SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 3 From the Venerable Master Our fall class is the first three Saturday s in November. Make sure you bring your candidates. We will be voting on Last Minute Petitions on November 5th. Even if you don t have a Candidate, please join us on those Saturdays! I apologize for not being able to attend the Feast of Tishri and stated meeting on October 17th. I attended the Funeral Service for Lori s (my wife) Dad. It was a very emotional day for us. His death was sudden. He was five days short of his 86th birthday. In an attempt to keep my mind sharp, I have subscribed to Merriam-Webster Word of the Day; the following were words of notoriety that I have received. Keep in mind that we use the archaic version of the word: Sublimate (verb) 1. To cause to pass directly from the solid to the vapor state. 2. To direct the expression (a desire or impulse) from a primitive to a more socially and culturally acceptable form. To sublimate is to change the form, but not the essence. Physically speaking, it means to transform solid to vapor; psychologically, it means changing the outlet, or means, of expression from something base and inappropriate to something more positive or acceptable. The word sublimate comes from the Latin verb sublimare, which means to lift up or raise and which is also the ancestor of our sublime. Sublimate itself once meant to elevate to a place of dignity or honor or to give a more elevated character to, but these meanings are now obsolete. Palliate (verb) 1. To reduce the violence of (a disease); also: to ease (symptoms) without curing the underlying disease. 2. To cover by excuses and apologies. 3. To moderate the intensity of. Long ago, the ancient Romans had a name for the cloak-like garb that was worn by the Greeks (distinguishing it from their own toga ); the name was pallium. In the 15th century, English speakers modified the Late Latin word palliatus, which derives from pallium, to form palliate. Our term, used initially as both an adjective and a verb, never had the literal Latin sense referring to the cloak you wear, but it took on the figurative cloak of protection. Specifically, the verb palliate meant (as it still can mean) to lessen the intensity of a disease. Nowadays, palliate can be used as a synonym of gloss or whitewash when someone is attempting to disguise something bad. Mark Hodges, Venerable Mast Fresno Lodge of Perfection

SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 4 From the Wise Master As my term as Wise Master comes to a close, I reflect with gratitude and satisfaction. I leave this position with a greater understanding of the tenets of Scottish Rite Masonry and an appreciation of the Masonic youth that I would never had experienced if not for Jim Sperlich 33 inviting me into the line. Thank you, Jim. I will never forget the friendship and mentoring provided by C Ray Whitaker 33 as he continued my education in the Chapter. Secondly, I would like to thank all of the officers in the Chapter line. Each time you were called upon, you preformed your duties without fail. I look forward to participating in your advancement through the line. And last, but certainly not least, all the brethren for electing me to the position of Wise Master. I am proud to call you my brother. No better men have ever walked the earth. As I close, I have a message for all Scottish Rite Masons, especially the new. Each lodge has many opportunities for your advancement in Masonry. Each position as you advance though the chairs leaves you with a feeling of accomplishment. Each lodge is unique in its duties. If you are asked to fill a position in one of the lodges, please consider, the reward is much greater then the commitment. My Senior Warden, and good friend, Dale Hammel will be Acting Wise Master at the November stated meeting. I will be in Ohio sharing the Thanksgiving holiday with my ninety year old mother and family. I thank God each night for my mother s continued good health. I hate to miss Alan s wonderful dinner, but I gotta go. See you all at the December stated meeting. Happy Thanksgiving, Dave Pitts, 32 KCCH The 29th Degree Portrayal To all cast, stage and assistances for the 29, there will be a practice on November 14th at 7:30 pm or immediately following the SGIG Advisory Conference taking place in the lounge. This will be the last opportunity for a complete practice session prior to the portrayal scheduled for the morning of November 19th at approximately 9:00am There will then be a short costumed run-through the morning of the degree beginning at 8:30am If unable to attend any of the above dates please call or amiller504@gmail.com Thank You, Andrew Miller 32, Degree Director

SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 5 From the Master of Kadosh This month we have the enjoyment of putting on our fall class, always a favorite time of year myself. While we already have quite a few petitions in, if know some brother out there who s been putting things off, well now s the time. This fall promises to be interesting as we have been working to portray the 29 for the first time in quite a long while. So not just for our candidates but to our current members especially; I d like to invite you all to come and see something a bit different this year. In addition I would like to thank all those who worked to make Scottish Rite s inclusion in the NAS Lemoore Air Show a success, and a fun time all around as always. Andrew Miller 32 November Menu: TURKEY: My Cooking Secret: Thanksgiving: This is the time of year that the family gathers for a feast and the usual feast consists of Turkey with all the trimmings. I usually get a frozen turkey and defrosting it is a pain so I allow approximately 5 hours of defrosting for every pound. After defrosting I take fresh lemons and lather the inside of the cavity, then take a small handful of salt and rub all over the inside of the turkey. For flavor I put inside the turkey a half a yellow onion. I always close up the turkey cavity and make sure that the turkey s legs are tied together, held close to the body, and tie a string around the turkey body to hold the wings in close. Stuffing is a choice of the cook and I do not stuff my turkey. I always preheat the oven to 400 degrees F and place turkey BREAST DOWN on the bottom of a rack over a sturdy roasting pan big enough to catch all the drippings. This is the main difference between the way I make turkey and everyone else. Cooking the turkey breast down means the skin over the breast will not get so brown. However, all of the juices from the cooking turkey will fall down into the breast while cooking. And the resulting bird will have the most succulent turkey breast imaginable. I usually add several sprigs of fresh (if possible) thyme and rosemary to the outside of the turkey. Cooking time of about 15 minutes for every pound and the best method is to start the cooking at 400 F for the first 1/2 hour. Then reduce the heat to 350 F for the next 2 hours. Then reduce the heat further to 225 F for the next hour to hour and a half. The trimmings: I like sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, a wonderful salad and of course pumpkin pie. Allan Miller, 33, Banquet Chairman

We will never lose courage and, as long as we have complete faith in Him, obstacles can be overcome. We must also always remember that anger against a Brother can only harm us, whereas the practice of true brotherly love will enrich us. It is our duty as Masons to assist our fellow men and to support those souls whose burdens have been too great. As we gain a full understanding of our degrees, we can attain the steps to climb the heavenly ladder. During lean times, we must never capitulate by thinking membership losses are inevitable. They are not! With the diverse talents of our members we can and must embark on growth. We must practice unstinting devotion and methodical discipline, commitment and dedication to building membership and be in the forefront of bringing fine, worthy and well-qualified men into our great Order. A large majority of the signers of that matchless declaration, that all men

SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 7 are created free and equal, and shall be protected in the exercise of liberty of conscience in their devotions to Almighty God; and every one of the commissioned officers in command of the armies that enforced the recognition of that sacred doctrine, was a member of our noble fraternity. We should all be proud that our society has an enviable record for its observance of the Biblical expression of Abraham, Let there be no strife between me and thee. Brethren, let us spend our energy building our great and ancient Order. Regards, Durward C. Ayre 32 KCCH Regional Orient Membership Ambassador for the Valleys of San Jose and Fresno in California WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT? I am fortunate to be living at a time when The Supreme Council, 33 Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction of the United States of America has made an admirable and somewhat successful attempt in curbing the tendency of Masonry to deteriorate into just another social and charitable organization. By signing up and having the determination and fortitude to carefully read and complete both Master Craftsman I and II courses have led me out of a dull mist and into the sublime light of what our craft is, or should be about. What makes Masonry uniquely different from any other social club or service organization is its symbols and their profound moral, intellectual and spiritual teachings. It is not its boasting of memorization when it serves only to advance a Brother further along in degrees and chairs while at the same time failing to convey their symbolic meanings. Although commendable, it is not its charitable efforts; other organizations within our community can offer the same. It is not its fancy and colorful kilts, hats, jewels and regalia when they are worn only for pomp and pageantry. Nor is it in its rituals; when rituals are performed by those Brothers possessing no true understanding of their symbolic and spiritual meanings. All of the above including fellowship are important components of our fraternity and should be enthusiastically supported. But in the context of what makes our Craft different they fall woefully short! Masonic enlightenment is found in studying its ancient symbols, and by doing so, we discover their hidden and profound Truths. That is what uniquely differentiates this Craft from all other orders and associations. Traveling the bridge to Light is not easy. It requires a commitment towards self knowledge. Self knowledge is the dedication of one s time and effort towards reading, studying, reflecting and pondering upon those great Moral Truths hidden in our symbolism and allegorical stories. The accumulation of this Knowledge is gradual. It builds upon itself with unceasing labor. In that regard, I am forever a candidate and will always strive to be a worthy Master of the Royal Secret and an adept among men. Master Craftsman I and II have served admirably as facilitators in my endeavor to discover the true meanings of our Craft s mysteries. And by doing so, I become one of those Masons Albert Pike calls Children of Light. Brother John L. Tracy 32

SCOTTISH RITE BULLETIN 10 History of the Scottish Rite Jack V. Farson, 33 The First Supreme Council: Charleston, 1801 However the 25-degree Order of the Royal Secret came into being, it proved popular. These French high degrees, unlike the English York Rite, were spread by traveling Inspectors who conferred them for a fee. It wasn t necessary to wait for enough Masons in a town to receive the high degrees somewhere else and for them to apply for a charter; the itinerant Inspector could take care of everything as soon as he arrived. Eight bodies of the Royal Secret were formed in America before 1800, from New Orleans to Albany. The weakness of the Order proved to be the unchecked system of Inspectors General. Each Inspector General could confer the degrees on Master Masons, establish local bodies, and create new Inspectors all for an appropriate fee. There were no guidelines on cost, no limitation on numbers, and no restriction on how many more Inspectors an Inspector could create. By 1800 there were over 80 Inspectors General, and the system was moving toward chaos. Then on May 31, 1801, the first Supreme Council of the Thirty-third Degree, the Mother Council of the World, declared its existence with a motto of Ordo ab Chao (Order from Chaos). It announced a new 33-degree system of high degrees that incorporated all 25 of the Order of the Royal Secret, and added eight more, including that of 33, Sovereign Grand Inspector General. This new organization declared control of high-degree Masonry in America. The new Supreme Council had a written constitution and a plan for organizing and managing the bodies under its control. The problem it faced was how to rein in the roving Inspectors General. The solution was shrewd and depended upon convincing the Inspectors to voluntarily yield allegiance to the Supreme Council. Any Inspector of the 25 would be given authority to confer up to the 32 (the extra seven degrees would make his product more attractive), if he turned in his old patent and agreed to follow the rules of the Supreme Council. This strategy was reasonably successful, and independent Inspectors General soon disappeared. DUES PAYMENTS: Dues notices are a little late but the Supreme Council has assured us that they are in the mail. Please keep in mind that you may now pay your dues and make charitable gifts with Visa, Discover, Master Card and American Express Bank Cards through Supreme Council. You may access this service at under the heading Member Programs or by clicking the Pay Your Dues Online link on the home page. Also, if you do not have a computer you may simply call Scottish Rite at and we can complete the process for you through our office. Louis Jelinek, 33
