1 The Messenger November 2014 From the FINANCE COMMITTEE: On Sunday, November 2, all members are invited to a brunch between services to show appreciation for members' dedication to Central and to kick off this fall stewardship campaign. The theme for the stewardship campaign is "Central is on the Move". Details of the campaign will be forthcoming soon. Thanks for your support. 1

2 PASTOR S CORNER Throughout the next couple of months, all of us at Central United Methodist Church will be gearing up for the Fruitful Topping Off for the Highest MPG 2 Corinthians 9:6-11 TBA Congregations Journey consultation 30 An Unexpected Christmas 1 Corinthians 1:20-31 weekend and the future that will help God create in us. To that end, I will be stepping aside from my normal newsletter article, so that we can all be better informed about the experience that is coming our way. Member of the FCJ here at CUMC, Bill Seymour, presents us with some crucial questions that must be answered as we look to the future in this installment of the Pastor s Corner. fcj Do you ever find yourself reacting to someone who seems to always speak in acronyms rather than state an entire name? I suppose I am dating myself to make this statement, and I do recognize that acronyms save much valuable time as long as everyone in the conversation knows what they mean. However, I have had a lot of interaction with people in state agencies recently and have noticed their sentences often contain three or four acronyms. Hopefully, the acronym I have used in the title is familiar to you. FCJ, of course, stands for Fruitful Congregations Journey. I wanted to make sure you know the entire title because each word in it has significance. The J emphasizes that we are embarking on a journey. It isn t the study of several books a number of us and now Pastor Kevin have read, although that is a part of it. It isn t a pre- Consultation Workshop for Central s leadership, but that is another part. It isn t the weekend consultation on February 6, 7, and 8, although that weekend is critical (PLEASE SAVE THE DATE). I could go on and on about the different aspects, but that would quickly get boring. So, what is important about it being a journey? One of the books we have studied, Taking Your Church to the Next Level, talked at length about the life cycle of a church that typically starts with a vision, grows and builds, starts to become an institution, and then begins to decline. Many more details from the book could be included and you can look into those further if you like. You don t need to know all of the details though to know where Central is in this life cycle. All you have to do is listen to stories of the glory days of Central or, for many of you, take a few moments to remember them and, then, look at the sanctuary now. You can t miss where we are. Talking about a life cycle brings to mind our human life cycle which in many ways is similar with growth, adulthood, aging, and, inescapably, death. But does a church s life cycle have to end inescapably in death? This book and what we see around us tells us that it doesn t have to end that way. After all, don t we as a people of God believe in rebirth with all of the implications that term holds. As morbid or as depressing as it feels, take a few moments though before you move from the thought of death to rebirth and think about what it would be like if Central does move on through the human life cycle and dies. What would be the consequences for Evansville and our larger community? What would our neighborhood lose? What would it be like for our family and, even more personally, for ourselves? And, even more importantly, what would God think? 2 NOVEMBER WORSHIP THIS MONTH 2 (Communion) Check Your Mirrors 2 Corinthians 2:17-3:3 9 HOVing for Jesus 2 Corinthians 4:1-7

3 WHAT EVERYONE NEEDS It's been a crazy month for the youth here at Central! We started the month off selling drinks at the fall festival. Then, we had an awesome time painting fingernails and helping with the bounce house at the block party! That's not all either! We have been making some big decisions as a youth group and we are more than excited to put these plans into action! Feel free to join the Central UMC youth group at anytime as we continue our walk with Christ! CENTRAL CHILD CARE We welcome our new Assistant Director, Katie Provines. Katie has a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood from Oakland City University and comes to us from Oak Hill Baptist Child Care where she was a 3 year old teacher. She has hit the ground running and was involved in our recent training day, teaching us about our new Ages and Stages developmental screening tool. November is shaping up to be a busy month! School pictures will be taken November and the fall Scholastic book fair will be November Please feel free to come shop our book fair. It is open during child care hours at the child care office. We will be closed for Thanksgiving on November 27 & 28. TO KNOW ABOUT THE BIBLE Whether it s the media, your neighbors, or even your family members, we often hear, The Bible says, but what does the Bible really say? We often hear people talk about the original Greek or Hebrew, but can we really understand the Bible if we read it in English? And why do we have so many different Bible translations? Starting November 30, you are invited to join Pastor Kevin in a study of our treasured scriptures. This is the perfect study for new Christians and those interested in rediscovering their Bibles. For those who do not currently attend Sunday school, we will meet on Sundays for four weeks starting November 30 at 10 a.m. For those who are in a Sunday school class and would like to participate in the study, we will host the study again for four Mondays starting December 1 at 5:30 p.m. Make sure to bring a Bible or two (any translation is fine). There is no cost to this study, but please call the church office at or Pastor Kevin at kreed@central-church.org so we can have enough space and materials for everyone interested. 3
