Among the objectives she listed specifically were Membership, International/Foundation, and Fundraising objectives. (See Page 4) Carol displayed this year s RI flag and theme: Engage Rotary, Change Lives. She emphasized the importance on bringing our work lives into our Rotary connections and announced some programs that will help us do this.
2 Page2 Guests: Thousand Oaks Rotary Meeting July 11, 2013 Past President Vicki Arndt opened the meeting, acknowledged that this was Carol's first meeting, and presented the Best Overall Club Award for our district (which we have won 4 of the 7 years in which the award has existed). Congratulations to all! Vicki noted that Felix Masci made the large wood base and mounted the bell, which is passed from winning club to club. A plaque is placed on it each year. Not to be remiss, She also pointed out that 3 of those years were when we had female presidents. Vicki introduced Doug Tapking for the Inspirational Moment and the salute to the Flag. Guest Carly Paul led us in the Star Spangled Banner. President Carol Freeman introduced her guests: Pete and Grethe Rivera, PP of Conejo Valley Rotary and Oxnard Rotary; her husband, Dave Freeman; Pat Paulucci and Carly Paul, Pat s granddaughter. Carly is a graduate of Moorpark High School and heading to the American Music and Drama Academy in Los Angeles. She continued to introduce the Past Presidents of other Conejo Valley clubs: Gene Archer, Westlake Noon; John Newhouse, Westlake Sunrise; and Ilan Migdol, Thousand Oaks Sunrise. Pete Turpel continued introducing the guests: John Prescott, guest of Maria Prescott; Patty Biery, guest of Bob Biery; and Trevor Tulech, guest of Pete Turpel. He also asked Past Presidents serving on this year s Board to stand and be recognized. Carol presented a Perfect Attendance pin to Tony Kourounis: 27 years in Rotary and 27 years of perfect attendance. She presented blue badges to the following members: Maria Prescott, David Stowell, Haider Alawami, Teresa Elkins and Natalie Bradley. What will YOU do to support These kids? They stood up and were recognized: Jacqui Irwin, Felix Wang, Sue Engler, Jack Reed, Joani Pappas, Matt Morrison, John Bradley, Tanya Caligiuri and Jim Friedl. They helped record ood the inmates voices reading a child s book to their children. He read us a moving thank-you letter from one of the inmates. Keith Parks reminded us about the Midsummer Eve Wine Festival on Saturday, August 17 th, from 4 until 7:30 p.m. This is one of the three main money-raising we do so well. This event is primarily to support Special Olympics, and our club has contributed about $12 million to them so far. Keith showed us a short but sensitive video on Special Olympics impact. Members who have been coaches of Special Olympics athletes include Carol Schreiber and Roger Benson. Keith pointed out the sign-up sheets being passed around indicating how we want to be involved. International and Foundation Exceed Polio Plus goal of $25,000 Exceed Annual Program Fund Goal of $25,000 Attain at least one approved Global Grant Maximize and utilize all available DDF grant funds Successful fundraising Establish documentation of processes for each major event Ensure continued leadership as part of each event As a Rotarian, I will 1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities. 2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary. 3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others. 4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings. 5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society. 6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community. 7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians. 8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship. Did you know? ROTARY CLUB OF TO will celebrate 55 years on October 24th!!
5 Page5 Happy $$$: In true "first meeting hazing" spirit, when President Carol announced Happy Dollars, everyone in the room waved money in the air and shouted Over here, over here! Me, me, me!. Dave Wender carried the cup. Betsy Friedman (and Dave Krehbiel), recently back from their absence while travelling, are celebrating their fifth anniversary next week in Fiji. Dave Krehbiel said they had a fabulous year together 24/7, travelling around the US; they visited 13 Rotary clubs from Washington state to Miami; and they are so glad to be back to the best Rotary club of all. Chris Steele said she was sorry to miss the wonderful demotion party. They were in Florida, and while there they visited The Villages. It is like Disneyland for seniors; she thought it was really cool, but unfortunately it is full of old people. Tanya Caligiuri thanked Richard Williams for setting up the wonderful experience of the Storybook Program, and thanked Pete Turpel for doing the recordings. Martin Anderson is happy about his trip to Lisbon, is happy that he missed the demotion party, and is sad that so many Past Presidents had important roles in today's meeting, because past presidents should just be allowed to go on their way and not be forced to continue to participate in the running of the club. Dan Overton said that as a result of the guff he took at the demotion party (picture of the Old Guys), he bets Dave Wender can t read his shirt [Played with Dinosaurs as a Child]. Norm Nagel is happy to be sitting next to Dan Overton again. He's glad he's back. Pat McCoy contributed for his wife s 61 st birthday. Keith Parks thanked the actors, committee members and all who participated in putting on a wonderful demotion party. Tammie Helmuth (1) just celebrated 19 years of marriage, although husband Mike celebrated it by having a colonoscopy on the day; (2) heads up, golf table: she hit a the ball 137 yards out, which she eagled; (3) they were honored to have Pacific Business Coast Times award them the Spirit of Small Business Award. Roger Benson and Marilyn are celebrating their 53 rd anniversary. David Burns is happy that Felix Wang got married last week. Dave Friedl said that CR Print was honored as Business of the Quarter by the City of Westlake Village. Jere Robings said that Denny Gillette has been in the hospital for a week; keep him in our thoughts and prayers. Nate Harimoto wished Carol a great year as president and to keep the tradition going.
