I ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I ve learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you ll miss them when they re gone from your life. I ve learned that making a living is not the same thing as making a life. Editor s Corner The deadline for monthly submissions will be the 25th of each month. We need pictures as well as information. Harbor Lights will usually be distributed the first week of each month. 5 LPCC Welcomes New Members On August 11, 2015, Barbara Riggins and Denise Alberti were participants in our induction ceremony. Both had read about our club in a recent Clipper article and contacted Marty Smith who invited each to attend a club meeting. After attending a meeting or two with follow-up communication with Marty, both felt our club offered community service activities which met their retirement goals. Barbara Riggins retired from Firestone after 30 years. She has 2 children and 4 grandchildren. After the death of her first husband, she remarried and gained a stepson, a stepdaughter, and 2 more grandchildren. She says, We are one big happy family. She loves working in the garden when it s not 90 degrees, enjoys sewing (lately, mending and hemming.) She enjoys other crafts and can crochet and cross-stitch. She also does some cake decorating, and she will be making a wedding cake for her granddaughter s wedding in September. Denise Alberti is a graduate of Lake Taylor High School, the Fashion Institute of Technology, Virginia Tech and Old Dominion University. She is married to Tony, and they have two sons, Kyle and Owen. She retired with 32 years in education serving as a teacher, dean of students, Asst. Principal and Senior Coordinator of Human Resources for Norfolk Public Schools. She also taught Fashion Design and was the Coordinator for the Teacher Immersion Residency Program at Old Dominion University. Both of these ladies bring to LPCC their talents and willingness to serve the community. Submitted by Marty Smith, past president Page 5

9 Emeritus member, Hilda Teenie Archbell passed away on August 6th at the age of 90. Teenie joined the Pilot Club of Chesapeake in 1966, 2 years after the club had been charted. She was a Pilot member for nearly 50 years. Over the years, she held all the offices, including President. She was a very active member taking part in all the projects and fundraisers. She was also a great financial supporter of the club, helping out often when the club s treasury was looking grim. She was a regular attendee at the Virginia District conventions as well as the PI conventions. Several years ago when she became unable to attend meetings, she received emeritus status. When the evening club merged with the Luncheon club, Teenie became an emeritus member of the LPCC. She was a classy lady, a great Pilot, and will be missed by all those who knew her. ~ Submitted by Jan Those we Love remain with us, for Love itself lives on. 11 Hope Haven BBQ October 3 rd It s BBQ at Hope Haven time again. On Saturday, Oct. 3, members of the LPCC will help with the fund raiser by serving BBQ to the community. The time is 12-1 with a free meal afterwards if you would like one. It is the same day as Fall Council, but with 52 members, we should be able to provide enough help to fill both sides of the serving line. For those of you who helped last year, you will remember that one side got quite hot. They promised to do something to keep the sun off that side of the tent. Members signing up so far are Marilyn Wheeler and husband Donnie, Jan Garner, Linda Daniels, Nancy Wiedemaier, June Vinson, Paula Slagle and husband Norm, Dreama Hudson, Denise Alberti and husband Tony, and Jan Reynierse and husband Jim. If you would like to help but would prefer the 1-2 time slot, let me know. If you have not helped with this project before and have some questions, ask me and I ll try to answer them. It s a fun project, it s a good time to socialize with other Pilots, it doesn t require you to sell or buy anything...unless you go to their bake sale...and you get a good BBQ dinner. 12 A Determined Spirit Once upon a time, a small bird named Tasoo lived in a vast jungle. One hot summer day, a terrible wildfire erupted and the flames devoured many trees and animals living in the jungle. Other birds flew high into the sky and far away to safety, but Tasoo couldn't bear to leave her precious jungle home to burn. Day and night, she flew with all her might back and forth to the river, filling her tiny beak with water to drop on the raging fires. Tasoo's rare heart of courage and unshakable determination moved the heavenly gods to shed tears, and a great rain poured down upon the jungle, extinguishing the flames.
