I am not asking about the frozen water that may be in your freezer right now or the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Folk. I am referring to an In Case of Emergency contact. Anyone with a cell phone can add a contact number to their list of contacts simply called ICE. In case of an emergency, if you are hurt and unable to call a family member or an emergency contact on your own, EMT or firefighting personnel, a nurse or hospital assistant, can contact someone for you. They simply know to look under your list of phone contacts for the name ICE (in case of emergency). This would be helpful for us at the church as well. We hope that no one is ever going to need us to call an emergency contact for them, but things do happen. If you have a cell phone but are not sure how to add an emergency contact number, just ask Pastor Kim, who will ask one of our youth, and we will get you set up. At the Christmas luncheon we had a sign-up sheet for emergency contact numbers to be kept on file at the church. If you did not get a chance to give us a contact, please call Sandee at the office and give her that information. Auction to Community Shelter Service was $613. Page 2 Social Outreach: 10 Christmas baskets are being given out on December 22. Hat/gloves from Jesse Tree to Trinity Center after school. Barb would like to have an additional $100 for baskets. Christian Education/Sunday School: Youth Christmas program on Dec 16. Erie Lutheran Parish (ELP) Dec meeting cancelled. No Epiphany Service. Next meeting we will next meet on Tuesday, February 5 th 6:00 PM at the Tipsy Bean (Coffee Shoppe, Emporium, Café, Bistro, Braserie whatever it is) just prior to the Pub Theology gathering at 7:00 PM. Help those less fortunate Christmas Food Baskets We are giving 10 food baskets for Christmas. Thanks to a Thrivent Grant we will be getting real hams (not the canned variety). Thanks again to all who donated items for the baskets,, especially Barb Malinski who coordinated both the Thanksgiving & Christmas baskets. Mitten Tree for Trinity Afterschool The Jesse Tree grew 4 scarves, 35 hats, 31 pairs of gloves & 1 pair of socks. All the items are donated to Trinity Afterschool Program which is a ministry of Bethesda. Thanks to everyone for feeding the tree. Women of the ELCA Save the date to attend the June 7-8, 2019 Convention in Ludlow, Olmsted Manor. Recently at St. Mary s East I met a lady who came from Newfoundland. I told her that I once read a book about planes being diverted there on 9/11. She told me that her cousin had been the one who was responsible of taking care of the planes at the Gander airport. I m putting the book, The Day the World Came to Town.9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland. On 9/11 every plane in US airways were ordered to come down immediately. There were over four thousand flights in the air and two hundred international flights coming to the US. Most of the flights were diverted to Canada, including thirty-eight planes to Gander. That meant the 6,595 passengers and crew descended on a town of barely 10,000 people. God knew that he was doing in choosing this place to land these planes. Newfoundlanders have learned to count on one another because they are isolated on an island that is always barraged by harsh weather. Their best know trait is their willingness to help others. The book tells the story of how the small airport handles the many planes, including orchestrating including deplaning all the passengers. Then when it became apparent that all the people were going to be guests of the town and surrounding smaller towns for at least several days, it details how the town organized to take care of them. I think the best part of the story is the human-interest stories of the passengers and crews stranded there. For example one passenger was the Hugo Boss chairman who was traveling from Germany to New York for a fashion show. He had the opportunity to leave Gander on a private plane but chose to stay because he felt a bond with the stranded passengers and the town. There are many stories of the bonding between passengers and Gander citizens. There were problems that we might never think of that had to be solved. For example, there were animals on the planes, including two monkeys! They were not allowed into the town because of Canadian quarantine laws. A group of ladies took care of them in an airport hanger. Passengers found ways to thank their hosts, including one group that established a scholarship fund. Friendships were formed with later visits to one another. One reviewer said, When you read this book, I predict tears in your eyes from the beginning tears of Joy and Pride. Monthly Special - January/February/March The Mary Rose Sanctuary opened its doors in February 2018, as a shelter for women. Their stated mission is "to empower women and keep them safe." They have 12 beds, which are consistently full, especially in the cold weather. The executive director is Dr Grace Kennedy, daughter of local missionaries Rev Charles Kennedy Sr and Mother Mary Beth Kennedy. They are requesting our prayers for this desperately needed mission, and a wish list of needed supplies. These will fill (hopefully) our offering basket on the alter. Needed supplies are toiletries, feminine hygiene products, laundry detergent, bed linens and blankets for single beds. Monetary donations are also needed, to assist them in paying their utilities. Please consider donating through our pew envelopes, and ask any member of social ministry for further information. Thank you. Erie Lutheran Parish January Anniversaries Dave & Kathy Belczyk 01/08/1972 December meeting cancelled. No Epiphany Service.
