20 The Story of Bikkurim The Celebration of the First Fruits The spring harvest began at the end of Passover and continued for seven weeks. When the first fruit was ripe, the farmers did not eat it. They tied a ribbon around its branch to show that this fruit was the first fruit (bikkurim). On Shavuot, farmers put their first fruits in baskets and brought them to the city of Jerusalem. When they came near the city, the people welcomed them with music and song. This was a time of happiness and joy. Sometimes the king himself came to meet the farmers and they walked together to the holy temple to give thanks for a good harvest. At the end of the celebration, the farmers gave all the bikkurim to the poor. Tie ribbons (circles) around each of the words below. Then choose three words from each row and translate them. All the words are from the story. 20
21 Shavuot on the Kibbutz Read the story below and answer the questions on the next page. Every Shavuot my family goes to visit my aunt and uncle on the kibbutz. We live in the city and there isn t a lot of harvesting in our neighborhood. My father always likes to leave the house very early in the morning. It takes about three hours to drive from Tel Aviv to my aunt and uncle s kibbutz and we don t want to miss all of the fun! The Shavuot celebration begins at 11 o clock. All the people from the kibbutz and their guests meet in front of the dining hall. There are tractors with wagons to take us out to the fields. As we come closer to the stage in the middle of the field, we hear Shavuot songs over the loudspeaker. The tractor stops, everyone jumps off and sits down on the ground. The celebration begins! All the children are wearing white clothes and have flowers on their heads. They are carrying baskets filled with fruit on their shoulders. Each child puts the basket in front of the stage. The older children bring the animals: chickens, sheep and cows. Men and women also carry boxes of vegetables and stacks of wheat and barley. Then we all join hands, dance together and sing Shavuot songs. The smell of food is in the air! After the singing and dancing is over, everyone walks to the tables filled with different kinds of cheese, fresh bread and crackers, cheesecake and cheese blintzes for everyone to eat. My aunt calls to me, Amit! Come and taste my cheesecake! Shavuot what a delicious holiday! 21
22 After reading the story, Shavuot on the Kibbutz, answer the questions below. Don t forget to write complete answers. 1. Where is Amit going with his family to celebrate Shavuot? 2. How long does it take his father to drive to the kibbutz? 3. How do all of the people get to the field for the celebration? 4. What are the children wearing and what do they have on their heads? 5. Name 6 things the kibbutz people brought to the celebration. 6. What do they do before they eat? 7. What kind of food was on the table after the Shavuot celebration? 22
