1 Volume 20, Issue 6 June 2018 C H I N O U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H The Tidings WE ARE IN MISSION Hygiene Kits and Food Pouches Hygiene kits and food pouches continue to be made to help the homeless and low income persons in our community, as well as homeless or near homeless students in the Chino Unified School District. The plan is to make enough of each so that there will be a supply on hand as well those being distributed throughout the community. We all are encouraged to bring supplies in the form of small containers of soap, shampoo, conditioner, combs, deodorant, lotion, toothbrush/toothpaste, bottled water and toilet paper for the hygiene kits. Food items such as potted meat, chips, cookies, fruit cups, granola bars and bottled water are needed for the food pouches. These items can be left in the large pantry opposite the women s restroom. All of these things are put to good use immediately. is the sponsoring group along with Adult/Family Ministries. A HUGE thank-you goes out to our church family members who so graciously contributed to our hygiene kit supplies, as well as food for our food pouches. We are able to serve many more of the members of the community that are in need. We couldn t do it without your assistance. YOU are the BEST! 2 HEY ALL YOU BASEBALL FANS - especially the Quakes and 66 ers! Are YOU ready for some baseball? Adult/Family Ministries would like to invite you and your friends and family to a baseball. The game is between the Quakes (Dodgers) and the 66 ers (Angels) on Friday, June 29th. The special event will be Bobble-head Night. If you wish to acquire a Bobble-head, you will need to arrive early as they go very fast! Otherwise, arrive around Cost: $9.00 per person for Club Seats. Sign-ups must be made by June 10th so that confirmed reservations can be made for the game. Please have your payment with cash or checks made out to Paul McConnell by June 17th. The sign-up sheet is on the Adult/Family Bulletin Board for your use. Hope to see ya at the ole ballgame, Adult/Family Ministries Choir Member of the Month Dan Bentley Hard working and dedicated, choir member Dan Bentley is the main force behind the church community Thanksgiving dinner. He organizes volunteers, solicits donations, and oversees the whole operation each fall. In addition, he serves on the worship committee, SAM, SPRC, and heads up Movie Night. As a full-time job, Dan works for a company that manufactures and distributes janitorial and food supplies. He has a busy home life, residing with his mom, sister, a niece, and nephew. We ve also been told that a couple of ghosts occasionally join in the family fun. In his spare time, Dan watches old movies, collects comic books, listens to music from the 1930 s and 40 s, and reads voraciously (thrillers, crime novels, and historic non-fiction). Everyone knows that when something needs doing, Dan is the man! 3 From the Committee If you enjoy good ol rock n roll music, plan on attending our second singalong on the patio on Saturday, June 30, 6-8 p.m. We ll have brownies (free from additives, aside from nuts) and possibly some other treats. Robert Phillips will be there with his electronic keyboard to accompany the singers. All of you professional air guitarists and other air instrumentalists, feel free to play along. Don your tie-dyed t-shirt, long wig, and love beads. We ll have a rockin good time! Father s Day is June 17. Here s a little history: In 1910, two years after the first Mother s Day observance, Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a sermon extolling the virtues of mothers when she thought about her father, who had raised Sonora and her five brothers alone after his wife died in childbirth. Sonora proposed a holiday noting the sacrifices made by fathers, which the Spokane, Washington, YMCA and local ministers agreed was a good idea. She suggested the date of June 5, which was her father s birthday, but the date was moved to June 19, to allow the ministers more time to craft sermons relating to fathers. Newspapers across the country picked up the story and, in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson and his family observed Father s Day. President Calvin Coolidge left the decision of whether to celebrate the day or not to individual states. Senator Margaret Chase Smith tried, in 1957, to make it a nationally recognized day, but it wasn t until 1972, 62 years after it was proposed, that President Richard Nixon permanently established Father s Day. In ancient days, Romans honored fathers every February, but only the dead ones. Now, Father s Day is the fifth-largest cardsending occasion. Why do we call our clergyperson pastor, while other churches use the term father? Matthew 23:9 indicates, And do not call anyone on earth father, for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. In that passage, however, Jesus is denouncing the scribes and Pharisees for rejecting him as the Messiah, and he is chastising them for their hypocrisy in putting themselves above others with titles such as teacher and master. They wanted to be called father so that others would think that they were the source of truth, rather than God. Jesus emphasized that no one should be revered as God is. Roman Catholics call their clergy father, and the Pope is referred to as the holy father. The title of abbot comes from the Aramaic word abba, which means father. The apostle Paul referred to himself as chief of sinners, not taking any holy title for himself. The men who sired us are referred to as our fathers. The 10 Commandments require that we honor our father and mother, which therefore seems to be an approval of the use of the word father to refer to one s male parent. Abraham is referred to as our father in Romans 4:12; however, Abraham is used as a model of justification by faith. By the way, in case you re wondering, a female priest in Protestant churches (Roman Catholics still do not ordain women as priests) is referred to as mother. This caused some confusion, initially, because the term mother in an ecclesiastical setting makes one think of a nun. The word pastor comes from the Latin word for shepherd, which is appropriate, because a clergyperson cares for and guides us, the sheep of his or her congregational flock. Pastor is also a gender neutral noun. Therefore, United Methodists used inclusive language even before it became the popular thing to do! P a g e 3 T HE TI DI NGS
