship Hall or cut them out individuallyin their rooms. The residents cut out a total of 85 guitars. THANK- YOU! To Mavis Thompson, LaVerna Unruh, Iris Hintz, Betty Jean Mesling, Ruth Sailer and Ethel Gillig for working on this community project.
3 UP ON THE MOUNTAIN TOP At the dew of the morning we stroll up on the mountain top. Click, click, click. There was a village of a whale family of people, having lots of fun. They had goats as pets. They also had chickens, pigs, sheep and cows roamed the streets. The sun was shining bright. Up on the mountain top we saw the sun rising over the top. When it gets cold it gets cold. It was raining. Little children ran and jumped in the puddles. One little boy fell in a puddle and it splashed up to his chin. All the kids got muddy. Their mom yelled at them and they got grounded for three months. But the kids snuck out and went back to play in the water puddles. Their mom found out, took them home and gave them a spanking with a belt, hand and wooden spoon and sent them to bed without supper. The next day he told his father and his father said you earned it! But he said you did it too when you were small! So dad gave him something to do to stay out of trouble. The boy snuck to the kitchen for pizza pie. And he shared it with the rest of the kids. They all started a food fight. Now mom found out! He got another spanking with the wooden spoon and he was made to stand in the corner. He apologized. His dad asked why did you do what you did and the boy said I did it because you were starving me. The family got together and were put out for adoption, became one happy family, and lived happily ever after up on the mountain top. Composed by the Resident s of Knife River Care Center and the students from Hazen s 8 th grade Middle School. Teacher: Mrs. Gusewelle May 17 th, 2018

6 2 THE MONTHLY GAZETTE What is one to say about June, the time of perfect young summer, the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months, and with as yet no sign to remind one that its fresh young beauty will ever fade. ~ Gertrude Jekyll June 2018 Birthstone Pearl The pearl is a unique birthstone. All other birthstones are formed by inorganic substances, such as rocks, but pearls are created by a living thing a mollusk, such as a clam or an oyster. A pearl is actually a mollusk s defense mechanism, protecting it from parasites or other attacks. When an irritant, such as a piece of sand or other organism, gets inside the mollusk s shell, the mollusk secretes an iridescent substance called nacre (also known as mother of pearl ) and coats the irritant to seal it off. Most pearls sold today are cultured, meaning they are cultivated by pearl farmers. Pearls come in all shapes and sizes, and even colors, ranging from whites and blacks to creamy pinks and purples and even gold. The color depends on the kind of mollusk and its habitat. The pearl is a symbol of loyalty, fidelity, friendship, and purity. It is said that wearing a pearl will also enhance one s personal integrity. Special Days Flag Day (U.S.) June 14 Father s Day June 17 Summer Begins in the Northern Hemisphere June 21 6:07 a.m. EDT What s Lucky in June? Lucky Color: Ivory Lucky Day: Friday Lucky Number: 10 Lucky Letter: J Lucky Bird: Robin Flower of the Month Rose The flower for the month of June is the rose. The rose has been called the queen of flowers and is known as a symbol of love. Its name comes from the Latin word rosa, which means red. Since primitive times, the rose has been used in perfumes, medicines, and even foods. Recently, archaeologists discovered the fossilized remains of wild roses over 34 million years old. In the language of flowers, each color has its own meaning. A white rose means purity or innocence, a red rose means love and romance, and a pink rose means happiness. While the sharp objects along a rose stem are commonly called thorns, the technical term is prickles. The prickles help the rose hang onto other vegetation when growing and climbing. 7 21 Monthly Gazette June 2018 Take a Birthday Bough People born in June like to branch out in different ways, depending on what part of the month they were born. June 1 3: Ash You are loyal and reliable, and you take relationships very seriously. Your friends and family trust you implicitly. June 4 13: Hornbeam You are kind and open and you expect the same from others. You think about things from every angle before making a decision. June 14 23: Fig You are very practical and down to earth. A social butterfly, your sense of humor and love for life constantly draw others to you. June 24: Birch You dream big, and although you often set lofty goals, you always manage to accomplish them. Others admire your devotion and commitment to the ones you love. June 25 30: Apple You are charming and pleasant to be around. Adventurous and carefree, you prefer to be on the go as much as possible, and you love discovering new things. June North and South June in the northern hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent of December in the southern hemisphere and vice versa. It s the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in the northern hemisphere and the shortest daylight hours of the year in the southern hemisphere. June Zodiacs Gemini (The Twins) June 1 20 Cancer (The Crab) June June is the sixth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars. Doesn t it seem like everyone gets married in June? It s said that June is named for Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage, so some consider it good luck to be married during this month. Others claim the month gets its name from the Latin iuniores, or younger ones. This makes sense since May, the preceding month, comes from maiores, or elders. June Weather Lore If June is sunny, the harvest will come early. If it rains on June 8, it foretells a wet harvest. Cut your thistles before St. John (June 24), and you will have two instead of one. If it rains on June 27, it will rain for seven weeks. When it is hottest in June, it will be coldest on the same days of the following February. June, damp and warm, does a farmer no harm. Riddle Me June What occurs once in January, June, and November, but never in February, March, April, May, July, August, September, October, and December? Answer: the letter N June Birthdays Marilyn Monroe (actress) June 1, 1926 Allen Ginsberg (poet) June 3, 1926 Angelina Jolie (actress) June 4, 1975 Tom Jones (singer) June 7, 1940 Barbara Bush (first lady) June 8, 1925 Jacques Cousteau (explorer) June 11, 1910 Venus Williams (tennis pro) June 17, 1980 Roger Ebert (film critic) June 18, 1942 Chet Atkins (guitarist) June 20, 1924 Meryl Streep (actress) June 22, 1949 Pearl S.
