1 THE WINDOW JULY 2016 ANDERSON HILLS CHRISTIAN CHURCH (DISCIPLES OF CHRIST) Vacation Bible School 2016 VBS 2016 What a great week we had for VBS this year. God blessed us with wonderful weather; the result was an atmosphere of fun and joy for the children and staff. Here at AHCC we have a beautiful setting for a week like this with our big back yard that is ideal for games and recreation. We are grateful to Cindy Thomas for heading up the Landscaping Team, Greg Van Dierendonck for mowing, and all the folks who have worked to get our church grounds looking so lovely. Thanks, too, to all who helped us with donations of craft supplies and Snack supplies. We appreciate the families whose children participated: Jonathan Lee, Madelyn Lee, Grayson Queen, Anna Haney, Elizabeth Haney, Emma Haney, Charlie Cox, Aiden Cox, and Nathan Lutz. Kevin Thomas volunteered as a Leader at the Craft Activity and Ian Baker was in the Morning Skit and worked at the Bible Story Presentation. Bryan Keller, son of our Secretary, Lynda, also served as a counselor. This year VBS had a total of 121 children and 64 volunteers, so a lot of lives were touched by both the children who came and the volunteers who generously gave their time. On the last day many children (and parents) said to us, I wish VBS lasted all summer long! God Sightings VBS will return next summer, June 5-9, Every day each group would talk about where they had seen God - or where they were seeing God and make a list that was posted on the sanctuary wall. A good practice at any age to be aware of God s presence in our lives. THANK YOU to Susan Smith who is the AHCC representative for VBS planning. 2 Page 2 From my heart...in the shadow of his hand he hid me Isaiah 49:2. HIDDEN BY DESIGN...When you are called to serve God in a particular capacity, it s not unusual to go through a period of anonymity where you feel invisible. Isaiah was called of God from the womb. But he experienced a season of being hidden in the shadow while God perfected his ministry. When a vision takes a long time to come to fruition, and you ve sacrificed and worked without recognition or seeing results, it s easy to feel like you re wasting your life. Isaiah was human too. He got discouraged and said, I have labored to no purpose...spent my strength...for nothing. But just because you feel that way doesn t mean it s true. God...rewards those who earnestly seek him, and you re no exception. It took thirty years before Jesus started his public ministry. Moses, David, John the Baptizer, and Paul endured years of obscurity before they were brought to the forefront. In God s Kingdom there are no overnight sensations or flash-in-the-pan successes. One Christian author says: Anyone who wants to be used of God will experience hidden years in the backside of the desert. During that time the Lord is polishing, sharpening and preparing us to fit into his box, so at the right time, like a polished arrow he can launch us into fruitful service. The invisible years are years of serving, studying and doing the behind-the-scenes work. The Bible says, God is not unjust; he will not forget your work (Hebrews 6:10). Be patient; when the time is right he will bring forth the fruit he placed inside you. THE WORD FOR YOU TODAY I share this devotion with you because it seems to me these words are true for a church - a congregation - too. Sometimes a church can feel invisible and that it is taking a long time for the mission/vision to be fulfilled or even completely understood. People have sacrificed alone and together without recognition or results and it becomes easy to get discouraged. Take heart. Do not rely on feelings. God is not finished. What God begins, God is faithful to complete (Philippians 1:6) so...let us not grow weary in doing what is right, for we will reap at harvest time, if we do not give up (Galatians 6:9). See you on the 31st! Remember me in prayer as I remember each of you. Blessings, Rev. Nancy Pastoral Coverage for July Rev. Nancy will be out of town from June 30 - July 19. Pastor Cheryl Coggins will be preaching each of the first 4 Sundays in July. Rev. Nancy will be available for pastoral emergencies July 20 - July 26 and return to the office on July 27 and back in the pulpit on July 31st. In our pastor s absence, you may contact one of the Elders - Gayle Roush & Roland Serenil, Co-Chairs for pastoral needs. Contact Scott Shellabarger, Moderator or Susan Smith, Vice-Moderator for other needs.

3 Page 3 Mission and Outreach June 7, 2016 Dear Friends of the SEM Food Pantry, Thank you for your recent contribution of $200 to the SEM Food Pantry. We are having another busy year at the pantry. Through the month of may we have served 4,779 hungry people. The good news is that we have our shelves well-stocked for food, and our member churches have continued their excellent support. Should you want to receive more information about the SEM Food Pantry, your SEM Representative, Tom Moore receives a bi monthly detailed report of pantry activities. In addition, I am always available to speak with groups or individuals who have an interest in the SEM Food Pantry. I can be reached by mail at 539 Aldor Lane, Cincinnati, oh 45255, by at segdirb1@juno.com. Or by telephone at Thank you for your continued support. Your Brother in Christ, Robert T Bridges. Coordinator, SEM June 14, 2016 Dear Members of AHCC, You may not realize how much you are appreciated! When you decided to make your gift, you may have wondered if your contribution would really make a difference. It surely did to Lisa and Craig. They appreciate your generosity that helped provide food and paid their mortgage following a tragic accident. People come to IPM for a variety of reasons and life circumstances. Your generosity is a gift to all of them. Your gift of $400 was received on a check that was dated April 28, We can fulfill our mission at IPM, only because of the support we receive from people like you. We hope you continue to partner with us in our ministry. Sincerely, Lindsey F. Ein Executive Director Anderson Hills Christian Church I m so grateful for you, and how your help is changing lives! Thank you for your recent gift of $100. For those in need, Roger Howell President With Thanks June 2016 Women s Fellowship Thank you for your $100 donation. We are sincerely grateful and it will be wisely used to purchase food items for our clients. SEM Food Pantry June 19, 2016 Women s Fellowship Dear Friends, Thank you for your recent contribution to the SEM Food Pantry. As we near the midpoint of 2016, I can report that we are busy as ever distributing food to our needy clients. The good news is that our shelves are well-stocked ans sour SEM churches have been faithful in continuing their excellent support for the SEM Food Pantry. Of course, we couldn t do it without you and our other SEM churches. You probably already know that we are an allvolunteer organization, and that no one receives a paycheck in SEM. We are also the recipient of a facility which the Mt. Washington Presbyterian Church provides to us without charge. That means that we can devote almost every dollar received to our hungry clients. That extraordinary combination means that more than 96 cents of every dollar goes to the needy. Should you wish to know more about the pantry, please call me at or contact me by at segdirb1@juno.com. Thank you again for your support. Your Brother in Christ, Robert T Bridges, Coordinator, SEM

4 Page 4 Most of us take for granted that when we open our dresser drawers there'll be clean SOCKS AND UNDERWEAR, assuming that somebody's done the laundry recently. But such a simple blessing isn't available for many of the people who come to City Gospel Mission. Each summer for quite a number of years AHCC has collected socks and undies, mostly for men but also for women, and Barb Henderson has taken them to the Mission. Many thanks to her and the SWELS for their efforts in the past. Now the torch (the empty collection box) has been passed to Disciples Women. Our goal of 500 pieces has usually been met, and we're aiming at that number again this year, especially since the Mission has moved into larger quarters and is able to help more folks. We'll be collecting socks and underwear during JULY and AUGUST. If you'd rather not shop, we'll happily accept money and shop for you. As you may remember, after many years AHCC is no longer furnishing a supper for the Mission once a month, as we don't have the finances or volunteers to provide for the larger groups they're now feeding. So this is our chance to continue helping. Any questions, see Mary Heeney. Thanks for your continued support."
