2 Freedom is kind of a big deal around here. It is at the cornerstone of our country and we are no doubt reminded of that as we celebrate our country s Independence Day. Our Declaration of Independence says, We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. And our constitution begins, We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. Unfortunately, it is easy sometimes to forget the tremendous value of freedom. We are so accustom to what our country is founded on that it is easy to lose appreciation for this gift we have. Or perhaps even worse we abuse freedom and reduce it to a license to do whatever we want or whatever we feel. That is not what this country s founding fathers had in mind. I hope and pray that we, as a people, especially in these trying times as a country, continue to pursue our unique form of government that provides opportunity, celebrates diversity, and embraces individual freedoms. There is a much bigger freedom that we, as followers of Christ, embrace. We have been freed from the effects of our sin and the burdens of the Law when we receive true freedom in Christ. Paul writes: Galatians 5:13-14 (NRSV) 13 For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. 14 For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." Just as we can lose our appreciation or abuse our political freedom, Paul tells us that we can similarly abuse our spiritual freedom as well. So rather we should become slaves to one another. What a profound concept! Think about that. What if we would do that more? What if we, all of us, would focus on one simple rule, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself"? What current issue is there in your own family, in your workplace or community, or what big problem is our country currently facing that wouldn t be resolved if we simply loved people, loved our neighbor as we love ourselves? May we celebrate the independence we have which was established from our founding fathers. May we also celebrate the dependence we eternally have in our heavenly Father! Joel

3 Announcements Mission offerings - special offerings for Missions from Pleasant Chapel for the month of July, August and September are By the Book Bible Trailer (for children in third and fourth grades) and Bashor Children's Home in Goshen Indiana. When giving for these missions write missions in the memo on your check or on the outside of the church envelope. Make checks payable to Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Church. Huntington County 4-H Fair will be held July 7th through July 26th. Sign up papers for the coffee/ cookie table snacks and also children's church are on the table under the balcony. See the latest Youth for Christ newsletter on the bulletin board Thank you to each one that has furnish snacks for the coffee/cookie table and everyone that teaches the children's church on Sunday morning Vacation Bible School. We had an enrollment of 37 boys and girls. The theme for our Bible school was Rolling River Rampage - Experience the Ride of a Lifetime. We had lessons from the New Testament which included lessons on: Jesus Calls the Disciples, Jesus Accepts Mary and Martha, Jesus Walks with Zacchaeus, Jesus Shares a Special Meal, and Jesus Makes a Promise. Julie Wegmann, Reece Colclesser, and Tammy Thornburg taught the three four and five year old students, Ellen Colclesser and Seth Johnson taught the kindergarten and first grade class, Jill Law and Kendall Wisel taught the second and third grade class, Renee and Madie Hicks taught the fourth and fifth graders, and Anna Magnuson and Vicky Giordano taught the sixth and seventh grade glass. Heather Parsons and Rolla Parsons led the children in music each day. Joyce Hand, Cynthia Chesterman, Cindy Fairchild, Sarah Johnson and Dalen Johnson led the crafts each day. Ryon Magnuson and Aaron Amick took care of the bookwork and served snacks to each class. The mission offerings brought by the boys and girl will be given to the Roanoke Food Pantry and the World Vision Child (Lenny Fernandez) the church supports. Each student received a certificate at the end of classes on Friday after which we had a pizza party lunch. A big thank you to all who donated money and other items. Also thank you to the parents, grandparents and others for transportation each day. Congratulations and Good Luck to Mike Ayers on the start of the new business. 4 Meet Lenny Fernandez. Lenny will be 13 years old this September and is from Bolivia. She is a child this church supports financially and prayerfully through World Vision. Pleasant Chapel collects money which is sent to World Vision and is used to help Lenny enjoy some things children in Bolivia normally would not be able to experience without this. For example, World Vision will be organizing birthday parties in Lenny s community which typically would go unrecognized because of lack of money. From World Vision: World Vision is an international partnership of Christians whose mission is to follow our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in working with the poor and oppressed to promote human transformation, seek justice, and bear witness to the good news of the Kingdom of God. What a privilege it is to be able to share in the plenty that we have in order to make the life of a child who is far away a little better! Perhaps this church could expand this ministry to provide for more children. Interested? Contact Joel. 5 The Pleasant Chapel United Methodist Women met on Wednesday June 13th at 12:00 noon at the church. A delicious lunch was served by the hostess Cynthia Chesterman. President Jill Law presided at the business meeting after our lunch. Minutes were read and approved. Correspondence: A thank you card from Sally Truitt for the prayers, phone calls, visits and cards she has received. Also a thank you card from Carolann Sherbahn for the visits and cards she has received. Thank you, Carolann for the Points for Education coupons that we mailed to McCurdy Missions School. Treasurer's report was given. Cards were signed to send to friends, for birthdays and getting well. New business: A ladies night out is planned on August 3rd at 5 p.m. See the August Pleasant Traveler for more details. Program: Cynthia had food supplies for us to fix Agape bags. Agape means unconditional love. After we filled the bag, she told us to take these bags to give to anyone that we thought was in need of food to eat. A Bible verse, May the God of Hope fill you with all the joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:30) was included in each bag. 6 Several from the Church traveled to Paige s Crossing in Columbia City for a fun time of go-carts, batting cages, putt-putt golf, arcade games, and a golf driving range. Security was almost called for due to the overcompetitive nature of some people in the go-cart races. Thankfully no one need bailed out of jail. Pizza at Pizza Hit capped off a great time of fun and fellowship. Looking forward to the next Family Fun Event. Stay tuned for more information on that. (Perhaps a road trip to a Tin Caps game)

7 Fourth of July Written by Steve Patterson on June 18, Freedom came with a price, the price of Christ blood shed on the Cross. Our Lord and Savior saved us all from our sins. Unrighteous we may be, but the grace of God set us free. Rely on God, He will show our paths. The truth is in God s Word, the Bible, His Holy Book. Helping one another along the way. Obedient to what God wants us to do. Father, Creator, God is He. Jesus died for our sins. United one day, we believers will be in Heaven. Love one another as Christ loved us.
