From the Council of Kadosh, Commander The past month was especially wonderful in that we as Masons had an opportunity to honor the Widows of our departed Brethren as well as our own wonderful and supportive Sweethearts I feel, I am speaking for most of us, very little would be possible without their love and support I continue to communicate the degrees of the Council of Kadosh in this month s article The Council of Kadosh degrees are those degrees inclusive of the Nineteenth Degree, through the Thirtieth Degree These degrees are philosophical and chivalric This month, I will cover the Twentieth Degree, Master of the Symbolic Lodge The Ill Albert Pike, 33º, suggests that, this degree in Masonry, is again symbolic It is based on the responsibility of the Masters of the various Lodges to not only make our selves sufficiently well versed in the subject matter before we presume to be qualified to teach our Brethren The lesson for us is, when we are responsible for passing on to our Brethren the lessons of the fraternity, we must first explore the subject in sufficient depth that we ourselves understand the message that we hope to pass on The Ill Pike tells us that in the distant past the architects of the fraternity had allowed the degree program to expand to an uncontrollable extent and the new age leader had to consolidate the program into an orderly and manageable size It would be most informative for the Brethren to review this section of his book for much more information He also encouraged each Master to charge his Brethren to honor the time tested rules of Morality and Faith He went to some length to explain the relationship of the hierarchy in the fraternity As Masons we must always strive for the attainment of the principals that we express for example, when we recite the Lord s Prayer, Do unto others as you would have them do Page 6
unto you and Forgive others These principles are as old as civilization and a hallmark of almost all religions Similarly, the Ill Henry C Clausen suggested that we must Learn before we can expected to be equipped to teach It is one of the most important duties of the Master to inculcate in his Brethren the lessons of the degrees included in his Lodge The lessons uppermost in the Twentieth degree are Liberty, Fraternity, and Equality Ill Clausen says, We advocate Liberty, Fraternity, and Equality and inculcate honor for the Deity, regard all men as brethren, and labor for ourselves and society This should encourage each of us to develop our own virtues Our journey in selfimprovement hopefully will enjoy patience, gentleness, the beauty of love, the exercise of compassionate judgment, the dispensing of helpful charity as part of the grandeur and power and glory of humanity These are some of the lessons taught by the Twentieth Degree, Master of the Symbolic Lodge The information was gained from and refers to Page in the Ill Clausens, 33º COMMENTARIES and to pages in the Ill Pikes, 33º MORALS AND DOGMA As greater insight and understanding of the intent and objectives of Masonry is needed, I suggest that each brother review these teachings from time to time and refresh our dedication to the principals of our order Bernie Hollenbeck, 33 Commander of Kadosh Notice: Starting March 4th the Office will be closed on Fridays The Office hours will be Monday through Thursday 9:30 am to 4:00 pm Page 7
From the Master of Kadosh, Consistory At our February stated meeting, Brother Richard Paris, 33 reminded us of our constant need of attracting new members Membership in the Lodge is down and it seems like we have not been putting forth our best efforts, as a whole, in trying to bring in new members Now is the time for us to stop and look at ourselves and make a commitment to inform and introduce our fellow man to the values of Freemasonry There are 640 members in the Valley of If every member made an effort just to talk and inform a friend about what we do and stand for, some of these friends might want to find out more?? Let us all make the commitment to talk to and encourage our friends to find out more and hopefully join us in the Life and Love of Free Masonry Dale Hammel, 32 Master of Kadosh Brothers, Knights of Saint Andrew Update The Knights of St Andrew exist as a service organization on behalf of all members of their Consistory They provide services where they are needed to include, but not limited to, aiding the tylers, acting as greeters, providing escort services for dignitaries or for special events created for the ladies during reunions or other functions, serving as guides, assisting the degree work, and help present the Colors when called upon The list continues to grow as new ideas and concepts are developed to meet our current needs and goals I welcome all brothers who are interested in learning more to contact me Let s continue to help our organization prosper Thank you Ricky Oliver, 32 Knight High Counselor, KSA
Tom s Talks Green Alligators can bellow! Michael frantically empties the toy box searching for a large green alligator We cannot start without his green alligator because the alligator helps him during our sessions When tasks are difficult the alligator gives instruction, when attitudes need adjusting he laughs and falls on the ground and sometimes he just bellows encouragement Michael needs the green alligator, he cannot learn without it Much to his relief the alligator is at the bottom of the toy box chewing on the leg of a dinosaur We are ready to start Michael has attention and auditory processing problems His speech is not clear and learning feels slow and impossible at times but, his green alligator forges ahead Together they learn to finish words and that sounds are letters and other magical things Michael learns that alligators sit still and listen so they can devour learning opportunities By the second month, he needs the alligator less and less, at times even forgetting to look for his old friend Michael is learning to ask for help and celebrate success Gradually he gains confidence and competence and in six short months, his therapy is complete friend The green alligator waits in the toy box for his next Stories like this only happen because cares for others Kids CAN succeed because cares Thank you for helping kids Tom Tatum, Clinic Director
AMBASSADORS TO OUR COMMUNITIES During last month s Advisory Conference meeting two brothers announced that Masonic assistance was offered to two public organizations within our community Both rejected our offers! It appeared to be based on an unfavorable perception of our Craft This has prompted me to re-issue part of an article I wrote which appeared in the Bulletin three years ago WHAT SHOULD YOU SAY? The more our Brethren learn about the mysteries of our Craft the better we are prepared to respond to questions, some based on preconceived and inaccurate notions by the public It is an enlightened knowledge of Masonic secrets that can best serve as our spokesman All of us should strive to be that spokesman We should not only represent Freemasonry by our actions but also by our knowledge of its teachings Many appear to be uncomfortable answering questions about Masonry, so they avoid effectively addressing public misconceptions about our Craft In my view, they do not have a firm understanding of the deeper teachings within our Mysteries So their response to inquiries is, in so many words: before you can receive answers to certain questions you have to join our fraternity and become a Master Mason And then they go on by saying we are a service organization helping those in need; and gather together in harmony within our respective Masonic Centers for the purpose of enjoying fellowship and conducting rituals To me, these responses seem vague and do not adequately address what the deeper purpose Masonry serves, or should serve Efforts in reading, studying and then reflecting upon the mysteries of Freemasonry through Master Craftsman I, II and III Correspondence Courses were immensely helpful towards enabling me to answer with clarity questions pertaining to Masonry With the exception of pass words, hand shakes and signs given within the confines of a tiled lodge room, my response to those who inquire, and even those who want to criticize Masonry, is that I invite them to ask questions, and I promise to answer them precisely in terms they can understand If we want the general public to have an accurate understanding of what the Masonic Brotherhood is about, or should be about, we need to explain in words everyone can understand Perhaps sometime during this year, if there are enough Brothers interested, we will devote one of the Study/Discussion Group Sessions addressing this subject John L Tracy, 32
