W o r s h i p a t 1 0 : 4 5 a m. Last Sunday, we were among several Crossroads members to hear the Spring Concert of the Metro East Community Chorale. And seven Crossroads people were up front, helping provide the music! It was a wonderful experience, and it made me reflect on how music touches our souls at the deepest level. I ve heard that Alzheimer s patients, who remember little else, will sometimes sing along with the words to old favorite hymns. Each generation has its own style of music, and each generation brings its own gift to our musical legacy. In modern Christianity, there are many different styles of music. Contemporary churches offer modern, upbeat music with bands. Churches like Crossroads offer a mix of the best from all periods some contemporary, some old favorites, and try to find a balance. We have a wonderful music ministry, and I m proud of our music director, pianist, flutist, choir, and sound board operators. Last August, we decided to revive an older practice of doing something special on fifth Sundays. On August 30, we had a hymn sing, using songs selected as favorites by congregation members. On November 29, the First Sunday of Advent, we sang favorite Advent and Christmas carols. On January 30, we enjoyed evangelical hymns by the great blind songwriter, Fannie Crosby. So, guess what! Wait for it on Sunday, May 22, we re having Psalm Sunday. No, I didn t mean Palm Sunday. That was in March. Psalm Sunday is a celebration of the birthplace of all Christian music, the Book of Psalms. This book of 150 Psalms in the Hebrew Scriptures influenced Jesus and his followers, and later, the churches that were formed in Jesus name. For many centuries, they were the primary source of Christian music. Although we now sing a variety of hymns from a wide range of sources, the Psalms are still the root of Christian music, and we will celebrate that fact. N.T. Wright says, The Psalms offer us a way of joining in a chorus of praise and prayer that has been going on for millennia and across all cultures. He goes on to say that regular reading, singing, and praying of the Psalms has the power to transform our lives. Did you catch that May 22 isn t a fifth Sunday? Carol will be away on the fifth Sunday, so we re having the fifth Sunday on the fourth Sunday this month. We will sing from the Psalms, and we will sing hymns, old and new, based upon the Psalms, and will celebrate our wonderful music heritage. Come and sing along! Pastor Mike

3 M a y Page 3 O u t r e a c h F o c u s A few weeks ago, Pastor Mike s sermon recounted the time that Jesus appeared to his disciples after the resurrection and shared a meal of fish and bread on the seashore with them. He then asked Peter three times if Peter loved him. When Peter finally catches on to what Jesus is saying, Jesus directs him to Feed My Sheep. We have an opportunity to follow in Peter s footsteps as we begin a new campaign to Feed My Sheep for the Caseyville Food Bank with our 3x3 collection (see page 2). Our list of items begins with a prayer by Mother Teresa about feeding the hungry and the directions for our 3x3 collection which will begin in April and finish the end of May. 7 M a y Page P e n t e c o s t O f f e r i n g M a y 8 & 1 5 Celebrating a new congregation s vitality Rebecca and Luke Sumner wanted to do a new thing, to start a ministry where everyone is invited to feast with Jesus. They planted Our Common Table in North Everett, Washington, a ministry where all are welcomed and no one is excluded. According to Rebecca during the first year the couple hosted many events in the neighborhood, met with people, volunteered at various places, served on boards and did what they could to get to know the people in the area, while listening and searching for God s direction as they continued to serve. Luke and Rebecca are entering the second year of ministry and Our Common Table (formerly Everett Christian Church), has established itself as a Christian community focused on welcome and justice. With many partners, including the Northwest Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and Everett United Church of Christ, Our Common Table has launched evening worship in combination with a community meal, an open hospitality space with special attention to welcoming neighbors who are experiencing houselessness or poverty, and other initiatives. Recently, Luke and Rebecca attended Hope Partnership for Missional Transformation s Leadership Academy and are featured in the 2016 Pentecost Offering video. According to Gilberto Collazo, president of Hope Partnership, we are thankful to Rebecca and Luke Sumner for taking the time to share their new church journey in support of the Pentecost Offering. They have demonstrated a strong spirit of collaboration and willingness to share their experience and are a testimony to others who may be inspired by their faithful journey, he says. Each year the Pentecost Offering, a special offering of the Christian Church, raises funds for the new church ministry movement. One half of the offering is designated to the Region or Area in which the offering is taken, while the other half is used by Hope Partnership to support the recruitment, assessment, training and coaching of new church leaders.
