2 June 2009 THE INFORMER South Dallas Business and Professional Women s Club, Inc. 2 PRESIDENTIAL REFLECTIONS In my first column, I shared with you that I had pondered what I would say, yet finally decided to simply speak from my heart. Like the late charter member Mabel White, I find it difficult to speak about South Dallas BPW without speaking from my heart. As I write this letter, I continue to see and hear each of you. Some of you I see at work or visualize your day as you are out in the community. I hear your voices lilt with laughter and joy. I see others whose faces are creased with the concerns of the day. Some of you are tired, ill, bereaved, or need rest. What strikes me most, however, is that regardless of our current mental or emotional state, we have a commonality of purpose. With our permission, an invisible thread binds each of us together because we believe that together we can make a difference. Our efforts are finely woven threads creating a continuous and a magnificent fabric. That fabric is finer and more precious than the costliest silk or brocade. Yet it cannot be purchased. It is earned through mutual respect and trust. That fabric is sisterhood. Many people feel that there is not much an individual or group can do to improve the world. You continually show that you do not share that belief. Many people are simply overwhelmed by trying to determine how they can help their community. Not you! The South Dallas B&PW sisterhood has provided an outlet for us to share our talents, hopes, and dreams for our communities. During the past two years we have met many challenges. We have experienced the joys of birth, and the sadness of death in our club families. Many of us have been ill or have had loved ones who were ill. Yet the sisterhood always responds.
3 June 2009 THE INFORMER South Dallas Business and Professional Women s Club, Inc. 3 The world is much changed place than when we began in The financial crisis which was once a mere rumor has gripped our nation and the world - leaving many unemployed, hungry, homeless and scared. There are many pressures that threaten to shred the economic and social fabric of our society, Yet, you responded with programming that assisted the community in securing jobs and financial planning. There were also times for rejoicing as our nation moved forward with the possibility of a female or African American President. Your efforts at voter registration were as valiant as those of any solider on a battlefield as you worked to protect the right to vote and helped the nation fulfill a dream that many dared not even dream by electing President Barack Obama. As we venture into the future together, I feel that we have successfully remembered the dreams and hopes of our founders. Health programming targeted major health concerns. Our Educational programs despite a failing economy were able to deliver scholarships. From Trailblazer and Founders Day to Women s History and to Black History, from Adopt a School, and Holmes street to Adopt a Nursing Home, our sisterhood has stepped forward to meet the community s needs. I am also proud to say that our youth club currently led by Ian Morgan, has often led the way in providing community service. I say all this to say Thank You. Thank you for meeting the challenge of not treating each program or event simply as a program to fulfill current needs, but as a fulfillment of a desire stated by our founders long ago Be Strong! We are not here to play, to dream, to drift We have hard work to do and loads to lift! Shun not the struggle; Face it! T is God s gift. I remain as always In your service, Yvonne C. Emanuel, President

Services will be held Saturday, June 6 in Gary Indiana. Our President, Yvonne C. Emanuel, as she continues her convalescence at home. Club Sisters, please call or visit those who are ill, bereaved or simply need our prayers. If you know of others who are ill, bereaved or need our support, please send an to ycecarol@yahoo.com. Message from the 1st Vice President: I want to thank all the Program Chairs once again for your steadfastness in planning and implementing excellent programs. Please remember that at the first of the year when we had our training, each of you were given a large manila envelope for information about your programs. You may remember that that certain information was needed for each program including agenda, pictures, evaluations, news articles, flyers, promotional items, hand-outs, etc. Also, thank-you letters from the organizations that we have served provide excellent documentation for the year-end report. Some of you did very well in getting me this information. However, I still need that information from the remaining Chairs. Will you please get that to me as soon as possible? This is a little different from what you will give the President but I will need the documentation as well. This information is compiled and sent to National at the end of this month and it will take some time in preparing it. Your quick response is appreciated. A Note from the Editor: The next newsletter will be sent in August. If you want your information published, please adhere to the DEADLINE. To submit an article for publication in the Club newsletter, your article must be received on the 22nd of the month prior to the date of publication. All articles must be typed. Early submissions are appreciated. Submit your article to: jreuben@bcd.tamhsc.edu Contributors: Ms. Yvonne Emanuel Ms. Marion Hill Ms. Jackie Harrison Dr. Evelyn Daniels, Co-Editor Dr. Jayne S.
