Roses are filled with symbolism and meanings that change depending on the color of the flower: red means love and passion, pink means gratitude and admiration, white means innocence, and yellow means friendship. These color-coded meanings, however, are relatively recent inventions. The symbolic importance of roses dates back to the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Persians. Greeks told the myth of Chloris, goddess of the flowers, who transformed a woodland nymph into the Queen of Flowers, the most beautiful flower in all the world. Chloris husband, the West Wind, blew away the clouds so that Apollo, the god of the sun, could shine his divine light down on her. Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty, gave the flower its form. Dionysus, the god of wine, bestowed an intoxicating aroma. The three Graces gave the flower charm, joy, and splendor. It was Aphrodite who named the flower Rose, rearranging the letters of the name of her son, Eros, the god of love. The rose s unparalleled beauty was used by Iris, the rainbow goddess, and Aurora, the goddess of the dawn, to paint the morning sky. Eros would eventually use a rose to bribe Harpocrates, the goddess of silence, to keep the many secrets of his mother, Aphrodite. In these ways, the rose became a symbol of beauty, love, and silence for Greeks and Romans. Persian legends, too, hold the rose in high esteem. The rose has grown naturally for millennia throughout the Middle East and is associated with the creation of the world and mankind. In early June, the city of Kashan in Iran holds its centuries-old Rose Festival, an annual harvest of desert roses. The roses are distilled into fragrant rose water and pure rose oils. Roses were first carried back to Europe from these harvests. Indeed, much of our modern reverence for the rose stems from these ritual harvests in Persia.

2 Manager's Corner ******************************************************************************** June 2018 The 1 st day of summer is June 21 st. It s been a rainy spring and a bit muggy. In case you haven t used your air conditioners, please put them on to make sure that they are running properly. Remember to keep yourself hydrated during the summer. Having water with your meals is a good way to make sure that you are keeping hydrated. We are having the family and friends barbeque on Wednesday, June 27 th at 1:00pm. Lucy will be working with Bryna in assuring that your residency certifications are in good shape. Lucy brings over 16 years of affordable housing experience to the position of Compliance Specialist. Prior to joining the Jewish Community Housing Corporation this spring, Lucy held the position of Compliance Manager for Stone Harbour Management Company. Lucy attended Berkeley College holding a degree in Business Management. In addition to her long-standing membership in NEAHMA (New England Affordable Housing Management Association), NAHMA (The National Affordable Housing Management Association) and NCHM (National Center for Housing Management), Lucy s many professional accreditations and certifications include LIHTC (Low Income Housing Tax Credit), COS (Certified Occupancy Specialist), C4P Tax Credit Specialist, TCS(Tax Credit Specialist), MOR (Management and Occupancy Review Specialist) and SCS (Site Compliance Specialist)

On May 2 nd, JCHC employees enjoyed an afternoon of appreciation and fun at the Funplex in Whippany.

5 On May 2 nd, Activity Director April Osborne and Lilly, the maître d at Jewish Federation Plaza, were among the employees who enjoyed a JCHC employee appreciation luncheon and a great afternoon at the Funplex in Whippany. Both women were honored at the event: April for her 10 years of service to JCHC and Lilly for her Bright Star acknowledgements from residents. On May 2 nd, JCHC employees enjoyed an afternoon of appreciation and fun at the Funplex in Whippany. The day included an appreciation luncheon and gifts acknowledging their JCHC milestones and Bright Star acknowledgements from our residents. CEO Harold Colton-Max thanked our hardworking staff members for their commitment to our residents and our organization. Of course, it wouldn t be a day at the Funplex without also enjoying laser tag, go kart races and video games.

7 Representatives from Senator Menendez s office came to SOBBFH in May to meet with the Resident s to discuss how they feel about living in HUD senior housing. The residents volunteered for a small group meeting with (from left to right) Artin S. Haghshenas, Advisor from Menendez s office in Newark, Lavinia Walker, Co- President of the Residents Association of SOBBFH, and Rebecca Schatz, Advisor from his Washington D.C. office. The residents that attended starting on the left were: Irving Grossman, Karen Boss, Rhoda Orlowsky, Fran Meyers, Erina Berezovsky, Lavinia Walker, and Barbara Richards. Everyone talked about their lives and how being able to live comfortably in a beautiful apartment in HUD senior housing has brought joy to their Golden Years.
