1 The Messenger Central s Neighborhood Block Party Saturday, October 14, :00 7:00 p.m. FAMILY LIFE CENTER AND PARKING LOT FOOD, FUN, GAMES 5:30 P.M. FAMILY MOVIE October 2017 Church members and friends are invited to attend Central UMC s 8th annual Neighborhood Block Party in the Family Life Center and Franklin Street parking lot. You ll enjoy a picnic style meal, visiting with friends from church and guests from the neighborhood, door prizes, BINGO, inflatables, and a band. BINGO takes place 6:00 7:00 p.m. This is a big event, and the Evangelism Team invites others in the church to assist with the party. Whether you are helping supervise inflatables, preparing or serving food, setting up tables & chairs, helping with BINGO, or mingling with neighborhood guests, being involved with the neighborhood block party is a fun time! 2 PASTOR S CORNER So be careful to live your life wisely, not foolishly. Take advantage of every opportunity because these are evil times. Because of this, don t be ignorant, but understand the Lord s will. Ephesians 5:15-17 (CEB) The writer of the book of Ephesians tells us that we should be mindful of every opportunity we have been given. Wednesday Morning Sermon preparation Friday: Pastor Kevin s day off we are making the most of the time we have. This applies to how we spend time with our families, our jobs, and even with God. And the way our lives are structured, it is difficult not to trifle away time with books, movies, meaningless conversations, and a whole host of other activities. I also have moments when I fail to plan ahead, requiring multiple trips to the store, redoing a job I did not do right the first time, and careless words and actions that require apologies and amends. We are commanded to be wise in how we live, so that we do not trifle away our time. This is also true in our spiritual witness and faithful living. We are told to understand the Lord s will so that we might also be responding to the world around us in ways that uplift God and others. Our words and our actions should constantly be pointing those around us to the joyful, hopeful, and life-giving faith in Jesus Christ. During the month of October, we will have opportunities to show the world around us who we are as followers of Christ. During the week of October 2-7, you have the opportunity to help serve food at the Fall Festival. We will have the opportunity to interact with thousands of people as ambassadors of Central United Methodist Church and Christ. Everything we do and say will be under the banner of our faith, and every time we see someone, it is an opportunity to speak joy and faith into their lives. The following weekend on Saturday, October 14, we are hosting a Neighborhood Block Party in the Franklin Street parking lot from 4-6 p.m. We will be sharing free food and fun activities for people of all ages. Then at 6 p.m. we will host free bingo in the Family Life Center. Mark your calendar to join us for this event, wear your new Central UMC shirts, and help us show the community our faith in action. We will also need a variety of bingo prizes, like toiletries, candles, and other useful and fun items. We want to celebrate and honor those around us, and we want to represent Christ s love for them through gifts of food and fun. We need you to help us make the most of these opportunities to show the world Jesus through word and action. In preparation for these opportunities, please pray for our wider community. Pray for those in our church who will be interacting with those around us. Pray that they might be Christ in those moments. Pray for our church that we might present Christ in authentic and positive ways. Pray also for those we are helping to coordinate these events that they might go well and create joy and hope in the lives of those who participate. Pray that all might make the most of the opportunities that they are being given. 2

3 Please notice, two handicapped signs have been changed in the Franklin St. parking lot. The first spot on the north side and south side are now reserved for the handicapped at ALL times. We need those parking spots for events that go on during the week. You may still use any of the other spots that are RESESRVED PARKING SUNDAY ONLY through the week. ENDOWMENT FUND REPORT September 24 was a happy and important day in the yearly life of Central United Methodist Church. The Endowment Fund presented the interest from this year s fund to 25 committees or organizations from our church, our community, or country and foreign nation. These gifts will be used to help these groups with their work for God and humanity. The total amount given was $82,750. Betty Jo Adams, Endowment Chair WE WELCOME CONNIE HAUSER FINANCIAL ADMINISTRATOR I am from Ripley County, Indiana in southeastern Indiana. I grew up in Napoleon, Indiana and moved to Osgood after I graduated high school (15 minutes apart at best). It is 262 miles from Osgood to Evansville, so this was the BIG move for me. I have 2 daughters, Christa, 26 years old and Kim, 22 years old that also live in Evansville. I previously worked for a Life Insurance company and was a Deputy Treasurer for the Jac-Cen-Del Community School Corporation for 3 years. My spare time is spent reading, scrapbooking, and spending time with my family and my 2 poodles. I have met nothing but good people here at Central and I am excited to be here and be a part of the great teams here at the church and in childcare. FALL FESTIVAL Fall Festival time is here and we need still need your help to make Central's booth the best ever! Proceeds from the Fall Festival fund a variety of Central programs so please consider signing up to work a shift or two this year. He died on September 4. To Flossie Wilson, Brenda & Terry Martin and Family on the death of Flossie s daughter, Faye Hibbs. She passed away on September 7 and a memorial service will be held at a later date. BABY CONGRATULATIONS Charlie and Paula Giesman are the proud grandparents of Archie Russell Wildeman, who was born September 19 weighing 8 lbs. 1oz. He is welcomed by his parents, Josh and Mary and sister, Julianne.
